The Pyrate Cyber News -- Free to all who ask
Past NQG Email Newsletters
July to December 2008

We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas.  These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine.  If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us.  Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month.  Below are some past email notices.  Be aware, some links and information on older messages could be obsolete.

THANKSGIVING PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Bring Cap'n Jack Back to D-Land
    NOLA Pyrate Week
        Pacific Coast Pirate Festival
            and more ...

Ahoy Crew,

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Hope you enjoy feasting with yer crews, families and friends. Be sure to store up yer energy for all that pillage and plunder taking place on Black Friday. And for those of you headin' out to Pirates in Paradise, hope you all have a rollickin' good time.

Here is a turkey recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing. When I found this recipe, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out. Give this a try.

8 - 15 lb. turkey
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is best)
1 cup uncooked popcorn (any brand)
Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush turkey well with melted butter salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for the popping sounds. When the turkey's ass blows the oven door open and the bird flies across the room, it's done.
[Thanks to Scupper for the recipe]

HELP BRING CAP'N JACK BACK TO DISNEYLAND
****************************************
As of Nov. 15, all of the Captain Jack Sparrow face characters at Disneyland have been banished from Disneyland (but not at DisneyWorld), i.e. let go, under the guise that their "budget" cannot handle the most popular character in the park, due to the recent addition of PIXIES to Disneyland to promote the new Tinkerbelle movie coming out.
Captain Sunny Fox [sunnyfox@aol.com]is heading up a lettering writing campaign. See our blog in the blog section of the NQG MySpace page for more details and advice on how to write letters and what to say. SHIPWRECK! CAPTAIN KIDD
***********************
A documentary about find the shipwreck of the Quedah Merchant aired Nov. 18, on National Geographic Channel. It is also currently on my "Video on Demand" for free until Dec. 3. So check your cable provider to see if you have access to it also, or keep an eye on NatGeo Channel.
Richard Zacks, featured in the documentary, wrote to tell us:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
... However, the very good news is that wood sample tests in July confirmed that the shipwreck/ship was built of wood from India! making it 99.9% that this is the Quedagh Merchant since the odds of another India-built ship with 30 17th century cannons in that location, of the correct dimensions is extremely slim. The documents say the Quedagh Merchant was "Suratt-built". Other documents put it at Isla Catalina off DR.
MODERN PIRACY
*************
We live in interesting times when pirates are in all the headlines, and they aren't talking about Captain Jack Sparrow. We've been talking to reporters and radio shows left and right, comparing modern piracy with pirates of old. I talked to a reporter from the U.K. in the middle of the night for over half an hour a few days ago. Just talked to a reporter from the Washington Post for an hour yesterday. An article is probably coming out later this week.
NQG AND PIRATES IN THE NY TIMES
*********************************
We were quoted in last Sunday's NY Times Style section in an article about pirate reenactors:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/26/fashion/26pirates.html?_r=3&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
I was trying to let the reporter know that the Captain Jack Sparrow thing has been overdone and some are tired of it while others are willing to play with it, even if they are ones interested in historical accuracy. Regarding the "crew of pirate history zealots", those weren't my exact words. I was telling the reporter how the Alliance of the Doublecross crew tries to be very historically authentic, but also that they are willing to "play" and interact with the Jack Sparrow types. The way it comes off in the article might be interpreted as if they are out to lynch the Jack Sparrow types. I didn't mean that at all. Hopefully readers will understand they are just "playing" from the comment about the harlot ransom demand. I personally enjoy Jack Sparrow in small, well-done, doses.
If you haven't seen our NQG home page recently, you might enjoy the first couple of photos there, shot in the Alliance of the Doublecross camp at the Ojai Pirate Festival, with Captain Jack Sparrow: http://www.noquartergiven.net/index.htm
REPERCUSSIONS TO THE NY TIMES ARTICLE
*****************************************
Embarrassment for St. Augustine?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Someone in St. Augustine who read the NY Times article, sent out a letter about the upcoming "St. Augustine Pirate Gathering". With such a reputation for well-executed living history events, he was afraid having an event similar to the Tybee Pirate Festival would be an embarrassment to the city. Many pirate reenactors have since come out in favor of the event, and of the Jack Sparrow Wannabees. Read more in the next issue of No Quarter Given

As It Happens
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having seen the article, the CBC radio show "As It Happens" wanted to interview me for their show airing tonight (Oct. 30, 2008). It has already aired in the Eastern Time Zone. In the Southern California area, it will air on KPCC 91.9 FM (Pasadena) at 11 pm tonight. If you missed hearing it broadcast, listen to the interview on an archived show or podcast at: http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/
My interview starts about minute 21 in the first Part.
L.O.R.E.
*******
We had a great slate of classes at L.O.R.E. on Oct. 18 and 19th, in Corona, California. For me, it was probably one of the most educational L.O.R.E. weekends I've ever been to. And for a bonus, we had beautiful weather.
I didn't know there was so much to know just about rope! In Lindsey Philpot's Knot class, I was blown away learning there is right-layed rope and left-layed rope, and one type is used on one side of the ship, and vice versa. As much as I've hauled lines on tall ships, I never knew that. After learning how rope is made, and from what, and how to store it and preserve it, Lindsey taught us some basic knots, giving us mnemonic rhymes to remember how they are formed.
    After learning a few dicing and card games from Michael Lampe (and how to cheat at them), then Dave Nelson brought out his arsenal. With several dozen working firearms on demonstration, Dave really clarified in my mind the difference between all the major types of firelocks and how they function. Following his class, Bryan Dunn brought out HIS arsenal, laying out several dozen bladed weapons. Bryan demonstrated the various types of blades and explained how they evolved, how they were made and used, and the various advantages and disadvantages.
    Karen "Piranha" Balentine explained several facets to improving a pirate persona through method acting, by using dialects and accents (and how to obtain them), applying special effects make-up (I want to try rigid collodion), making everything you wear look filthy dirty (even though you wash it), and properly distressing your garb and props. Then costumer Valerie Blair showed us her CLEAN and beautiful garments, demonstrating how a woman of the period would dress, from inside to out, and from head to toe. Alex Barrios covered what men of the period would wear, as well as building on the information we got from Karen
Then we played a rousing game of Jeopardy, using the information we had learned over the weekend. Congratulations to our winners Martin "Greydog" Blackwell, and Cantankerous Jan as our 1st and 2nd place winners respectively.
    A hearty thank you to all who taught, and to all who came.
If you missed this L.O.R.E., the Spring L.O.R.E. is scheduled for Feb. 28-March 1. Mark yer log books and calendars.
UPDATE ON PIRATE LASS STUCK IN ECUADOR
******************************************
[This following message is from Linda Lea, known in pirate circles as "Scatter Sally", good friend to Robin Grattidge of Medieval Fantasies. A while back we told you about her predicament, stuck in Ecuador, with an expired visa, trying to get back to the states, healing from a bad injury to her leg, ripped off by so-called "crew", and looking for more crew.]:
God bless you all! Yes my health is superior. I have recently moved up river where it is peaceful and have easy access to shore. The motors are up and running... The weather window for navigation north is between the end of November through the month of January.
I have been working diligently doing what is within my abilities to get her ready. I love you guys!
Robin is a mate from way back. He was there for me when my husband was killed and has been ever after. He's a guardian angel!
I would be grateful for someone would was savvy with diesel mechanics. The ship was tested last week and the main engine is running very well. I am having a bit of trouble with the auxiliary motor over heating. She runs well but is not cooling properly. (The auxiliary is for recharging batteries, and running navigation electronics while under sail.) Not a serious problem.
The rigging needs inspection and maintenance. Although here are cruisers helping me with preparing her, they are part time and have their own boat projects as well. So, rigging experience would be helpful...
The support has been phenomenal!.
As for my visa, there will be a fine and I will pay that to get my exit papers. Simple, just pay to go. However, once paid I will be required to leave. For this reason I am waiting for check out day. Then I will pay my fines and off we go. (If I settle this problem now I will have to leave as soon as the fine is paid ... This is inevitable but will not effect anyone who comes here, financially or hinder the grand exodus.)
I have no set schedule, nor expectations. I am taking each day as it comes and consider any help a blessing.
Please let me know what other information you require. At you service and best regards, Linda Lea Stephens
COLUMBUS DAY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Jamaica Rose on Bilgemunky
L.O.R.E.
Portland Pirate Festival Ticket Winners
and more ...
Ahoy Lads and Lasses,
Hope you all had a great Talk Like A Pirate Day. We had a fairly quiet day setting up our booth for the Pirates Cove at the Oceanside Harbor Days, and spending the evening in the Port Royal Privateers camp, but we heard there were some great parties and celebrations all about. It was great meeting all of you who came to the Oceanside Harbor Days. We debuted our booth annex of our new little ship kiosk, which in the future might show up on its own at smaller or indoor events. It was great spending Sat. night watching the pirate battle between the Lynx and the shore artillery from the upstairs of the Jolly Roger restaurant, followed by great music by the Pirates of the Black Swan and the Doxie Chicks, and then pirate karaoke.
The following weekend we visited the Gold Coast Pirate Festival in Ojai. We are usually vendors there, so it was a nice change just to be visitors and have more time to go to the various camps and visit with friends (Rogues of the Golden Coast, Rumrunners, and Alliance of the Double Cross), watch the shows (Lord Rusty from New Zealand was quite a hoot), enjoy the music (Pirates Charles are an event in themselves, and Marooned is always great) and do a little shopping. The cannons of the Alliance of the Double Cross made quite a ruckus. Things got a little exciting when one of the Double Cross men came across a snoozing Jack Sparrow, and he made off with Jack's sword. Later when Jack came looking for his blade, the Double Alliance offered to return the blade in exchange for a redhead and a blonde. But then Jack was put into the stocks by the Royal Navy (whom you can now see on the No Quarter Given home page). Jack was eventually released, with blade back in possession. (Brandon was a great sport to play along). We were happy to see our friend Commodore Norrington (Tom) for one last before he returned home to the Philippines. But we are hoping that our NQG readers will meet him again in the pages of NQG, for he has offered to contribute some articles about piracy in the Philippines.
FLORIDA DIVERS NEED YOUR HELP
 *****************************
 [A letter from the daughter of Mel Fisher, salvager of the Atocha treasure, to Florida legislators:]
Against 1A-31Rule Change Set for Hearing on Oct 21, 2008
Dear Honorable Mr. Bennett, I have grave concerns over the proposed rule change 1A-31! I have been in the private sector salvage business since 1979 and have firsthand seen the evolution of process and technology in both the private, commercial, public, university, and non profit sector, and govt. My father was Mel Fisher. My parents were pioneers in this commercial industry along with Art McKee, Kip Wagner, Robert Weller, Harold Holden, Jack Haskins, Carl Fismer, and many others. This proposed rule is unconstitutional, vague, and gives much arbitrary treatment leverage to the Florida DGR. This new rule disallows any salvage within 500 yards of any public beach, which pretty much entails the entire coast of Florida's vast amount of historical shipwrecks. There are many flaws in this Rule which I have listed in the attached PDF file. I hope you help stop this absurd rule making.
Respectfully, Taffi Fisher Abt 6780 - 85th Street Vero Beach, FL 32967
I emailed each of these legislators today! I need at least 6 of you to do the same. They are on the committee of oversight that could stop this stupid and unconstitutional rule change (JAPC) SIX EMAILS FROM DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS A DAY WILL GET THEIR ATTENTION Links to their email address are attached.
CRUSOE IS LOOKING VERY GOOD
***************************
Looks like we will be richly rewarded after a long television drought of mostly reality shows following the writers strike. "Crusoe" will be airing on NBC on Fridays this fall, debuting October 17. This show based on the original "Robinson Crusoe" classic by Daniel Defoe looks quite promising for a period drama. Since pirates feature in the classic story, (even Alexander Selkirk, whom the story was based on, was a buccaneer), the promo promises "pirate's treasure", and there is a character named Pirate Lucy, we can be hoping for some good piratical action. With Sam Neill and Sean Bean <be still my heart> in this show, I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is a worthwhile series. From the production photos online and from TV promos the costuming, props, and sets look to be well done. It looks like the producers have heavily pillaged "Swiss Family Robinson" for the tree house idea. Can we hope for more than just a little historical accuracy in this series? SANTA MARIA NEEDS SOME HELP
***************************
From Jennie & Mark Gist: Columbus, Ohio has a full-size working replica of the Santa Maria floating on the Scioto River. The ship operates on a shoestring (even with 16,000+ visitors a year) and recently, unexpectedly had $30,000 cut from its budget for 2008. Things look very gloomy for 2009 as the city continues to slash its own budget. It would be GREAT if there's a generous buccaneer out there, somewhere, with a treasure chest to share with the Santa Maria -- BUT very small donations would help too! Pirate birthday parties (!!) on the ship are a source of extra cash ... and we're having a "Talk Like a Pirate Day" piratical gathering on Sat. Sept. 20 (yep, day late and a dollar short). Feel free to put this event on your calendar. Where else can you go in the Midwest to tread the boards of a period sailing ship? Mark and I care very much about the Santa Maria, having put in more than 5,000 volunteer hours between us. (We're some of those eastern reenactor piratical types.) If you would share a bit of this with your readers, we'd be grateful. Thanks, Jennie Gist Mark Gist http://avast-me-hearties.blogspot.com/
SHEBUCCANEER
Previous NQG contributor Larry Byrd writes to us about a comic series, SheBuccaneer: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some years ago my then-partner on comic books and I did a 3-issue limited series of SheBuccaneer comics for a publisher called Monster comics. I’m happy to announce that he has started his own publishing company, and he and his wife are continuing the character in a new series of three issues. #2 is currently available in comic shops, or you can find ordering information at the following website: shebuccaneer.com  , and you can send messages to: avast@shebuccaneer.com
. He will be continuing the title after he introduces his second comic with it's own limited series... and the guy is an unbelievably good comic artist!
Ahoy the crew,
The Los Angeles and San Diego Festival of Sail events are over. It was great meeting many of you at these great maritime celebrations. But maritime celebrations are not yet over this year in Southern California. Later this afternoon, No Quarter Given will be in Dana Point setting up for the Toshiba Tall Ships festival this Saturday and Sunday. If you're in the area, come find our booth (near the Port Royal Privateers camp). For more details: http://www.tallshipsfestival.com/
The Oceanside Harbor Days will be the last event where No Quarter Given will be setting up shop in Southern California for 2008. It takes place Sept. 20-21. After a great first start last year, the Pirates Cove area will be much expanded, with a lot more activities, entertainment, and vendors, including Cannon battles, cruises, pirate dinner show (at the Jolly Roger restaurant -- how appropriate!), and several pirate crews. There WILL be food vendors in the Pirates Cove area as well. For more details: http://www.oceansidechamber.com/harbordays/index.html
Kulas Pyrat Party Band, Pirates Charles, Pirates of the Black Swan). We hope everyone has fun there.
EXTREME MAKEOVER PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Extreme Pirate Makeover
    Mallory Update
        Where to Find NQG
            Piratical License Plates
                and more ...
Ahoy the crew,
This is a very quick message with some urgent news, as I'm in between
events trying to get the next issue of No Quarter Given finished up.
The producers of ABC's "Extreme Makeover" show need pirates for a
production this coming weekend in LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS. I know this is short notice, very short notice. Not only do they need pirates, but
they are hoping to obtain some sort of pirate ship vehicle, like one of
the parade vehicles some of the crews have. I do not know what kind of
recompense might be available for this. You will have to negotiate for
that. The shoot date for the demolition is this Sat. August 16.
Here is the explanation from Nadim Amiry, the producer:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One major element that is part of every episode is the demolition of the
original structure. The family that we will be building a house for in
Arkansas has a 10 year old boy who is suffering from Leukemia, but is
also a major fan of Pirates of the Caribbean and loves all things
pirates. To honor that, we thought it would be fun to create a pirate
themed demolition. Ideally, we would have some sort of pirate
re-enactment group, preferably one with a pirate ship vehicle and a
cannon that would make the initial attack on the house. I have begun to
reach out to different pirate groups in the region, but have not been
able to find anyone very close to the Little Rock area. I am hoping to
connect with a group either today or tomorrow that might be willing to
be involved in this episode. Please email or call me at the numbers
provided below.

Good luck to any of you who get involved with this. Let me know how it
goes and maybe we can write about it in No Quarter Given.

UPDATE ON MALLORY & McCALL
*******************************
In past NQG emails we told you about Mallory's back operation in Dec.
07, and his subsequent relapse and illness in January. This is why
musicians Mallory and McCall and the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band are not performing this season.

Below, Jan, aka "Mac the Wife" gives an account of what's happened since January.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So the weeks went by and, bit by bit Mallory began to make some small
improvements. But then he again started to feel worse and became
severely bent over in pain. Finally, about a week ago, the surgeon took yet another x-ray and
discovered that the vertebrae right above the fusion fractured and was
collapsing. The current opinion is that this had begun on a microscopic
level shortly after the December surgery, at least partly causing the
crisis in January, but we don't yet know, and perhaps never will.
Up until about a month ago, we were still hoping somehow to come to Ojai [Gold Coast Pirate Festival]. Sadly, that won't be the case. Just about the time the fair is happening they will be fusing his entire spine
below the neck (replacing the metal implant put in before, in what is
now being called a "failed surgery". He will be recuperating for from a
year to eighteen months! Chances are that the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band will be on a long hiatus. Mallory and I may try to do some light
recording during this period, perhaps with our two super side men Patch and Cannonball adding tracks, but for what seems like a very long time, the SCPB will not be performing live while its Captain gets ready to return, very straight and tall. We are hoping that others will continue
to sing our songs and buy our CDs!
In the meantime, we have been victims of a very nasty fraud. We have
been swindled out of all our money and probably our house unless the
money can be recovered in the next month or so. Briefly, we had hired
someone to invest the proceeds of a mortgage (all that we had) and
handle our money matters while Mallory was ill and my attention was
totally with him. Unfortunately, there was some bad blood in there
somewhere, and they just took our funds and stopped paying our
creditors. We can only hope that the law gets to them in time to save
our house. We are costume, musical instrument, prop, and collectable
pack rats and my moving us out of a cluttered two story Victorian house
while Mallory is in the hospital is a thought I simply cannot confront.
This is just a Reader's Digest version of our trials and normally I
wouldn't t cry in your soup, but so may nice folk have asked about us,
so we decided I should send out this letter.
If you are wondering how you can help, well, if you are a
multi-millionaire and want to support a couple of ol' pirates, give us a
buzz. Otherwise, tell your friends about our PiRATE PRiMiTiVE project:
body adornments inspired by the classic theatrical Caribbean pirates.
All are hand-made and most are suitable for all sexes.
If you like, link to us at _www. MalloryandMcCall. com/PiratePrimitive. _
Working on these unusual pieces has helped to make us a tiny bit saner
and we are proud of the results. Moonstruck and No Quarter Given also
sell them at various events.
We want to thank you all for your care and interest. And don't worry.
Though we have a long and difficult sail ahead, in time we'll make it
'round the horn.
Cheers!
Jan
