We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas. These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine. If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us. Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month. Below are some past email notices. EARLY OCTOBER PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Dancing for Pirates,
L.O.R.E.,
Horatio Hornblower Auction
and much more
...
Greetings Shipmates,
Hope you all had a great Talk Like a Pirate Day (TLAPD). We heard of many
rollickin' good events out there. TLAPD was even celebrated on the International
Space Station by Astronaut Clayton Anderson, and there were reports that the
Navy personnel who staff the White House mess were talking like pirates, and
even wearing eye patches, hats and parrots.
Even Sid Meier's Pirates celebrated TLAPD. The day after TLAPD, Honest John told
us: "I got to hand it to Firaxis Games. The PIRATES! game for PCs knew
yesterday was Talk Like A Pirate Day. Every character in the game was talking
like a pirate. I LMAO when the governor's daughter unexpectedly said, 'Would ye
be wantin' to go to the ball with me, shiver me timbers'. For those of you with
the game, try it next year!"
Though the many pirate events during the summer are over, there are still many
yet to come. This coming weekend you can dance like a pirate (see below), head
to Catalina Island for Buccaneer Days or to Tybee Island for a Pirate Festival,
join the pirates at the Wilmington Riverfest in North Carolina, terrorize the
locals at the Ft. Myers Pirate Festival, or be part of the raid with Greydog in
Temecula. See our NQG On the Horizon list of events for more details on these
and other upcoming events: http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm
Also for more about Buccaneer Days at Catalina Island (off the California
Coast), see: http://www.pubclub.com/losangeles/buccaneer.htm

DANCING FOR PIRATES

the lawn (so don't wear those fancy satin dancing slippers). All ages are
welcomed. Easy period dances taught by "Mademoiselle Irene", of
Yesteryears Dancers. Semi or full pirate-era costume encouraged. No charge for
the lessons, but donations will be gratefully accepted for the musicians. Come

possible group tour of the haunted mansion in planning stages. No RSVP needed.

Orleans Creole Cafe in the gardens of the Whaley House) - come early for dinner,
or plan to stay after with the group for after-dancing refereshments at the
Creole's outdoor patio and elsewhere.

****************
Corona, CALIFORNIA. Pirate classes are still being planned. We do know that
there will be more dancing for pirates. Irene Ujda will come teach period dance,
movement and posturing for the Golden Age of Piracy. Knowing how to dance and
swagger like a pirate would be a great addition to your pirate persona. Russell
Chan will teach Superstitions & Folklore of the Sea. Learn about taverns of
the period (one of two places you were likely to find pirates on shore leave)
from Christine Lampe. Other classes haven't been locked in yet.

PIRATES OF POINT LOMA
*********************
Comes to Old Town (San Diego) in October. World premiere Oct. 12, 2007 with
previews beginning Oct. 5th. Presented at the Compadre Theatre at the Adobe
Chapel, 3950 Conde Street in Old Town San Diego.
San Diego may have been a sleepy backwater in 1850, while Northern California
was running wild with gold-rush fever, but that didn’t stop the birthplace of
California from producing its own band of genuine pirates, according to a couple
of early San Diego writers. These pirates had a base on the west side of the
Coronado Islands and they preyed on gold-laden sailing ships headed south from
San Francisco. Or so goes the story.
Pirates of Point Loma is a rousing good tale, suitable for family and visitors,
featuring a half-dozen favorite sea shanties with new lyrics and lots of
bloodthirsty action.
Preview weekend is October 5th through Oct 7th with Pay-What-You-Can admission
for performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 and 6, and also at 4 and
6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Oct. 6 and 7. Reservations are suggested.
Opens formally on Friday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. and continue weekend performances
through October at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 and 6 p.m. Saturdays and
Sundays.
Tickets available at 2476 San Diego Avenue at the SOHO Museum Shop or by calling
(619) 297-7511. Seniors, children under 12 and military are $10, all others $15.
Advance tickets are recommended.
NEW EVENTS ON THE HORIZON

November 9th & 10th, 2007: Saint Arrrgustine Pirate Gathering
Saint Augustine, FLORIDA

NEW OSPREY BOOK
***************
Last time we gave notice of a new Osprey book "Scourge of the Seas:
Buccaneers, Pirates and Privateers"
http://www.ospreypublishing.com/title_detail.php/title=T2113
Garrison Keelhauler wrote to tell us "I just had to mention that the new
book from Osprey you mention ... is basically the three older trade paperbacks
from Osprey (concerning Pirates, Bucanneers and Privateers) combined into a
hardbound book format. Some of the B & W illustrations from the previous
books have been colorized, but other than that there is little difference. We
don't need our brethern of the coast parting with their ill gotten plunder under
false pretenses now do we?"
Later Garrison wrote more, "I shot off me guns too soon me thinks!
"Scourge of the Seas" also includes some data and illustrations from
Konstam's book about Pirate ships (Pirate Ship 1660-1730) with a rehash of his
previous books with some new (to his books) illustrations, quite a few of which
were previously used in "Pirates" edited by Cordingly in 1996. The
text is arranged a little differently too (but not much else is really new
either). I was thinking of Konstam's "Terror on the High Seas" in my
earlier marks below. Sorry for the confusion."

http://www.piratesnplunder.net/
[From Doku, store owner:] we'll be hosting a very special Talk Like a
Pirate Day party of our own, but with a deep, heartfelt purpose, mates.
Arr own Ruby Cruzado, who is one o' the founding members
of Rillian and the Doxie Chicks, suffered a set back in her life as she and her
husband Smilin' Jack had been stranded in the Mojave Desert for nearly a day and
a half. When they arrived home here in the Southland, Ruby had been taken to a
local hospital where she was examined by physicians and was briefly in ICU for a
spell. Ruby is a strong lass, and she only was hospitalized for a short time,
bein' she was back in her home port in just the next day. However, her hospital
bills aren't going to be easy for her and Jack to find an accord with. Ruby is
unable to work, and Jack is workin' hard to keep finances together for them
both. These efforts are still not enough for these fine mates to make ends meet.
Ruby's immediate needs requires financial assistance to sustain this unplanned
hospital bill.
For those interested in helping with monetary donations,
we will be accepting donations at arr Talk Like a Pirate Day event, as we will
be featuring Bad Jack & Bloody Kate and Rillian and the Doxie Chicks in a
concert summoning assistance and help for Ruby.
We'll be sponsoring two contests for both adults and
children, a raffle for pirate swag and we will also be hosting Gail Selinger,
pirate author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Pirates." There will
be a special guest appearance by Gwen the Fierce. Also, Captain Starwise
of Celestial Seas will have personalized Nautical Astrological Chartings.

KIND-HEARTED PIRATES RESPOND
TO A FELLOW PIRATE
****************************
I am so heartened by the response many of you gave Tamara Eastman when her house
was broken into. A few days after the break in, Tamara told us "I am
completely OVERWHELMED by the generosity of the pirate community today!
This is amazing. I have received three telephone calls just in the last
hour, from Al, in Virginia Beach; Blackbeard in California; and another woman
from California. Al has offered to send two pirates here on the 10th to
help with my presentation and the lady has offered to sell me some costume
pieces at a discount price! This is amazing. Blackbeard is donating
a pirate belt. ... I’ve heard from Neal Kirk, who’s the Captain with “Free
Men of the Sea” today, and I haven’t heard from him and Donna in AGES! ...
I’ve got a zillion messages waiting for me – most of them people calling to
check on my Mom and to ask what they can do to help me with this disaster at my
house!" Tamara told me how Hatchet Meg and Fayma helped out with
clothing and props.
On the day of the school presentation Tamara wrote: "Today was
absolutely AWESOME! I had five other pirates show up from the Hampton
Roads area and they really helped to put on one spectacular show for the
students! I am completely overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from
the whole pirate community. I’ve received several boxes of costumes,
coins, tankards, and all sorts of goodies. I’d love to thank EVERYBODY
who sent something – it means so much to me. And to the pirates from
“The Moody Crew” who came out today, I am STILL hearing bravos all around
the campus! I attended class later this afternoon and the professor was
raving about how great the show was. After the show ended, most the
pirates had to leave – but Cindy Warner went with me to the nursing home, this
evening, and we did a show for the residents at supper time, in the dining room,
singing sea shantey’s, etc. ... She was STUNNED! But, she had a blast
– it really cheered her up. Several of the patients were singing along
with us, clapping, etc. It was nice to see them smiling. That’s
such a lonely place."

EARLY SEPTEMBER PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Plundered Pirate Needs Help
Black Powder Incident
End of Pirate Master
Phil Masters
& The Baron Pass On
and much more ...
Greetings Shipmates,
A fellow pirate has been plundered. Tamara Eastman (author of "The Pirate Trial of Anne Bonny and Mary Read") came home Thursday night, and found her home had been plundered and pillaged. The door had been broken away, and inside was a mess. She told us: "I was horrified at what lay before me. Everything in my home had been destroyed! Furniture was tipped over, cabinets toppled, glassware broken all to pieces, EVERYTHING in every single drawer and closet in my house had been torn out and thrown all over the house. Most of it was ripped up. They even tore into my family photo albums, took pictures out and tore them up. I had a wooden treasure chest that was loaded down with all my pirate stuff…documents, weapons, and such. All of it is gone! The whole thing was stolen! My jolly roger flag that I’ve had for over a decade is missing, the flintlock pistols, cutlasses, swords – even my pirate hat and most of my costume is gone."
Of course, the police are dealing with this, but in the meantime Tamara is due to give a school demonstration on September 10, and has no costume or props to use.
Could any of you kind-hearted pirates who live in the vicinity (near Petersburg, south of Richmond, Virginia) lend her items to use for the school program? She cannot use weapons at the school (zero tolerance strikes again), but needs other period props, such as mugs, chests, bottles, maps, etc. As for costuming, Tamara is a bit on the ample side, and is a little taller than average.
If you can help Tamara, email her at: histor2@mindspring.com
BLACK POWDER INCIDENT
*********************
[From Selchie:] I'm posting this link to a CNN report on an accident that took
place, involving re-enactors and black powder. Take careful note of where the
person's powder pouch is...
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2007/09/02/price.oh.musket.accident.wdtn
As Rotten Raphael advocates, your powder storage, i.e. pouch or horn containing
black powder, should be on the opposite side of your body to the side that
you're firing. In essence, your body should be between your firearm and powder
supply.
Let's hope that this incident doesn't have repercussions in the re-enactment
circles...

BARON VON EISENFAUST
********************
Baron von Eisenfaust (aka Eugene Eckert) went on to Fiddlers Green on August 7,
2007. He was an early Port Royal Privateer, and their first powdermaster. Before
helping form the Port Royal Privateers in 1993, he had been a member of the
Brethren of the Coast. His brother El Diablo the Crimson Pirate told us:
"It is with utmost sadness that I inform
you that Eugene Eckert, Baron von Eisenfaust has passed away. This happening
shortly after his arrival from the hospital to his family home. His passing
occurred while in the presence of his father, his aunt and myself. Thank you all
for your friendship and for making his days full of pirate fun :D Please pass
this message along to all that knew him and toast to his final voyage!"
Eugene was only 41 years old. You can see a photo of him here: http://www.noquartergiven.net/danapt97.htm
(third one down) and here:
http://www.noquartergiven.net/rogues.htm
(next to last one).
A memorial is planned to be held for the Baron at the Oceanside Harbor Days
(September 15-16, 2007, Oceanside, CA). The pirates of the Pirates Cove plan to
fire his ashes from a cannon (one of Eugene's great desires). More details of
exactly when and where will be forthcoming.

SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE ARTICLES ON PIRATES
****************************************
Keelhauler (Don Hood)tells us the August 2007 issue of Smithsonian Magazine
"has an article on Modern Piracy. It's not the greatest article and has a
couple of facts wrong (surprising for the Smithsonian!) but overall is passable.
They also mention that they have an article on Stede Bonnet on their web
page." Actually the Stede Bonnet article ("The Gentleman
Pirate")is quite interesting with some speculation and new facts about why
he took to piracy.
You can read both these articles at: http://www.smithsonianmagazine.com/issues/2007/august/index.php
PIRATE PRIMITIVE
"PIRATE MADE FOR THE PIRATE TRADE"
Help rescue some pirates in distress
**********************************
Those of you in Southern California might be familiar with
Mallory and McCall and the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band. Mac the Wife has lately
been turning her creative endeavors to making wearable art inspired by the
marlinespike knotwork of tall ship sailors, consisting of trade beads, monkey
fist knots, and other elements. There are neckpieces and dangles of many styles.
Many pieces are very masculine in nature. Others are more feminine. Some of the
pieces look similar to the neckpieces worn by Tia Dalma in POTC.
In purchasing some of these pieces you will not only acquire
some fine pieces for your garb, you will be helping a couple of pirates in
distress. Captain Mal de Mer (Mallory) has taken a cannonball in his stern and
must have it removed. Thus, for him, pillaging and the like, even musically,
will be (somewhat, at least) on hold as he stays careened for the duration. Ever
ready, Mac is taking over the helm by offering this unusual pirate treasure. So
support two of your favorite pirates during their downtime and enjoy something
special like nothing else!

SPECIAL SAILCLOTH OPPORTUNITY

FYI, if you think this is worth it, could you pass it on to your contacts? They
can contact me directly w/questions, &c.
I just received confirmation that there is a limited supply of RN4 sailcloth
available in England. It is 100% flax, 24" wide. Though in loomstate, it
will need to be treated. It will probably cost at least $25.00/yd (though I am
trying to negotiate the price). This is the same cloth we used to make the
MAYFLOWER sails. Is there any interest out there for real sailcloth? Let me
know, as the response will determine how much I buy. I fear once this lot is
gone, that will be the end of it, unless someone finances future runs.

PIRATE FUNDRAISER
TO BENEFIT ST. JUDE
*******************
[From Chris Suttle:] I'm working as a restaurant manager for Chili's Grill and
Bar in Apex NC now and every Sept. we do a national fundraiser for St Jude. This
year, we are trying to raise over $5 million to go from just a wing of the
original hospital to a whole second building in Memphis. This is a huge deal for
these kids and their families, and it's a chance for us to really make a
difference and help save some lives. I don't know if you have ever been tot he
hospital in Memphis, but I got the chance to go this year and it was unreal.
Those kids and their families are amazingly strong and the kids are awesome, so
much fun to play with.
I have arranged a "Celebrity Night" at the
restaurant where "Blackbeard" will be the host for the night, as well
as the bartender. Kids and Parents can "color a pepper" for a $1 or
more donation to St Jude and we hang them up all over the restaurant. I would be
the happiest pirate in the world if I had a few fellow buccaneers willing to
make a trip to NC to help with this event. I don't have a budget for this, have
to be up front about that. I do have one hell of a staff though who would be
more than willing to help with accommodations if necessary. I may be able to get
a hotel room or two comped since it is
tax deductible, but I don't have a definite answer from anyone yet. The Date
will be Sat., Sept 22 from 11am till 3 for the kids, then it's a little more of
an "adult" themed atmosphere from 5 to 12 with the Pirates taking over
the Bar. I will take care of all cost for food and as much of the alcohol as I
can for anyone who is willing to come and play for the day.
I have attached a few links for you to check out. Please pass
the word along for me to anyone you think might be interested. You have no idea
how much I am looking forward to helping with this cause and I hope I can see
some of you there.

THE PIRATE ROUND - NEW BOOK
***************************
A new book "The Pirate Round : Early 18th Century Maritime Navigation : How
it was Done and How to Do it Yourself" - written by Richard
Rutherford-Moore, a long-term re-enactor, historical interpreter and lecturer -
will be published in September 2007 by Heritage Books of Westminster, Maryland
USA. The book contains easy-to-understand explanations, diagrams and exclusive
photographs enabling any reader to grasp the navigational techniques of the
period 1690-1730 in addition to applying basic navigational exercises and
several anecdotes making the book an excellent sea-faring yarn to be read by any
historical mariner. The presentation methods described below are detailed in the
book with a special section on ‘Recreating the Ships’ Artist’. Amongst
other nautical enterprises at historic sites, Richard has been approached by
concerning his 18th Century Maritime Navigation display “At The World’s End”
and a ‘The Life of a Seaman in the Age of Sail’ guided ‘living history’
tour aboard a full-sized free-floating replica of a most suitable venue …

THE LEGEND OF GASPARILLA
************************
"The Legend of Gasparilla: A Tale for all Ages" by James F. and Sarah
Jane Kaserman is being run as a serialization in "The Beach Bulletin"
of Fort Myers, Florida. Starting with the July 20th, 2007 issue, it will be
printed basically a chapter each week for the next 48 weeks. Jim Kaserman told
us: "This serialization by them is in response to reader demand after Jane
and I wrote a twelve week series on The Pirates of Southwest Florica, Truth and
Fiction. So many people wanted additional
pirate tales that we signed a serialization agreement with them for both the
Garparilla pirate book as well as our "How the Pirates Saved
Christmas" which weill be serialized from mid-November through Christmas by
one of their sister Florida papers." Meanwhile, a filmmaker from Italy has
contacted them for film and screen rights of "The Legend of Gasparilla",
so there may be a film in the future.

WHAT:
“Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship,”
the world premier exhibit organized by National Geographic tells the compelling
story of the Whydah, a real pirate ship that began as a slave ship, and the
stories of the diverse people whose lives converged on the vessel.
Sunk in a fierce storm off the coast of Cape Cod in April 1717, the Whydah was located by underwater explorer Barry Clifford in 1984, becoming the first fully authenticated pirate ship to be discovered in American waters. The exhibition, with more than 200 treasures recovered from the wreck, will provide visitors with an unprecedented glimpse into unique economic, political and social circumstances of the early 18th-century Caribbean and the inextricable link between the slave trade and piracy.
* Over 150 artifacts from the first authenticated pirate shipwreck found in

PIRATE MASTER IS CANCELLED PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
We have sad news to announce that CBS has marooned "Pirate Master". CBS has cancelled the show. Kendra Guffey (Pirate Master participant) tells us: "CBS Will be showing the final 5 episodes online. It is still airing in 11 countries!"
Episode 9 is already online at www.cbs.com . Just go to "Full Episodes" and click on "Pirate Master". Kendra reported, "Ep 9 is online as I type. They will put up a new episode every Tuesday. Yeah!"
As for writing to CBS to protest, we don't have any specific address yet. Kendra suggested, "Just write to CBS- they are the ones who pulled it. I'd say write to whomever is in charge."
She also told us: "No one can take away the awesome 6 week time I had and the friends I made and all the fun we've had watching it! ... And I've met a ton of new pirates because of it! Its all good!"
I've a ton more news to send out. I didn't have time to include it in yesterday's pirate update, and right now I have to hurry off. My mother fell and broke her hip yesterday, so we have her pets and house to tend to, as well as dealing with hospital stuff. I'll try to get more news out later this week. We still hope to come to the "There Be Pirates" performance this Saturday at Pirates 'n' Plunder in Whittier. Hope to see a lot of you there.

END OF JULY PIRATE UPDATE

Past Events/Upcoming Events
Pirate Master
Pirates of New Providence CD
There Be
Pirates TV Appearance
and more ...
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
Whew! We've been back home for over a month now. We've had time to get out the next issue of NQG. The January/February 2007 issue was mailed out a week ago. Meant to get it sent out while we were on the road, but that just didn't happen. The next issue will be out right quick to start catching us back up on schedule.
We had a great time on our East Coast trip. Some headaches, minor problems with Long Ben Avery (our trailer's name is Long Ben, and the truck is "Avery", so together they make up the nickname of John Avery/Henry Every, and both gave us some problems), our computer, electrical connections, wireless signal for our computer, events, some VERY long, very busy days, rain (huge rain) - but we managed. And fun definitely outweighed problems. And it was profitable - well worth it (despite spending almost $2300 in gasoline). Made a lot of friends - met up in person with a lot of email friends. We are now gearing up for lots of other events coming up in Southern California.
On May 31, we arrived in Hampton Virginia, during the midst of Pyrate Pete's art show reception. As we drove past the art gallery, looking for docking space for Long Ben Avery, out on the corner were many of the same rogues and doxies we had last seen in Charleston a little more than a week prior. What an art show and reception! Even Port and Starboard (our furry crew) were allowed in to view the art. Not many art galleries are going to allow a couple of rats inside. Next day was the Buccaneers Ball - best we've ever seen in years. We had grand fun at the Hampton Blackbeard Pirate Festival, though we were so busy vending during the day we didn't see any of the events. We did cavort and sing at the campfire in the Pirate Camp Saturday night. The host group Blackbeard's Crew, and Pyrate Pete, put on a grand event. Too bad the next day was called off due to heavy rain - I had a helper coming that day, and planned to get away from the booth more. A few days later, we saw many of the Blackbeard's Crew again, at the Norfolk Harborfest and SAIL Virginia. We had a front row seat for the tall ship parade and the spectacular fireworks show, as our booth faced the river. We even had the Kalmar Nyckel docked just about 20 feet in front of us. And the stage for the Kid's Pirate Camp literally right behind our booth. The Pyrates Royale and Blackbeard (Ben Cherry) were standing behind us about 10 feet while they gave their shows. Business was good, and we were really glad for our booth helpers Johnsie and Kelly.
We then hightailed it back across the country (with a short overnight visit with our daughter Evaine, who just made Captain in the USAF) to get to the Northern California Pirate Festival for the next weekend. Despite being their first year, this was a grand event! Two huge full-sized masts flanked the entrance to the festival. The main stage had a full-sized ship as it's backdrop, with such notables as Tom Lewis and Skip Henderson singing on stage. A ship to shore cannon battle raged each day. Many of the actors from "Pirates of the Caribbean" gave out autographs. Michelle Amsbury, Steve Morales, and the rest of their festival crew did a splendid job.
Back in southern California finally, the Pier Daze Pirate Festival was a one day event literally held out on a pier in Long Beach (setting up our booth on asphalt and lashing it down well enough to withstand the heavy afternoon wind gusts was a challenge). It was a lot of fun though - we could watch the pirate battle from out booth, and see a lot of the action, enhanced with the hilarious running play-by-play commentary over the loudspeaker from Jules Evermore all day long. Next year they plan to expand the pirate festival to two days (this year the festival continued on Sunday as just a pier festival, but without the pirates). Then on the 4th of July weekend we camped with NQG Buccaneers at the Old Fort MacArthur Days in San Pedro. This was the first encampment for this crew headed up by my captain and husband Michael MacLeod, and organized by Duncan MacGregor. What fun at this timeline event, raiding the Roman camp and Western settlers, rescuing one of our rogues being flogged by the Romans, firing our cannons on Civil War troops and the gattling guns. Everyone from all through history made their way to the party in the pirate camp on the top of the hill -- we had Russians, Romans, and Redcoats, ... WAVEs, WACs, and WWII GIs, ... cowboys and Indians, and more, drinking, dancing and paryting.
Look for reports on some of these events in the March/April issue, with the rest to follow in the May/June issue.
WHERE NEXT TO FIND NQG?
**************************
Next, look for the NQG booth at the Taste in San Pedro. Maybe it doesn't sound
piratey, but there will a quite an invasion of pirates here. August 4th &
5th, 2007: A Taste In San Pedro (with Pirates). San Pedro, CALIFORNIA. A variety
of cuisine, wines & beers are showcased along with entertainment. Among the
many attractions of the "Taste" this year, see a PIRATE PLUNDERING by
"The Buccaneers of Tortuga" featuring "Capt. Jack Sparrow."
The pirates will be doing storytelling for the children and interacting with all
of the guests. Point Fermin Park, Gaffey & Paseo del Mar, San Pedro. For
more info: (310) 832-7272, visit www.tasteinsanpedro.com or e-mail: Taste@sanpedrochamber.com
Next, Aug. 18-19, we'll be at the Port Hueneme Sea Festival, right on the coast,
south of Oxnard & Ventura. http://www.huenemebeachfest.org/ Pirates should
be invading here as well, but we are waiting to hear more details.
Our September calendar is very full. You'll find us at various events in southern California, ... at the Toshiba Tallships Festival in Dana Point (Sept. 8 & 9), Oceanside Harbor Days (Sept. 15 & 16), Gold Coast Pirate Festival in Ojai (Sept. 22 & 23, and 29 & 30) . See the NQG calender for more details on these and other upcoming events around the country and the world: http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm
OCEANSIDE HARBOR DAYS
*************************
The Oceanside Harbor Days (September 15th & 16th, 2007), a well established
event (running since 1901), has finally come to their senses and realized they
need pirates at their event. They have asked No Quarter Given to help them
organize a Pirates Cove at one end of this Northern San Diego County event, next
to the Jolly Roger restaurant (how appropriate!!). There will be tall ships
(Spirit of Dana Point and the Californian), ship to shore cannon battle, pirate
vendors, pirate camps (host group are the NQG Buccaneers) and more. Relax &
save gas -- close to the Oceanside Metrolink/Coaster train station with bus
shuttles -- both trains follow the scenic California shoreline to get to
Oceanside. Interested pirate groups, participants, and vendors contact:
Christine Lampe: jamaica@noquartergiven.net, 951-785-1233.
PIRATE MASTER
***************
Pirate excitement is continuing through the summer with the survivor-type
reality show "Pirate Master". As of Episode 8 last week, Kendra Guffey,
the one pirate reenactor who made it onto the show as a participant, hasn't
gotten the black spot yet. Though originally airing on Thursday, the show has
moved to Tuesdays at 10 pm (E/P) on CBS. You can catch up with the show (or
relive the action) by watching all the episodes online at www.cbs.com
Look for an interview with Kendra in the March/April issue of NQG.

"THERE BE PIRATES" ANOTHER MUSICAL ADVENTURE AT PIRATES 'N'
PLUNDER, JULY 28
*******************************
[From Shanghai Brown, of There Be Pirates:] Ahoy me mateys, I'd like ta be
invitin' ye ta join us at the world's largest pirate store, Pirates n' Plunder,
in Whittier, for a special televised performance of There Be Pirates!,
California's premiere pirate jam band, at 8 p.m., Saturday, July 28. That's
right, HDNet TV will be there filming the performance for one of their national
shows, and there will be refreshments and pirate enthusiasts in attendance from
around Southern California. We're hoping many of our mates from the Port Royal
Privateers will be joining us as we go wild on the ran-tan in Whittier! The
television crew is slated to begin filming pirate re-enactors and the band at
around 6 p.m., with the band performing songs from their upcoming CD, Drink
& the Devil, from 8 until at least 10 p.m.
There is no cost for admission, and there will be a dance
floor for those pirate conga lines we love. So, please join us for a special
national television recording and live performance at
Pirates n' Plunder, 7013 Greenleaf Avenue, Whitter, CA 90602, 562-698-9400, on
Saturday, July 28.
And remember - this is your chance to be a Yo-ho Ho on
national television - dress like a pirate, dance like a pirate, and take home a
little booty! Here is some info on the TV show, Deadline, that will be at our
July 28 Pirates n' Plunder show from HDNet TV to film us. HDNet is available
through the high definition packages on DirecTV, DISH, Time Warner, and a lot of
other satellite and cable companies. You can check them out at www.hd.net
. They are coming to film our performance, but that's just the beginning. The TV
crew is scheduled to arrive around 6 p.m., with two hours for filming prior to
our performance. They would like to meet as many pirate re-enactors as possible,
discuss piracy with them, and even do a pirate makeover of the show's hostette
(clothes, makeup, weaponry, etc. - in other words have fun playing pirate while
learning something about it in the process, and sharing it with the audience).
The idea I have is to give the TV people everything they need for their show in
the space of one evening - the world's largest pirate store, the world's best
pirate re-enactors, the world's best pirate jam band - you get the drift. I
think it will make for a great show, and so I humbly ask for your assistance by
encouraging you to arrive around 6 p.m. to help make the show a success. Anyone
interested in helping conduct a pirate makeover of the hostette, please contact
me at shanghaibrown@yahoo.com , or
760-367-6410.
Thankee kindly,
Shanghai Brown

[Ed. Note: There Be Pirates has a CD in the works, due to come out soon. I've
heard a demo disk of this CD, and I look forward to reviewing the final CD for
NQG.]

PYRATECON 2008
****************
As pirates are wont to do, there's been a mutiny, and new management has taken
over the PyrateCon website at: www.pyratecon.com
The site was taken down during the interim, but is now back up with all new
content and new details for the 2008 event. There has been much confusion over
memberships, vending fees, and sponsorships paid before this new management took
over. There is a PyrateCon Forum available through Yahoo Groups at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PYRATECONFORUM/
Talk with others interested in PyrateCon there, and get many of your
questions answered. We at NQG had a grand time at the first PyrateCon, and have
the best hopes that the 2nd PyrateCon will be just bigger and better.

BILGEMUNKY RADIO NOW ON PODCAST
**************************************
[From Bilgemunky:] That's right - no longer do you have to be a slave to
the clock in order to enjoy Bilgemunky Radio! Listen at your own convenience, at
home or on the go! Visit www.bilgemunky.com/radio and select from Bilgemunky
Radio, Bilgemunky After Dark, or both. Bilgemunky Radio is the primary
broadcast, featuring about two and a half hours of (mostly) family friendly
pirate music. Bilgemunky After Dark is generally the final half hour show
extension, and highlights the naughtiest of the naughty in sea shanties and
swashbuckling tunes. The Bilgemunky Radio Podcast is still very much
experimental. Please let me know how it works for you, and if you encounter any
problems or have any suggestions.
Yours in swashbucklery,

WATCH SWASHBUCKLING MOVIES ONLINE
*****************************************
Several swashbucklers can be watched online. These movies showed easily for me,
nothing to download, and I could re-size the screen to watch while I did other
computer tasks. You can peruse other movies in the right hand column. There's
even classic Popeye cartoons. What a treasure trove, and all free!

THE DANCING PIRATE (1936)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7400249333115692543
Though this was the first technicolor movie ever, the online version is black
and white. What fun though, watching the Great and All-Powerful OZ as the Alcade.
Based very loosely on the pirate raids on California ports by Hippolyte Bouchard
in 1818. The dancing master character is very loosely based on the true story of
Joseph Chapman, who deserted from Bouchard's raiding party in Monterey.
Actually, very little piratical action in the movie. And Joseph Chapman isn't
remembered for his dancing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CAPTAIN SCARLETT (1953)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6134906973714908763
Not pirate, but plenty of swashbuckling action, featuring star Richard Greene,
more known as the star of the 50's era TV show "The Adventures of Robin
Hood". This one shows in color.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LONG JOHN SILVER (1954)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8836297929506863295
This is the sequel to the classic "Treasure Island", with Robert
Newton. Introduces characters that continued in the TV series of "Treasure
Island". Shows in color. [thanks to Lance Oszko]
