Authors, artists, historians & pirates lunch at Kelly's Caribbean Bar
Thursday, Nov. 29, was the artistic day. After an author's lunch at Kelly's Caribbean Bar, there was first a slide presentation given by Don Maitz on his pirate paintings, then followed up by a Grand Reception for his Pirate Art Show in the Custom House.

The Corsairs entertain at the reception for Don Maitz's pirate art.
The Corsairs sang, the rum flowed freely, both in liquid form, and as delicious rum cake (from the Tortuga Rum Cake Co.) – and live pirates filled the room while the pirates in the paintings looked on. Models for several of the paintings were present – many wearing the same get-up as in the painting – making a great opportunity for photos of the models with painting!!

Flounder, Captain Luigi, Roach Loaf and Red Dog, of the West Coast Mutineers posed for this painting by Don Maitz, used in the May 1999 National Geographic Magazine on the article about the Whydah.

Spyder and Michael MacLeod did NOT pose for this painting of Blackbeard by Don Maitz, but they sure look as if they had posed.
There was even an illustration of yer
NQG editors in the show (used as a past cover of No Quarter Given)!!
Hanging high above all, was a ghostly skeletal ship’s figurehead – which I learned was the actual figurehead from Capt. Hook’s ship in the movie "Hook".
Don
Maitz and the lad Gromit challenged each other to a "Draw Off".
They spent much of the art reception drawing pictures of each other. Here
you can see Don drawing Gromit using his Jolly Roger pencil (the one with the
skull and crossbones all over it).
Later in the evening, Don kept sketching many other pirates, and many of these drawings appear in the January 2002 No Quarter Given.
A wedding party on the 2nd floor invited the pirates to come up. (They didn’t know what they was getting into!) Pirates stormed the party, kidnapped the bride, and the pirate lasses absconded with the groom. All were returned, when the pirates headed down Green Street to celebrate another artist’s show – that of Michael Noles (who had drawn the official Pirates in Paradise poster) at the Woodenhead Gallery. The night ended up with singing, floggings, & the rum still flowing.
See much more of the Pirates in Paradise festival ...
