We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas. These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine. If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us. Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month. Below are some past email notices. AT WORLD'S END PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
At World's End is released
Pirate Master Debut
Charleston Tall Ships
Angus McBride
Leaves Us
Software Piracy
and more ...
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
The weekend we have long awaited is at long last here .... the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars! But wait ... that's not what you were waiting for, you say? Could it you've been waiting for the final installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy: At World's End? There is a connection though - Pirates of the Caribbean has revived the pirate movie genre just in the same way Star Wars revived and revolutionized the science fiction genre. I'm still waiting and hoping for this new surge of pirate movie popularity to bring forth some REAL pirate movies - based on the historical pirates, such Blackbeard, Roberts or Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Much as I enjoy POTC, I would love to see a good story of Blackbeard brought forth. Years ago there was talk of Kevin Kostner producing a movie named "Ocracoke", with Sean Connery as Teach, and Kostner as Maynard ... I can only wish ... but that was shortly after "Water World" and "CutThroat Island" and no one one would touch a pirate movie after them.
Now for those of you who haven't yet learned your lesson from POTC1 and
POTC2, make sure you wait through ALL the credits for an extra scene at the end
of At World's End. You NEED to see it. You MUST see it. You've been properly
warned, says I.
PIRATE MASTER DEBUTS NEXT WEEK
*******************************
Pirate excitement is going to continue through the summer with the debut of
"Pirate Master". The show will start airing on Thursday, May 31st on
CBS at 8:00 PM, the old Survivor time slot. One of our own, Kendra Guffey, a
southern California pirate, made it on to the show. She is apparently the only
"real pirate" to have made it on the show. You all should root for her
as you watch. We've heard tell some of you are making plans for regular Thursday
night pirate get-togethers to watch
the show.

CHARLESTON TALL SHIPS
*********************
We had a grand time at the Charleston Tall Ships festival. The pirate camp was
very well done. It did my heart good to see so many authentic looking pirates
(and not a Jack Sparrow clone amongst the crew). The people, especially the
children, were so excited to see the pirates. Here's to the captains and the
cooks (thanks for inviting us to dinner - the food was scrumptious). It was
grand seeing the "Gloria" come into port in the pouring rain out of
the grey skies, yet all the cadets were out "manning the yard" for an
amazing site. Despite the rain on Thursday during the tall ship parade and
pirate village set up, the rest of the weekend gave us mighty fine weather. It
was grand to finally meet up with NQG contributor Jim Goodwin (maker
extraordinaire of Ships in Bottles). Congratulations to the citizens of
Charleston on your new tall ship
"Spirit of South Carolina".

PIRATE ARTIST ANGUS MCBRIDE
***************************
Military, Pirate, and Role-Playing artist Angus McBride passed away May 15. His
artwork graces many an book that I, and many of you, own. We are sorry to lose
such a wonderful artist.

SOFTWARE PIRACY INDEED
**********************
The first morning of the Charleston Tall Ships, I received an email from one of
our UK shipmates ("Tall Paul" Adams) directing me to take a look at a
particular website for a magazine based out of London, thinking an image used
there looked very familiar to something he had spotted on the NQG website.
http://digital-lifestyles.info/2007/05/15/international-software-piracy-rate-remains-at-a-third/
The image of Cap'n Jack is that of Jack O'Kelly, taken in Key West on the eve of
the DVD release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. The
second image is a cover from Richard Becker's "Pirate Tales". I
thought it was very funny what they had done with the photos, but ... piracy is
piracy. So I sent the following message to the editor:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Digital Lifestyles,
I find it very amusing that your article on software piracy by Michael Slocombe
posted at
<http://digital-lifestyles.info/2007/05/15/international-software-piracy-rate-remains-at-a-third/>
is guilty of piracy itself. You have taken a photo from our No Quarter Given
website (with some caption doctoring) to use with your article. It would have
been nice if you would have given us a heads up on this to ask permission, or at
least given us photo credit. If you will give a link to our website <http://www.noquartergiven.net>
under the photo we'll be glad to let the matter rest at this point.
Additionally, the second image you use is one by an acquaintance of mine,
Richard Becker. It is the cover of one of his pirate graphic novels. I am
sending him a copy of this message, so you may be hearing from him as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not five minutes later, my cell phone rang. It was the Digital Lifestyles
editor, calling from the U.K.!!!!! I've never had a phone
call from the U.K before. Or such quick response. He was very concerned, and
promised to give the photo credits we requested. He further told me he was
calling from the Isle of Wight, a hotbed of piracy in days of yore, so he found
the convergence to be very amusing. I love the connectedness the Internet brings
us.
TRUE CARIBBEAN PIRATES IS BACK
******************************
For those who haven't yet seen the documentary "True Caribbean
Pirates", or want to see it again, here's your chance. Be sure to look for
yours truly commentating, and my co-editing husband Michael shows up in most
every dockside and shipboard scene.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Message from Tim Prokop, the director]
The pirates are back !!! If you're in the mood to go a-piratin, True Caribbean
Pirates will once again fire a broadside into the seas of prime time television.
(2 hours feature length documentary) Memorial Day Weekend - Sunday, May 27th on
the History Channel 8pm and 12pm east coast time; 5pm and 9pm Pacific Time. For
anyone wondering how the show performed first time around, the US rating was
spectacular (prime time premiere ended a 2.25). The international ratings were
sharper than a well-oiled cutlass? double in India, triple in Australia, up 65%
in the UK, quadruple in Korea, double in Brazil etc. The show experienced
average worldwide increases in viewers of between 100% and 200% with a few
countries that even exceeded these numbers.
Best,
CUTTY SARK ON FIRE
******************
Fire devastates historic Cutty Sark
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uklatest/story/0,,-6648878,00.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
21ST MAY STATEMENT
The Cutty Sark Fire
Statement From Richard Doughty,Chief Executive, Cutty Sark Trust 21st May 2007 -
A fire broke out this morning at 4.45am this morning at the Cutty Sark in
Greenwich,which was put out by the London Fire Brigade by 06.28am. The ship was
undergoing a major conservation project and everyone involved in the project is
devastated.It was a quarter of the way through and so much work has already been
carried out. However, 50% of the ship had been removed for conservation
reasons,including the masts,the coach house and significant amount of
planking,so it could have been a lot worse. We know that there is major damage
to the tween decking and some of the ship ’s iron work has buckled but we have
yet to assess the full extent of the damage. When the original fabric of the
ship is lost, the touch of the craftsman is lost, history is lost. To lose the
timbers and iron frame of the ship is to lose not just maritime heritage but
part of our national heritage.We must save as much as we can and hopefully the
fire has left us much to still conserve. This is a significant blow for us,and a
major set back to the people working on the project.It will take us a
significant amount of effort and funding to get the work back on track.£25m
pounds was needed to preserve the ship; we had £18m pounds raised already and
now we are appealing for help close the funding gap and to get us through the
crisis and return the ship to its former glory. One thing is certain - we will
now redouble our efforts to save the world ’s most famous clipper ship.It has
been rescued twice before,in 1922 and 1953 – this will be third time lucky.
Now more than ever the Cutty Sark needs support from all her friends across the
world. Details of how to make a donation are available on the Cutty Sark website
at http://www.cuttysark.org.uk or donations can be sent to the Cutty Sark Trust
at 2 Greenwich Church Street, Greenwich SE10 9BG
[thanks to Shanghai Brown]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUGGESTION FROM A NQG READER
The Cutty Sark was damaged by fire this morn, Disney will make millions on
another Pirates movie this weekend. If Disney were to move or be moved quickly
to make public donation to restoring the Cutty Sark they could get free
publicity ahead of the movie opening and the Cutty Sark could sail once more.
The only downside being that Disney would probably want the sails cut to look
like mouse ears, but we can deal with that when the time comes.
UPDATE ON THE PIRATE WHO HAS
LOST HER HOMETOWN TO A TORNADO
****************************
To Recap: Greensburg, Kansas was virtually wiped off the map by a F5
tornado a few weeks ago.
[From Amy Christenson:]
I just got back from Greensburg today [May 21]. ... if anyone out there is
willing to send money, I think the best place to send it is to the city itself,
for rebuilding. There are many small businesses that the community needs, and if
they don't get more support to rebuild, the whole town will be at risk. The
president of the Greensburg Bank has set up a fund to go toward just that type
of thing, and they have a good policy in place to make sure the money gets where
it needs to be, (school, hospital, etc.). Checks can be made out to "c/o
City of Greensburg" and "rebuilding fund" should be written on
the memo, which will go into a pool that will help build and stock things like
the school and the hospital.
The official address is:
Greensburg State Bank P.O. Box 787
Greensburg, Kansas 67054
I can't begin to describe how difficult it was to be there in person, but just
having the support and thoughts of so many people
helped to cheer me up while I was there, and helped me to spread some smiles
around to my friends, family, and neighbors.
Thanks so much for your thoughts.
MID MAY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Earlier POTC Release
Sail Jacksonville
Pirate has lost her hometown
PyrateCon 2008
Free Pirate
Movie Screening
and more ...
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
Happy Mother's Day to those of you who are mothers -- bless yer hearts for raising up those little pirate lads and lasses.
If you haven't yet spotted the news on the horizon, the release date for "POTC: At Worlds End" has been moved up to 8pm on Thursday, May 24. So you don't need to wait for a midnight showing. You can see it earlier in the evening and not have to take the next day off from work. Apparently the recent release of Spiderman broke previous weekend release records that "POTC: AWE" would like to exceed. For more details see: http://www.theonlinewire.com/articleView.aspx?ID=2701 http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117964457.html?categoryid=1236&cs=1
Additionally, many POTC fan groups are encouraging fans to see "POTC: AWE" end not only on opening weekend, but to return for multiple viewings at the theaters, to order to break records set by "Titanic".
We had a grand time at SAIL Jacksonville last weekend. It was a pleasure to rendezvous with the Brothers of the Coasts, and Rusty Cutlass. We also met up with Mike Daniel (discoverer of the wreck of the Queen Anne's Revenge) and Margaret Kale (Blackbeard author). You can see photos at: http://photos.jacksonville.com/mycapture/folder.asp?event=266343 See especially no. 5, to see the Brothers of the Coasts new pirate "vessel", the Tres Freres, with Cap'n Holy Mackerel at the helm. They just took possession of her, so she is still a work in progress. [For those who missed Mike Daniel, he will also be lecturing at the John Levique Pirate Days on June 11 and 12 and Bald Head Island, NC National Lighthouse Day on August 2.]
PIRATE HAS LOST HER HOMETOWN
****************************
We had the pleasure of meeting Deadly Aim (Amy Christenson) a couple of years ago at Pirates in Paradise (she was on the committee running the event). We are very sad to report her hometown of Greenburg, Kansas was nearly wiped out by the F5 Tornado that hit last weekend. Here is a message we received May 8 from her:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My hometown is Greenburg, Kansas, the town that got hit by the F5 tornado this weekend. It's the only place I've ever lived, until I came here 7 years ago. I will be going home to help my friends and family tonight, they're going to open the town for just one day (tomorrow), for everyone to get as many belongings as they can, before everything is bulldozed, (including our house).
I have put up an online photo album of Greensburg as it was before the tornado hit. Please help me by sending the link on to anyone and everyone you know, so that Greensburg can be remembered as it should be, and not by the images from the news.

EARLY MAY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
PyrateCon 2007
POTC Charity Event Tomorrow
Still looking for a bulk mailing
permit
Finding NQG
on the road,
and more ...
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
For those of you who didn't come to PyrateCon, you are going to wish you had
after you get a look at the photos Tiger Lee has posted at:
http://tigerlee.smugmug.com/Event%20Photos
(there are hundreds of photos there showing the Ball, the Parade, the Vendors,
hundreds of wonderful costumes, and the convention in general). For those of you
who were there, know that you can buy prints of the photos from this website.
They've announced the 2008 PyrateCon will be moved to a much larger hotel (Bourbon Orleans), which is a good thing because we overwhelmed the Holiday Inn. Pirates were coming out of the woodworks. The Bourbon Orleans takes up a whole block between Bourbon St. and Orleans St., right across from the Funky Pirate, right in the center of the French Quarter.
It was thunderously grand to finally meet in person many fellow pirates we've known through the 'net for a long time: The Pirate Day Guys, Mad Sally, Bilgemunky, Cliff Long and Klaus from the Pirates Magazine, George Choundas the author of Pirate Primer (not to be confused with our own NQG Pyrate Prymer), George Beahm (author of "The Caribbean Pirates"), and many many others. Every one we met was very friendly, the locals were all very hospitable, the city was very lively and colorful, we found many historical piratical spots, had fun on Bourbon Street, found some great shopping on Orleans Street (there's a great antique shop with all sorts of period firearms, powder flasks and swords). Look for a more detailed write up in the next issue of NQG.
Despite rumours of New Orleans still being under water and being a dangerous place, the French Quarter and Garden District of New Orleans are pretty much back to normal -- we felt very safe at all times (though of course we were always surrounded by pirates), and had lots of fun. The locals were thrilled that we were there, for our tourist dollars will help their city recover all the faster.
The AP news reported on PyrateCon which made CNN, and several newspapers
around the world, including Taiwan we were told:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/21/pirate.convention.ap/index.html
Many boxes of school supplies and several musical instruments were
collected to donate to a Katrina ravaged school (N.P. Trist Middle
School, 1 Pirate's Cove, Chalmette Louisiana). Friday morning pirates
boarded a school bus with the donations and headed off to invade the school,
much to the delight of the students.
We're excited and humbled to announce that Yours truly, and me husband, Michael MacLeod were made Marquis and Marchioness of the Royal Pyrate Court. Captain Slappy (of the Talk Like a Pirate Day guys) and Mad Sally (of Wench Swap, and wife to the other Pirate Guy) were made King and Queen. Ol' Chumbucket (the other Pirate Guy) was the Pyrate Pope. The knights were Francisco de la Beltraneja, Mad Eye Mitch, and Isaac Singleton (Barbossa's bosun from POTC I). The Scarlet Harlot (Fallon) was made the Royal Courtesan. Lauren Maher (Scarlet from POTC I) was the Lady in Waiting. You can see a photo of most of the court on the NQG homepage (Isaac Singleton didn't make it into the shot): http://www.noquartergiven.net
For a bunch of lads and lasses who've not organized a convention before, we thought Rudy Arceo and his crew did a great job. Sure there were hitches and mix-ups here and there, and lots of room for improvement next year. At the end of the weekend, the organizers were surveying the vendors and many of the participants to get ideas of how they can make PyrateCon 2008 even bigger and better.
A Yahoo Group has been formed for those who have in interest in PyrateCon: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PYRATECONFORUM
Free for all to join (but no spamming!)

PIRATES CAN BE FOUND AT
THE GEORGIA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
********************************
http://www.garenfest.com/
We visited the Georgia RenFaire last weekend, and were delighted to find many
piratical aspects to the festival. This festival has a permanent site, in a
beautiful wooded glen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHOPS: "The Pirate Ship" store is housed in the stern half of a full
sized ship, from which they sell swords, and other piratical gear. Don't miss
their auction at 4 pm every day of fair. Many blades and scabbards worth well
over $100 starting for $10. Between auctions they play the "Trust a
Pirate" game (for $10, $20 or ? get an unknown item in a box - we've heard
it's a great deal though). Be sure to visit the shop early, and ask for your
free raffle tickets for giveaways during the auction.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Parrots of the Caribbean was a walk-through aviary featuring many colorful
parrots and macaws. Upon spying Cap'n Michael, Patches the parrot walked from
his perch onto Cap'n Michael's shoulder and wouldn't leave. They said he never
takes to strangers, so didn't understand it. (also a Birds of Prey show).
Donations benefit Earthquest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHOWS: Ded Bob, and the Tortuga Twins perform here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RIDES: Ghosts of the Galleon Haunted Ship Attraction, and Columbus Ships.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOT PIRATICAL: Visit Mother Goose, and let her skirt-wearing goose give you a
hug! Her duck even sat on Cap'n Michael's shoulder, trying out for the role of
parrot.
TOM SAWYER ISLAND PIRATE MAKEOVER
*********************************
Tom Sawyer Island at Disneyland is undergoing a pirate makeover. No Quarter
Given has interviewed Chris Biggs, a designer working on the transition. The
interview will be featured in the next issue of No Quarter Given. The idea is
Huck and Tom have found the island headquarters of the pirates. Injun Joes cave
will become a treasure cavern with ghost pirates - including some familiar ones
from a recent movie. The Mill House is going to become a tavern for pirates.
Lots of interesting changes. The bridges will remain, the treehouse is there -
the fort is going to stay for a while but will remain closed to visitors. In
phase 2 of the island's makeover, it will be moved to the back side of the
island and will only be seen from the river or the train. The island should
reopen on the same day POTC III is released, May 25.
PIRATE PRIMER
*************
[NOTE: this book is not to be confused with the "NQG Pyrate Prymer" -
notice that our book uses "y"s instead of "i"s.]
While at PyrateCon, yours truly got to meet up with George Choundas, author of
the new "Pirate Primer" - THE manual to how to talk like a pirate. We
will be reviewing this wonderful book in the next issue of NQG, but meanwhile
you might like to get a jump on the treasure hunt contest. Each book contains a
map and clues (motivated treasure hunters might contact me -- I believe I have
correctly interpreted some of the clues, and I am open to bribes): Get the
particulars at:
ADDENDUM TO MID APRIL PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
POTC 3 World Premiere - Public Can Buy Tickets
and Lady Washington Update
and
more ...
NO QUARTER GIVEN - ADDENDUM TO MID-APRIL PIRATE UPDATE ******************************
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
We just sent out a message yesterday ago, but thought you all would want to hear this news as soon as possible, so you can start saving yer doubloons.
The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Premiere has been announced as May 19, and this time around, the public is invited (for a price)!!!
WORLD PREMIERE CELEBRATION
FOR DISNEY'S THIRD "PIRATES" ADVENTURE --
"PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END"
-- TO RAISE $3 MILLION FOR THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION®
**********************************
STAR-STUDDED SWASHBUCKLING
DISNEYLAND PREMIERE ON MAY 19TH
IS THE HOTTEST EVENT OF THE YEAR;
PUBLIC CAN PURCHASE TICKETS FOR THE FIRST TIME
**********************************
[From Media Info at Disneyland News, April 13, 2007]: The Walt Disney
Company is helping to make wishes come true for children all over the world by
donating proceeds from the highly anticipated World Premiere of Walt Disney
Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's
End," to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and Make-A-Wish®
International, it was announced today by _Dick Cook, Chairman, The Walt Disney
Studios. The event will take place on May 19th at Disneyland® Park in Anaheim,
California, with all of the film's stars expected to participate. This gala
celebration for the third installment of the enormously popular
"Pirates" saga will raise $3 million for Make-A-Wish efforts, with
Disney providing an initial donation in excess of $1 million to the charities,
in addition to underwriting the entire cost of the Premiere (so that 100 percent
of the ticket income will benefit both Make-A-Wish organizations).
This is the first time that the public has been invited to participate in a "Pirates" Premiere. Individual tickets are priced at $1,500, and are now available for sale at www.piratespremiere.com. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and Make-A-Wish International are dedicated to granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in order to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, "Disney is dedicated to making dreams come true and we're extremely proud to be lending our support to the Make-A-Wish Foundation with this benefit World Premiere of 'Pirates' to make a difference. The Studio is extremely excited about the upcoming release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' and we're pulling out all the stops to give it the send-off it deserves with a magnificent gala event at Disneyland. Disney has been a longtime supporter of this wonderful organization and we're excited to be doing something special to bring smiles to the children and their families, giving them magical moments to share."
Over the past 25 years, Disney has continued to support the Make-A-Wish cause, contributing more than $10 million in cash and in-kind donations on an annual basis. With more than 6,000 wishes granted each year including visits to the Disney Parks, Disney Cruises, meeting Disney Characters and visiting TV and movie sets, including "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, Disney-themed wishes continue to be the most popular requests.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" picks up where the
record-breaking 2006 smash hit left off, with our heroes Will Turner (Orlando
Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) allied with Captain Barbossa
(Geoffrey Rush) in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)
from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones' locker. With the terrifying ghost
ship, The Flying Dutchman, and its commander Davy Jones under the control of the
East India Trading Company, there is havoc on the Seven Seas. Navigating through
treachery, betrayal and wild waters, the heroic trio must forge their way to
exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Now
headed beyond the very ends of the earth, each must ultimately choose a side in
a final titanic battle – as not only their lives and fortunes, but the entire
future of the freedom-loving Pirate way hangs in the balance. Produced by Jerry
Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay written by Ted
Elliott & Terry Rossio, our beloved cast sets sail again on a fresh new
adventure in May 2007. http://madeinatlantis.com/pirates3/world_premiere.htm
LADY WASHINGTON UPDATE
**********************
[From Capt. Les Bolton, April 13:] Thanks to you all for your calls, e-mails and
personal contacts! HB 1084 is now out of the Senate and awaiting the Governor’s
signature! Your efforts paid off at 1:50 pm Wednesday afternoon when Senator
Fairley introduced the Bill to the floor followed by Senators Hatfield (D) and
Honeyford (R) making statements in support of the Bill. Special thanks are also
due to Representative Brian Blake who introduced the Bill, the members of the
Coastal Caucus and the Heritage Caucus, in particular Senators Jacobsen, Fraser
and Honeyford who helped with the final push. I would be remiss if I didn’t
mention the support of the many teachers who e-mailed and called, Ray Gardner
and the Chinook Tribe, Clare & the Tall Ships 2008 teams in Tacoma and
Victoria and our shipmates at the Los Angeles Maritime Institute and at No
Quarter Given. Your support made this possible. THANK YOU ! ! I was pleased top
be in the gallery to watch this long process come to fruition. The icing on the
cake was when Lt. Governor Owen recognized me in the gallery, and I was able to
accept a round of applause from the Senate on behalf of our ship and our
shipmates. In the 18th-century it would definitely have been a “red stocking
day”. We are already making arrangements with the Secretary of State’s
Office to provide an excellent print of Lady Washington under full sail with her
Washington State flag flying! Thank you so much for your concentrated efforts to
bring this dream a reality. Already this effort has borne fruit. Watch for your
next issue of “Currents” for more details! Fair winds and following seas,
MID APRIL PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Looking for a bulk mailing permit
School supply donations needed for PyrateCon
Free Subs and Suds in Gulfport
Ultimate Pirates Fan Event
Reports
and
more ...
Avast ye, lads and lasses,
'Tis a long message this time. Lots of news to give to ya.
Many changes are happening here. We are setting up the No Quarter Given
Pyratemobile, -- portable office and home-- , in the guise of a 19 ft travel
trailer. Cap'n Michael has installed a computer and laser printer, so
we'll still be able to edit and publish on our next issue of No Quarter Given on
the road.
We should be able to get the next issue (January/February 2007) finished by
early May. However, there is one teensy little problem -- our bulk mailing
permit is only good at the post office here in Riverside and we are going to be
on the East Coast. So while we'll have no problems mailing out the First
Class subscriptions, we won't be able to send out the bulk mail subscriptions
until we return to California in mid-June. Unless.... we can locate someone who
has a bulk mailing permit somewhere in the Southeast U.S. (hopefully somewhere
near or between Atlanta, Jacksonville, Charleston, and Norfolk) who will let us
use their permit to send out the next issue of our magazine. If you are
such a person, or know such a person, send us an email: jamaica@noquarter.net
We've been adding more and more events to the "On the Horizon" webpage,
http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm
Keep an eye on that page frequently, to learn of new events that have been
added. Most notably is the 1st Annual Northern California Pirate Festival,
June 16-17. http://www.norcalpiratefestival.com/
Amongst the great entertainment lined up will be Skip Henderson and the
Starboard Watch (Skip’s “Two Hornpipes” is featured during the tavern
brawl in POTC 2), Jack Sparrow look-alike and magician Ace Miles, shanty singer
Tom Lewis, and much more. We'll be there, and hope to see many of you too.
Another new festival is the Pier Daze Pirate Festival in Long Beach, CA.
http://www.belmontpier.com
(click on Special Events). The pirate theme only holds through on
Saturday. Sunday will be a Sea Festival theme. Come out on Saturday to
party with the Port Royal Privateers encamped out on the pier. Pirates at
the beach!
We hope to see many of you at PyrateCon 2007 in just a week. It's not too
late to make plans to go -- http://www.pyratecon.com
They recently added more special celebrity guests, including Isaac Singleton (Barbossa's
Bosun) and the two lasses who slap Jack in Tortuga.
School supplies and musical instruments are being collected for a Katrina
ravaged school (N.P. Trist Middle School, 1 Pirate's Cove, Chalmette
Louisiana). A band of pirates will invade the school and present the
supplies during the morning of the first day of the conference. If you
will be at PyrateCon by earlier Friday, you can bring contributions to the
I ran across a pretty amazing article that I thought might be of interest. There
is a ship called the Sea Shepherd which has intervened in whaling hunts on the
high seas to protect whales. Under pressure from Japan, their registry has been
revoked and they are now operating under the status of pirates. They are flying
a jolly roger and the captain has declared that the only way they will be
stopped if if they are sunk.
WELL USED SWORD IS NEEDED
*************************
[From Capt. Tom:] Maybe you can help me, I need to find a well used sword,
late 16th, early 17th century, either rapier, or falchion [or a broadsword with
a swept hilt] with a well used belt, and I need it quickly. Know of any
for sale?
Right now we are prepping the John Smith Expedition for the Jamestown
400th. I'm fitting out the boat crew, but we need a sword for Capt. John
Smith, and I prefer to arm him with something well used.
If push comes to shove, I'll buy a new sword and belt and age them down.
Anyway, I need the sword in the next 2 weeks or a bit longer maybe, our first
program is April 26th, so the sooner, the better!
PLANS FOR A "PIRATE CITY" IN PANAMA
***********************************
http://www.port-sae.com/english/home.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Translation of a Spanish article:]
The current local economic “boom”, the US dollar
currency used, the beauty of its Caribbean Coast and the History, could make of
Panama, the headquarter of Port Sae “The Fort”, a tourist project dedicated
to the lovers of the piracy history, where its construction will required a 150
hectares of land and an $200 millions dollars investment.
The initiative is a result of the effort of Port Sae
Productions Stock Company & Panamersa Corporation, both registered in
Panama, and its purpose is to build a Fort City like the ones that used be in
the Caribbean during the XVI century and that where plundered by corsair and
pirates.
The project not only offers the possibility to establish
in its facilities, multiple companies that dedicates themselves to conserve the
piracy history, but also the construction of 650 accommodations in caves, a
hotel with 130 rooms and six buildings in skull form that will have companies
dedicated to the manufacture & commercialization of rum.
Also, it will have a museum dedicated to the Caribbean
piracy history where the visitors can experience it, and a 50 hectares Micro
Forest, dedicated to conserve and preserve the environment.
Jordi Gimenez, president of Port Sae Productions Stock
Company and the conceptual designer of this project, explains that the idea is
to offer the visitors the experience to go back in time and visit a XVI century
city where to appreciate the Caribbean piracy history.
He also said, that the project has been showed to
tourism authorities in Panama and other Caribbean countries, but they have not
decided where the project is going to be constructed, although Panama is a great
possibility.
On the other side, Michael Scott, president of Panamersa
Corporation, explained that in order to develop this project they will need a
$200 million dollars investment, that is why his company has already launch in
the north American market, stocks for $100 million dollars, to finance the
project.
Mr. Scott explained that the initiative will offer
approximately 1,000 permanent jobs and will add to the tourist development that
Panama has had, making it a great location for the project.
In fact, both businessmen agree that the current local
economy, the great tourist development that it has had, the US dollar as
currency used, the investment facilities, the multiple projects of tourism that
are in construction, will make of Panama a great location to build this
“pirate city”.
Jorge Porras, ex president of the Panamanian Chamber of
Tourism, said that the development of a thematic city inspired in piracy as Port
Sae “La Fortaleza” will have a positive impact on the tourist development of
Panama which can complement with this country attractiveness.
He also said that, it will be the first tourist project
of this kind in Central America and the Caribbean, which will also be as
reference even for tourist that visit other countries.
Jorge Loaiza, president of the Hotels Panamanian
Association, said that he is not completely aware of the content of the project,
but he agrees with Mr. Porras that it will have a positive impact on the tourist
development of Panama, that is why he is looking forward for this country to be
the headquarter for this project.
Meanwhile, Jaime Cornejo, Director of Development and
Investment of the Panamanian Institute of Tourism (IPAT), spanish initials, said
that to build this kind of project in Panama would be good for the country,
because it will be a tourist attraction for the visitors and also for the
resident of it.
Besides, Gloria De Leon, director of the National
Registry of Tourism, said that with the recent modification of their Law 8 that
opens the possibility for thematic parks to receive the same incentives that are
granted for another tourist investments, but in order to receive this privilege,
the project must be register at the IPAT before December 31, 2008 if this will
be develop in an area designated as for tourism.

ST. PATTY'S DAY MELEE
AT 29 PALMS
**********************
We've told you in a past email about "There Be Pirates" performing
Irish
session music and pirate favorites at the St. Patty's Day Melee in
Twenty-nine Palms, CA. There was also in ad for it in the Sept. 2006
issue of NQG. It was brought to our attention that the ad did not
contain a time for the start of the party.
Party starts at 6 pm. Come in pirate garb for maximum fun! No cover
charge.
Here are directions to those of you who are venturing out.
Take your favorite route towards 29 Palms. If you are coming from Los
Angeles, Orange County, Riverside or vicinties west of there, you will
probably be heading east out on the I 10. If so, take the Hwy 62 exit
from the I 10, heading north.
When you get into 29 Palms (about 20 minutes from the I 10), look for
Adobe Rd. That's a main intersection with a signal. Stay on Hwy. 62,
and go past Adobe Rd. for two more blocks, then turn right on National
Park Blvd. Go about 2 blocks, to the 29 Palms Inn Driveway. Park on
the left. The party is in the tent.

LOS ANGELES AND SAN FRANCISCO PIRATE FANS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rather than going through the website above, if you want to go to a theater in
the Los Angeles area, email me and I can send you a PDF file of a pass along
with details where the screening is (you need to print out the pass to bring for
admittance, and still need to call a number to register).
If you are in the SF Bay area, email me and I can give you another phone number
to call.
I think these two "in" connections will give you a better edge
than the "contest" website above.
SKULL TOASTER
*************
This website is in German, but it's a cool toaster. Beware -- it's
probably in European electrical format. I couldn't figure out if you could
order it in USA electrical format.
http://www.tomwet.de/shop/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=620
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A rough translation of the German is:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Death's Head Toaster SKULL-Toast
Not for weak nerves. Those who love crude things or who is a pirate
wholeheartedly should not pass up the Skull Toaster. In noble black, it
makes a noticeably good figure on the breakfast table. The resulting
toast should not be undervalued.
We recommend: Only serve this toast to good friends or acquaintances.
Ahoy Mateys!
Pirates Of The Great Salt Lake is going to break the
record for the most producers ever credited on a film. and at the same time make
sure that this gem of an independent film makes it onto the big screen world
wide. This film is awesome and has been getting rave reviews by audiences
and press alike,at independent Film Festivals throughout the US. I was lucky
enough to be the Hatmaker for the film and it is great to be connected to it.
Now every fan, pirate, enthusiast, re-enactor... anyone
and every one can become a producer and be part of Pirate Film History. Go
to www.freethepirates.com
and check it out. You can become a producer for as little as $5.00. And there is
plenty of Swag for those who have the doubloons to donate more. Also The
geographic areas with the most support will be the first Cities to see
this Movie released at a local theater. Lets make sure that Pirates Of the
Great Salt Lake opens in Portland. Thanks for your help, spread the word!
LIVE BY THE SWORD - DIE BY THE SWORD
************************************
Several sword related items came to our attention lately.
Apparently there is a move to ban swords in the UK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First this petition came to our attention:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/swords/
The wording of this petition is as follows:
The proposed ban on the import, sale and manufacture of swords will have an
adverse effect on legitimate practitioners, collectors and manufacturers. Actual
sword related crime is very rare and does not warrant a ban that affects the
cultural activities of thousands of legitimate martial artists, collectors and
smiths. Current legislation is quite adequate to deal with violent crime
connected with bladed weapons. New legislation is merely for show. Enforcing
such a ban will also affect cultural events such as Scottish Sword Dancing and
many Sikh festivals. We urge the PM to reconsider this knee jerk reaction to
media influenced scaremongering.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trying to find the actual proposed ban, I could only find this article:
http://www.fightmag.co.uk/editorial_columns.htm
It only seems to address certain samurai swords, not all swords
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nevertheless, shortly after, on the same day I received noticed of this news
item:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/02/ap/strange/mainD8NK5R202.shtml
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A man toting a 3-foot sword apparently met his
match when he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment: The woman's roommate
grabbed a sword of his own and sliced the intruder, police said. The roommate, a
sword collector, fended off the ex-boyfriend, who was cut on the arm, police
said. Elvis Javier Polanco, 18, was treated at a hospital and charged with
burglary and aggravated assault, Beaufort County sheriff's Capt. Toby McSwain
said. He said Polanco broke a window and climbed on his friend's shoulders to
get into the apartment. The roommate, Louis Delgado Hernandez, disarmed the
intruder while the woman called police, McSwain said.

Later that same day I ran across this item:

Feb 21, 4:43 PM EST
Porn DVD Screams Prompt Sword 'Rescue'
OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (AP) -- A man says he broke into an
apartment with a cavalry sword because he thought he heard a woman being raped,
but the sound actually was from a pornographic movie his upstairs neighbor was
watching.
"Now I feel stupid," said James Van Iveren,
who has been charged in the case. "This really is nothing, nothing but a
mistake."
According to a criminal complaint, the neighbor told
police that Van Iveren pounded on the door and kicked it open without warning
Feb. 12, damaging the frame and lock.
"Where is she?" Van Iveren demanded, thrusting
the sword at the
neighbor, the complaint said. "Where is she?"
The neighbor told police Van Iveren became increasingly
aggressive as he repeated the question, insisting that he had heard a woman
being raped. The complaint said that, with the sword pointed at him, the
neighbor led Van Iveren throughout the apartment, opening closet doors to prove
he was alone.
The neighbor later played for police the part of the DVD
he believed Van Iveren heard downstairs.
Van Iveren, 39, of Oconomowoc, was charged with criminal
trespass, criminal damage and disorderly conduct, all while using a dangerous
weapon, and is due in court March 5. Together, the misdemeanor counts carry a
maximum sentence of 33 months in jail.
Van Iveren said Tuesday that he heard a woman
"screaming for help," grabbed the sword, bounded up the stairs, kicked
in the apartment door and confronted the man who lived there.
"I intended to hold it behind my back and knock.
But I froze and
instead, what happened happened," he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Contesting his neighbor's account, Van Iveren said he
didn't look anywhere in the apartment except the front room, and that he never
threatened the neighbor with the sword.
"I had the sword extended. But that was all,"
he said.
Van Iveren, who lives with his mother in the downstairs
apartment, said he did not call police when he heard the noises because he does
not have a telephone. He said he barely knew the upstairs tenant.
Police seized Van Iveren's sword, which he said was a
family heirloom.

Bethlehem man killed with sword
BETHLEHEM, Pa. Police say a Bethlehem man used a sword
to kill another man Friday night in the city's first homicide in more than a
year. Forty-eight-year-old Sonny Thomas was arraigned on charges of criminal
homicide, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
The victim was identified as 19-year-old Carlos Garcia,
a neighbor of Thomas's.
The coroner says Garcia died of multiple stab wounds
from a Samurai-type sword.
Police expect to release more information on Monday.

Amateur production of a prequel to the Jack Sparrow story. Cute, funny,
amateurish, but I found it fun to watch. I really laughed at the raft scene.

ST. PADDY'S DAY MELEE
*********************
March 17, 2007, starting at 6pm
Twentynine Palms, CA
Join There Be Pirates! & some very special guests at Shanghai Brown's 4th annual St. Paddy's Day Melee, 6 p.m., St. Patrick's Day, Saturday, March 17, under the tent at the legendary 29 Palms Inn, 73950 Inn Avenue, 29 Palms, California. Plenty of room for dancing and fun. No cover charge! Featuring traditional Irish session music, Irish drinking songs, songs of the sea, pirate ditties, Irish poetry, toasts, jokes and much more merriment!
There will be a Pyrate Bazaar as well, with piratical and St. Paddy’s goods for sale (No Quarter Given will be there). There will also be an official photographers booth -- taking pictures of pirates, or people posing with pirates.
Dress like a pirate, dance like a pirate, and take home a little booty!
For dinner/lodging reservations at the 29 Palms Inn, or directions: (760)367-3505.
There Be Pirates!, Southern California's leading pirate jam band, will be heading the bill on St. Patrick's Day, with special guests joining in the evening's fun. There will be traditional Irish session music, with John Whytock on guitar, Francis Gaskins on fiddle, and Shanghai Brown on bodhran, New York Irish selections by Really Shooo, solo Irish songs, toasts, and poetry by Shanghai Brown, and musical and dancing guests, along with Irish drinking songs, sea music, and pirate ditties by There Be Pirates!
The band is currently in Downwind Studios in Desert Hot Springs, working on their album, "Drink & the Devil."
The party is free, but donations will be accepted for the Hi-Desert Playhouse, the venue where the party was originally scheduled to be held. A January freeze burst the pipes in the theatre's fire sprinkler system, leaving the Joshua Tree venue requiring well over a quarter million dollars in repairs. The theatre is raising $100,000 to cover the repairs and necessary improvements not covered by insurance.
"We're seeing about rigging up a plank over the pool, and having it available to walk for a donation," Shanghai Brown said, picking his teeth with his dagger. "Or, perhaps, we'll make you walk it if you don't make a donation? That'd be rather piratical of us, wouldn't it?
"What we guarantee, is that this will be an incredibly fun evening in
the Saint's honor," he continued. "There will be singing, dancing,
fiddling, poetry, toasts, history, a bit of melancholy and sentiment - it
wouldn't be Irish otherwise - rebellion, camaraderie and laughter. A magical
night to remember, indeed - one the poets will be writing about in the years to
come. It'll cost you nothing but your time and perhaps a pint or two. This isn't
one of those sad strip mall Irish wannabe pub parties you might find elsewhere,
with dyed green American beer and everyone trying way too hard to connect with
their Irish ancestry, such as it is. No, this is the real thing. Why I won't be
surprised if I see the wee people dancing round the palm trees under the waning
moon, and faeries getting eaten by the owls.
"And remember - dress like a pirate, dance like a pirate, and take home a
little booty!

PIRATE CROSSWORD
****************
[From Lisa Jensen:] Just thought you'd like to know that the Merl Reagle Sunday
crossword puzzle in today's SF Chronicle Magazine [Feb. 18] is all about
pirates. Mostly piratical clues & answers, as well as a "treasure
hunt:" words describing various types of pirate treasure are hidden
diagonally in the finished puzzle, so even after all the squares are filled in,
the game is still afoot!
Reagle self-syndicates his Sunday puzzles, and you don't always get the same
puzzle in different regions. (I noticed his puzzle in the Sunday LA Times, for
instance, is either a week ahead or a week behind the SF puzzle.) But it might
be fun for your readers to be on the lookout for this one. This puzzle is called
Seek Your Booty. Reagle's website is

Comments about ocean life by school children:
1. This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight testicles.
(Kelly age 6)
2. Some fish are dangerous. Jellyfish can sting. Electric eels can give you a
shock. They have to live in caves under the sea because I think they have to
plug themselves in to chargers.
(Christopher age 7)
3. Oysters' balls are called pearls.
(James age 6)
4. If you are surrounded by sea you are an Island. If you don't have sea all
around you, you are incontinent.

5. I think sharks are ugly and mean, and have big teeth, just like Emily
Richardson. She's not my friend no more.
(Kyle age 6)
6. A dolphin breathes through an asshole on the top of its head.
(Billy age 8)
7. When ships had sails, they used to use the trade winds to cross the ocean.
Sometimes, when the wind didn't blow the sailors would whistle to make the wind
come. My brother said they would be better off eating beans.

mermaids get pregnant?

MID FEBRUARY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
L.O.R.E. workshops
Farewell to a sailor (Wake Feb. 10)
Grounding of Royaliste (update)
PyrateCon
2007
and more ...
Greetings, lads and lasses,
Since my announcement to take up piracy full time, many of you have
written to congratulate me on having made the "right" decision. It's
heartening to have the backing of so many of you. My teaching job ended Jan. 26.
Now that I have time, we are working hard to get No Quarter Given back onto our
publishing schedule. The September/October 2006 issue is now done, and should be
mailed off on Monday. We are slowly getting caught up - we are now only five
months behind instead of six. The November/December 2006 issue is half-way done
and should be out in less than a month.
We'll also have time to get out some other projects (such as Collected Vol. 2003, 2004 & 2005, a new edition of the Pyrate Prymer, and a few surprises). And you'll start seeing us getting out and about a lot more.
Starting in April, we'll head east to New Orleans, to be speakers at PyrateCon 2007 along with the Talk Like a Pirate Day crew, special effects artist Ken Niederbaumer, Cindy Vallar, and others. This new event is shaping up to be something quite exciting. See announcement below for more info.
From New Orleans, we'll set course for Sail Jacksonville (FL) in early May (rumors are there will be a pirate battle there). We'll follow the ships north to Charleston Tall Ships, where pirates will also be gathering. In early June we'll rendezvous with many of you at the Hampton Blackbeard Festival, followed up by the grandest tallship gathering of the year at Sail Virginia (commemorating the 400th anniversary of Jamestown). [See our website for event details: http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm ]
PIRATE WORKSHOPS AT L.O.R.E.
****************************
Before we sail East, we are again heading up the pirate workshop classes at
L.O.R.E. on March 3rd and 4th in Corona, CA. Mark it on your calendar now. I was
just asked about a week ago to do this, so plans are formulating now, and I'll
let you know in a few days what classes will be presented. If any of you are
interested in leading a class, or if you would like to request a particular
subject be taught, let me know. We are also looking for "rogues" to
meet at the tavern (people willing to take on a historical character to meet up
with others at the tavern -- it requires a little research which I can help you
with, a little improvisational ability, and a lot of chutzpah). This event has
been quite entertaining and has been the highlight of the weekend. If you are
interested and willing, but have no idea who you'd like to portray, I can help

UPDATE ON THE ROYALISTE
***********************
[From Claire Britton-Warren:] It was a few days after the Royaliste was grounded
before they were they able to get Royaliste righted, and floated to a safe
boatyard. Until then, brazen looters were scavenging on her even in broad
daylight! They were chasing groups of them off that were trying to board her!
The looters got all of her fancy fenders, some of the nicer sheets and an
unknown amount of stuff from inside. In addition to the damage from the looters,
someone was taking pot shots at her. Bullet holes were found in the hull! Some
of the items aboard were washed downstream as well and it’s uncertain what may
be simply missing or stolen. Luckily all of the antique swords were recovered
safely and none of the cannons were taken.
She’s had some damage, one of her taff rails (railings with
fancy turned spindles) are gone, the mizzen boom (boom at the foot of the back
sail) snapped and she’s taking on a bit of water, but that’s certainly to be
expected with all the shifting she’s been through. Her bilge pumps were
working fine so as she took on water, she was able to pump it out.
One week following the grounding, after flushing it several
times the engine started! That was very good news because it meant they can
motor the 40 miles they have to go to haul out rather than being towed. The
local haul out places won’t haul out wooden boats.
Gary and Kathy Bergman, the owners/captains lived aboard
full-time and have lost nearly everything that was aboard. Gary and Kathy are
faced with the tremendous financial burden. In addition to the initial recovery
of the ship, they will be faced with haul-out costs, repair and replacement
costs not to mention the costs of hotel rooms, clothing and personal care items.
The Royaliste operates as a non-profit and she desperately
needs the assistance of everyone who can make a donation to help with her
recovery. Donations can be made through the Privateer Inc website support page.

The year is 1859. The United States is on the verge of civil war … a nation
torn apart over the issue of slavery. 4000 miles from the explosive events of
American politics, the USS Constellation is at sea off the coast of Africa. Her
mission is to interdict ships smuggling Africans into slavery. The brutal
practice of stealing Africans from their homeland and importing them into
slavery has been illegal in the United States for 50 years, and was considered
an act of piracy. Yet there is still a booming market for enslaved Africans. The
illegal, African slave trade must be stopped. The job falls to the US Navy and a
small fleet of ships assigned to the task called the African Squadron.
Constellation is the flagship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shot in High Definition and filmed on location in England, the two-hour History
Channel/Indigo Films special USS Constellation: Battling for Freedom recreates
the horror of the slave trade, the challenging mission of the African Squadron,
and Constellation's effort to intercept slave smugglers.
LATE JANUARY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Farewell to a sailor
Grounding of Royaliste
Corsairs return to the stage
Sad greetings, lads and lasses,
Friday past was a Black Friday indeed for our Brethren. First, we heard news of the loss of a fellow pirate, crusty sailor, and friend, Crack err Jac (aka Jack Gross. He was found earlier that morning in his home, apparently having passed away from medical problems. Jack was very active at the various Southern California pirate and tallship events, as well as was a volunteer with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, so many of you might have run across him. He also made it out to the Pirates in Paradise festival in Key West a couple of years ago. The Port Royal Privateers (of whom Jack was a member) had a gathering last night, and raised many a toast to Jack's memory.
A tribute website to Jack has been set up at: http://www.libertesparrow.com/Pirate's%20Sunset.htm If you have photos of Jack you'd like to share and have be posted at the tribute website, Liberté invites you to send them to her at: libertesparrow@socal.rr.com
Next on that same day, we heard news the pirate vessel "Royaliste" had run aground and was in dire trouble. See below for details, and how to lend yer help.
We do end this missive on a good note - bringing you news of the Corsairs returning to the stage Feb. 10, after a year's absence from performing. See below for more info.
ROYALIST AGROUND -- HELP IS NEEDED
**********************************
[From Claire Warren, Royaliste crewmember]: It is with great sorrow
that we send news that the tall ship Royaliste (a historic gaff-rigged
ketch) has gone aground. She was making an inland waterway voyage from Georgia
to her new home with a maritime museum in North Carolina when the accident
occurred. They were preparing to dock for the night in Little River South
Carolina, at a harbor they had visited before without difficulty. The charts
indicated that the harbor had a 10' depth at low tide, so there should have been
plenty of clearance for Royaliste's 6'-6" draft. Unbeknownst to the
crew, the conditions underwater had changed dramatically in the harbor. As they
made their approach, the depth dropped suddenly, from 14' to 4' and despite the
best efforts of everyone aboard, they went aground in the soft sediment on the
bottom. Initial attempts to free her failed, and as the tide began to recede,
the crew kept her balanced upright on her keel with their own body weight. A
vessel came to their aid, hoping to free them, but as a member of the vessel's
crew stepped aboard, the weight of that single footstep offset her precarious
balance and she fell over on her starboard side, with all crew aboard. The
situation quickly went from bad to worse. Water flooded the interior of the
Royaliste, submerging (and consequently damaging) her engines, electrical system
and all of the personal possessions of the crew aboard. The crew all escaped
safely, including the ship's two parrots and a dog, all of whom were rescued by
vessel assist, as they perched on the port side of the ship watching the rising
tide, with only the clothes they were wearing and one or two personal items that
they were able to reach. At the time of this writing, she is still aground and
the captain and crew are still working to free her. Gary and Kathy Bergman, the
owners/captains lived aboard full-time and have lost nearly everything that was
aboard. Insurance coverage on a vessel of this type only covers liability, so as
I understand it, absolutely none of this is to be covered by the ship's
insurance. Gary and Kathy are faced with the tremendous financial burden. In
addition to the initial recovery of the ship, they will be faced with haul-out
costs, repair and replacement costs not to mention the costs of hotel rooms,
clothing and personal care items. The Royaliste operates as a non-profit
and she desperately needs the assistance of everyone who can make a donation to
help with her recovery. No donation would be too small or too large and every
donation is greatly appreciated. Please spread the word of her difficulties to
anyone who can help. Donations can be made through the Privateer Inc website
support page. The PayPal link is up and can be accessed here: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
News of the Royaliste is being kept up to date on the Tales of the Seven Seas
website forum. My husband Bob was serving aboard as crew when she went aground
and has the only surviving cell phone. He is keeping me updated with information
and I'm posting it immediately on the website as it comes in. Up to the minute
information can be viewed here: http://talesofthesevenseas.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=9911
Royaliste has long served the pirate community. Gary and Kathy have been
extraordinarily generous with Royaliste for many years. They have made her
easily accessible to anyone that expressed a desire to learn the art of sailing
a tall ship. Now this beautiful ship needs our help. Please spread the word and
share this information with anyone and everyone who can help her. Sincerely,
Claire Warren aka Poison Quill Royaliste's San Francisco crew Quartermaster,
"Captain James carried off a Spanish prize full of logwood, being astonished upon reaching port at the high price his cargo fetched;" having "known so little of its real value that he had burned much of it for fuel on the voyage." --According to legend, William James was the privateer who "discovered" the commercial value of logwood for the Brethren of the Coast, thus beginning the influx of the buccaneers into the Yucatan and Bay of Honduras, in search of the prized timber.
*Episode 71: Pirate
Special*
/Arggghhh, me hearties!/ Jamie and Adam plundered the seven seas in search of
pirate parables and maritime myths. The result? This 2-hour spectacular episode!
And, with four stories of hijinks on the high seas the action is thick and fast.
Playing with more firearms, the guys try to figure out how deadly cannonballs
really are versus the splinters sprayed from a mighty broadside blast. Kari,
Grant and Tory on the port side decode the mysteries of the ol' pirate eye
patch: why would a pirate wear a patch over a perfectly good eye? And if that
isn't enough, the gang tops of the show with rum, knives and sails ... /whaat?/
This one's for the books!
We got this message from Don:
[From Don Maitz:] Thank you for publishing Joe's Article in NQG. Unfortunately ,
it is on the near edge of too late, as 2007 calendars are being phased out of
EARLY JANUARY PIRATE UPDATE
Pirates Mutiny Final Show tonight
Shakespeare and the Pirates
Show at Pirates 'n' Plunder
Pirates in the Media
News of events and festivals
and much more ....
A hearty New Years Greetings to you,
We have made a new decision for the New Year -- one I'm very excited about. I know a lot of our subscriber crew have been writing to ask about what's happened to No Quarter Given, and when the next issue will be arriving. Our apologies to you for having gotten so far behind in our schedule. It's due to my having taken up new employment as a teacher. Over the last 1 1/2 years, I've tried to keep up with NQG in between preparing my lesson plans and gradin' papers. I've since found out I simply don't have enough time for piracy and educatin'. NQG kept getting farther and farther behind, and I've been missing out on too many opportunities and grand adventures. Something just had to give. Decidin' that I'll be much happier following the paths of piracy, I've sent in my resignation, and after the end of the semester in January, will be devotin' much more of my efforts to NQG. We should be able to catch back up with our printing schedule soon, and I'll have more time for makin' appearances at events and festivals. Look for us in April, in New Orleans at PyrateCon 2007 ( www.pyratecon.com ), as well as many other events. We're hoping to make an East Coast run this Spring to catch several of the Atlantic tall ship and pirate events. We'll let you know more as plans progress.
The July/Aug 2006 issue of NQG was been mailed out
yesterday, so keep a weather eye out fer it. Over the Winter Break, I also got
most of the Sept/Oct. 2006 issue done, so we hope to get this one out in another
couple of weeks.
FINAL SHOW TONIGHT
7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Pirate Tech.
Bold, cunning, and audacious, pirates are a breed of fighting men and women who
have terrorized the high seas since before recorded history. At the height of
their power in the 1700s they literally influenced the fate of nations when they
became embroiled in the rivalry between England and Spain. This special will
visit maritime museums and shipwreck sites, utilize
walk-and-talk demonstrations of fire arms, swords, and navigation instruments to
help spotlight the innovations pirates brought to maritime technology. Includes
a look at how many pirates modified their ships to make them faster and more
powerful.
Maybe this is old news as it was released in July, but I hadn't seen it
anywhere.
Completely preposterious fantasy script- Gardiner's Island is supposedly in the
Carribbean, and Maynard is press ganged and sails with Teach, no blockade of
Charleston Harbor. Why did they even call this guy Blackbeard? A made up pirate
would have been okay- but still there are nice shots of the Lady Washington and
the Schooner Lynx to make yar blood race- even if both ships seem to have
miraculaously sprouted gun decks!
"Deal" Takes Top Spot Over "Pirates" On Christmas Day
December 27, 2006 10:49 a.m. EST
Maira Oliveira - All Headline News Reporter
Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - It was a done deal for NBC's "Deal Or No Deal"
when it won top ratings during Christmas weekend.
According to data from the Nielsen Media Research, the television hit show
scored more viewers than a broadcast repeat of "Pirates Of The Caribbean:
Curse Of The Black Pearl," which came in second. "Pirates," which
aired on the ABC network on Saturday night, averaged 8.6 million viewers while
new episodes of the "Deal" scored 14.9 million viewers during its
primetime spot.
PYRATE MYTHBUSTERS
[Stormfeather also writes: ] I didn't include this one as I couldn't find the
actual broadcast dates, but MythBusters Discovery Channel is doing a
"pirate Myth Buster" segment airing after 1/10 (according to
commercials they are airing). It was mentioned on the Pyracy forum too. Keep a
weather eye out....
TELL THE CORSAIRS WHAT TO SING
*********************************
[From Will Teach of the Corsairs:]
Are you one of those people who have been telling us we should do a live album?
Are you one of those people who wants to decide what songs should be on it?
Go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=406932961527
and tell us what to sing.
Much rum and swag to all,
--Jamaica Rose
(Christine Lampe, editor of No Quarter Given)
"As to hanging, she thought it no great
Hardship, for, were it not for that, every cowardly fellow would turn Pyrate,
and so infest the Seas that Men of Courage would starve:--that if it was put to
the Choice of the Pyrates, they would not have the Punishment less than death,
the Fear of which kept some dastardly Rogues honest; that many of those who are
now cheating Widows and Orphans and oppressing their poor Neighbors who have no
Money to obtain Justice, would then rob at Sea, and the Ocean would be crowded
with Rogues, like the Land, and no Merchant would venture out; and the Trade, in
a little time, would not be worth following"
--Mary Read, as reported by "Captain Charles Johnson"
