We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas. These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine. If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us. Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month. Below are some past email notices. Be aware, some links and information on older messages could be obsolete.

POST WINTER SOLSTICE PIRATE UPDATE
*********************************************
Repeat Airing of True Caribbean
Pirates
*********************************
Ahoy me lads and lasses,
For those few of you who've not yet seen yours truly and Captain Michael Macleod
in "True Caribbean Pirates", it airs again tonight on History Channel
at 8pm and midnight (Eastern and Pacific). Despite our participation in
this production, it is a rather good documentary, and we highly recommend it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
True Caribbean Pirates:
Blackbeard. Ann Bonny. Henry Jennings. Calico Jack. Henry Morgan. Black Bart
Roberts. During the mid to late 17th and early 18th centuries, they were feared
criminals. The Caribbean was their domain, the parade of treasure and cargo to
Europe their target. The origins of Caribbean piracy began when Columbus made
landfall in the Bahamas. Two years later, the Pope granted Spain the exclusive
right to the Caribbean and most of the New World. The Spanish reaped an immense
fortune in gold and silver, but with a price. England, France, and Holland all
desired a portion of this wealth and each established Caribbean bases and used
privateers--private sailors fighting for profit--to protect their interests and
steal Spanish treasure. The line between privateering and piracy became blurred.
We'll examine this Golden Age of Piracy and the true stories of the infamous
pirates, how they operated, and their successes and failures in this dark and
deadly profession.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A thank you to all who've sent us their good wishes and holiday greetings.
I was working through yesterday in stealthy guise as a meek biology teacher to
high schoolers, so only now have time to really start getting ready for the
Holidays. I will be working hard over the next two weeks to get the next
issue of No Quarter Given out to you.
I've been adding a lot of new and updated events to the No Quarter Given
"On the Horizon" calendar listing, http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm
so keep checking back frequently to see what new events have been listed.
Some recent additions are a Pirates Weekend for the Arizona Renaissance Faire
(Feb), the PyrateCon 2007 in New Orleans (April), the Virginia Sail 2007 (June)
and a new date for the Cutthroats of Corona (April).
Not enough time to write much and to get this message possibly in time for you
to see the documentary, so let me just wish you all a Grand Holiday time and
loads of good plundering in the New Year.
Much rum and swag to all,
--Jamaica Rose

AUTHOR JAMES L. NELSON
ON HISTORY CHANNEL
*************************
This Saturday night (Dec. 2, 8 pm ET), The History Channel is airing a
documentary about the building of the sailing ship Godspeed, on which nautical
fiction and history author James L. Nelson worked as a rigger last Spring. In
this documentary, Nelson explains the task of rigging a sailing ship. Nelson was
chosen for this on-air task for his knowledge of the subject, his ease and
ability in explaining complicated topics, and the fact that none of the other
riggers wanted to do it. Tune in for this fascinating documentary!*

NEWS OF THE H.M.S. SURPRISE
****************************
[From Capt. Tucker]
AHOY ALOFT & ALOW!
Some time ago I received some scuttlebutt from the general direction of the
Purser's mates that Capt. Lucky Jack {Mr. Crowe} had paid a courtesy call to his
former command berthed in San Diego harbour {formerly the property of the Dons,
now American} and while standing upon his former quarterdeck made the
announcement that he would personally do a sequel to his successful voyage into
Hollywood waters.
The scuttlebutt in question was reported in a very respectable journal devoted
to an authentic representation of the lives of honest seamen, but alas this
story has turned out to be grog watered down with some bilge water!
Conversing with a shipmate over at the San Diego Maritime Museum this morning I
discovered that he was the one who visited with Lucky jack that day, and I was
told that the qauestion of a sequel was brought up, and to this Capt Aubrey said
that he was not sure if this would happen. Its still being kicked about up at
20th Century Fox, but we will see.
In the mean time I received the good word that the ship is being made seaworthy
again and will be going upon regular cruises starting this Nov. 11.
{Oh to be there for this!}
I do hope that this will clear up any rumours that are unfounded, and enlighten
all to the fact that the HMS Surprise will soon be under sail again!
Your Servant,
HEALTH & LIMBS,
Capt. Tucker, R.N.

Ahoy me lads and lasses,
We have a shipload of news to give you tonight. And there is a shipload of pirate events coming up in the next month or two. Keep checking the No Quarter Given "On the Horizon" event page (
http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm
) as we seem to be updating this page with new events, and more details for already posted events almost every day.
Look for the No Quarter Given booth at the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival (Sept. 9 and 10 in Dana Point, CA) and the Gold Coast Pirate Festival (Sept. 23-24, Lake Casitas State Park, Ojai, CA), and the Pirate Party at Hogue Barmichaels, (Sept. 16, Newport Beach, CA). Come see our dozens of new pirate pins, many of them based on "POTC: Dead Man's Chest".
All this recent pirate hoopla has kept us busy (interviews, appearances, events, tons of orders for NQG swag), and slowed us down on producing the No Quarter Given magazine. I have been working simultaneously on the May/June issue and the July/August issue (sort of like some recent movies). The May/June issue should go out sometime next week with the July/August issue following about two weeks later. We are striving hard to get back on schedule.

Wench Swap – Pirates Capture ABC!
[From John Baur]
We are almost completely recovered now from our reality TV experience and have been given permission by the network to tell you about the show.
We did an episode of ABC's "Wife Swap," which of course we call "Wench Swap." We are told the episode will be the first of the season – airing Sept. 18, just in time for everyone's favorite holiday, International Talk Like a Pirate Day! How perfect is that?
My wife, Mad Sally, went south to the very orderly, organized and beige home of a very orderly and organized (not to say lifeless, dull, and non-piratical) family, while that family's plastic wife/mother came north to the chaotic, messy, unorganized pirate home of the saucy, salty Baurs. Hilarity, as the saying goes, ensues.
We stood up for pirates everywhere, and there will be moments when pirate fans cheer, others when they seethe with anger! Maybe even brush away a tear? Or say, "What the hell was THAT all about?" So watch "Wife Swap" Monday, Sept. 18, 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, 7 p.m. Central and Rocky Mountain. Then drop us a message in a bottle and tell us what ye think.
And get more info on the show at: http://abc.go.com/primetime/wifeswap/index.html
[Ed. Note: And keep an eye out for Don Maitz artwork to be prominently placed during the show]
... AND SPEAKING OF DON MAITZ
*******************************
The new Don Maitz 2007 Pirates calendar is available now from Amazon.com (and probably other calendar sources). The 2006 calendar sold well enough last year, they are doing it again for 2007, with all new artwork. Don says he has enough pirate art to also do a 2008 calendar with all new art (maybe having to get a few new ones finished up quick) -- so keep buying those calendars so we can see the 2008 come to print as well.

Don also has a new print on canvas available from Qoro: http://www.qoro.com
It's called "Pirate Banking". Go to the above website, and on the right side, go the the Artists listing, and look for Don Maitz's name. You'll see his three available prints from Qoro.

It was 2,000 years ago when Judea's King Herod--one of the cruelest, most ambitious rulers in history--built a city of white marble, and alongside it the world's first large-scale artificial harbor.

THE BLACK PEARL AT L.A. HARBOUR
**********************************
Ahoy mates! Fyne weather and fair winds indeed yesterday as we enjoyed a last minute quick round-about sail, spyin' the Pirate ship Black Pearl that were berth'd in San Pedro Bay, Los Angeles Harbour. As the crew servin' for L.A. Maritime Institute, Cappy, quite aptly put it "she's lookin' ugly!".
It started out as a joke with a few folks bein' told to show up at berth 77 Spirit cruises about 6pm Wednesday (yesterday) fer a quick peak at the Pearl. We were only allowed within 300 feet of the Tallship it were advised. We were also told we could take all the pictures we wanted. Well, blow me down! More than a one hundred souls showed up, children too! The theme music from Pirates of the Carribean then came on for the entire visitor ship to enjoy. Ah glorious! Now, let me advise ye, the Pearl was truely "ugly" with her blackened grey sails droopin' down slightly, the fore and aft lookin' quite remarkably as she did for POTC1. In fact she appeared better for the wear, with a small American flag topside!The smiles on the faces of me mates and those on board made this unplanned small adventure into the world of Pirates a little slice of heaven.

PIRATES OF THE BURNING SEA

Arrr, for those o' you who will be playin' Pirates of the Burnin' Sea massively multiplayer online game
(MMORPG), please consider joinin' our Guild called "The Macabre". The Macabre is a community that pro'ides its members with an unique gamin' experience. All members o' the Macabre hold the rank o' "Captain". Too often guild titles or ranks can gi'e a false sense o' supremacy lea'in' others feelin' inadequate while under the rule o' an iron fist. The Macabre structure was designed for organization as opposed t' domination. Though solo play is encouraged,
scalawags play has been optimized with squadrons and fleets. The concept o' squadrons and fleets allows each member o' the Macabre t' ser'e a 'ital role and contribute t' the guild as a whole.
The mission o' the Macabre is not a delusion t' “conquer all”, after all - we be pirates, but t' act as a thorn in the side o' those who whish t' conduct trade within Pirates o' the Burnin' Sea. is how the members o' the Macabre perform which will determine the reputation o' the guild and their respecti'e fleet. Through organization and a strong presence within the game, claims o' "domination", "fear" and "power" will precede the Macabre, howe'er it will not be achie'ed through bein' intolerable t' the gamin' community.
Aye, me parrot concurs. Hope to see you on board soon Matey!

DISPUTE OVER QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE
**************************************
Is Blackbeard's secret set to surface?
The Scottsman, Scottish news direct from Scotland
By RICHARD LUSCOMBE
August 14, 2006
MIAMI — He was one of the most ruthless maritime marauders of his age and his name spread fear across the high seas.
Now the latest recovery from a wreck off the east coast of the United States could shed more light on the 18th-century legend, Blackbeard the pirate.
Marine archaeologists are raising two giant cannons from the scattered remains of what they believe is the Queen Anne's Revenge, the notorious swashbuckler's giant flagship that sank in 1718 after a skirmish with the Royal Navy.
They hope it will force critics of the nine-year-old recovery project, including two university professors who last month published a paper disputing the authenticity of the wreck, to eat their words.
"We knew it the first day and we still have absolutely no doubt that she's the Queen Anne's Revenge," said Phil Masters, the director of the Florida company that has been exploring the site two miles off North Carolina.
More than 16,000 artefacts, including pewter tankards and plates, cannonballs and a ship's bell, have been raised and put on display since excavations began. The haul includes at least 23 other cannons, but the team believes the latest find may be the most significant.
Chris Southerly, the project dive-master, said the first 6ft cannon, which was raised on Tuesday, weighed about 800lb, supporting the team's theory that Queen Anne's Revenge was one of the most heavily armed vessels afloat.
A dispute continues, however, over whether the artefacts are really from the ship that belonged to Blackbeard, a British privateer turned outlaw named Edward Teach, or Thatch, who terrorised Atlantic and Caribbean waters in the early 18th century.
"It's an exciting shipwreck and an important shipwreck; it just may not be the one everyone hopes it is," Wayne Lusardi, a researcher who previously worked on the project, said.
He and two East Carolina University professors published an article in the April edition of the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology claiming that the ship might be an 18th- century Spanish merchant vessel. "The closer you look, the less certain the identification seems to be," they wrote.
The recovery effort has cost nearly $1 million (£550,000) so far and Mr Masters insists he has found Blackbeard's ship. "There's no other ship lost at Beaufort Inlet with anything more than 10 cannons, nor of more than 110 tons, that we know of," he said. "No other shipwreck reported in this area even remotely qualifies as a candidate."
Six months after the sinking of Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard, by then on another ship, was killed in a bloody battle with the Royal Navy off Virginia.

[From Quinn:] I just saw an old video of the 1950's show "You Asked For It" and the cowboy star Whip Wilson sang what he called "a pirate song." No title was given, but a few random lyrics are:
"making our home under the stars"
"For I take what I will"
"Be it gold, be it pearls"
"This is my creed, I take what I please" and I often please what I take (or something like that.)
Any idea what song this might be? Thank you so much!

[From Cascabel:] Huzzah !!!!!!!!!!!
Izabel's jury trial FINALLY came up today. She was found NOT GUILTY, (as expected).
The jury only deliberated a few minutes before returning a unanimous verdict. The State was unable to convince the jury that she knowingly had the knife in her luggage, and that she had any criminal intent. The jury realized that it was simply a mistake, and that we had legitimate reasons to have such a knife, and it was a simple accident that it was in her carry-on bag, as we had proof that we had properly checked in our firearms, and if we had known the knife was inside the lining of her bag, it would have been properly stowed along with our swords. All is well !!!!!!!

BLACK PEARL DOCKS

From The Log
Pirates' Movie Ship Comes to San Pedro
SAN PEDRO - The vessel made famous as Jack Sparrow's pirate ship, Black Pearl, of "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie fame, arrived in San Pedro July 19. Set dressers and stage designers will work on the 109-foot, three-masted tall ship for a month in preparation for the third installment of the series. The haunting vessel is currently docked at the end of Miner Street at Berth 46. While in town, Black Pearl can be admired from several vantage points along Cabrillo Beach. In the meantime, PWC riders and boaters are taking advantage of the rare opportunity to come right up to her for close-range viewing. I just saw the movie ("Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest") last week," said Jesse Morgan, who was helping his son launch their San Juan 27. "I can't wait to tell my wife that we sailed right past that very same boat today."
The aged wood and rusted nails gives the boat an intimidating and foreboding look. Each of the two decks on this classic pirate palace feature five gigantic cannons on each side. Every authentic detail on Black Pearl was crafted new for the second film, and now the process has begun all over again.
It is rumored that parts of the third "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie will be filmed along the coast of San Pedro and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

True Caribbean Pirates

The Other Pirate Movie (POTC2)
POTC 3 CASTING CALL
Weekend America
and much, much more.
Ahoy me lads and lasses,
What wonderfully enthusiastic words and compliments many of you've sent about the "True Caribbean Pirates" documentary on History Channel. Warmed up the very cockles of my heart, they did. If you missed it, it's not too late. It repeats:
tonight (July 12).at 9:00 pm
July 13 at 1:00 am (tonight after midnight)
July 16 at 6 pm.
Also if you missed Modern Marvel: Pirate Tech (with Gail Selinger, David Moore, Gary Harper and more) it repeats:
tonight (July 12) at 8 pm
July 13 at 12:00 am (I think this means tonight at midnight)
As for the comments, here a sampling of them:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Tamara Eastman: DAMN! That was a good documentary! One of the best I've ever seen, in fact. ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Mitch Toles: Christine & Gail look hot on TV. This show on the History Channel was great!!!! Good job to all the lads except for Jerry Reyes. He gives the fatal blow and kills Blackbeard...you bastard!
Mad Eye
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Cindy Collins: Well, I watched the True Pirates tonight and I must say I was more impressed with this than the other program I saw. ...My only serious complaint with the History pirates was that one of the commentators kept saying that pirates were hung. Grammatically speaking, I believe drapes are hung, people are hanged. But that's hardly worth getting upset about and has nothing to do with piratical accuracy. One thing I did wonder about, and again it's hardly that important I suppose, is when Teach took the Concorde, wasn't he in consort with Hornigold still? As I remember, Hornigold let him take the Condorde and they parted ways. I'll have to check my information. But I rather enjoyed this program, and you looked like you were enjoying it as well. Good job. ...This was certainly more enjoyable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reply from Tim Prokop the director to Cindy's comments: We did have two sloops attacking the Concorde, we just didn't say the second was Hornigold's. We did shoot the scene where Hornigold gives the Concorde to Blackbeard (with a requisite vote) but there was no time for it... So we fudged by saying Blackbeard boards the Concorde without mentioning Hornigold. A cheat & semantics, but at least we could accomplish that and not say anything wrong. (Dave Moore by the way thinks Teach was already with Bonnet by this time so maybe being non specific was better... and we did shoot all the Bonnet scenes and they were terrific. We didn't have time for them. But they were an absolute hoot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Dirk Evans: I can not tell you how impressed I was (nor my children) with seeing and hearing you on “True Pirates of the Caribbean”. But, enough of the flattery for now.
My thoughts, for what they are worth….
1. The Blackbeard movie if you want to call it that was a joke and an affront. Couldn’t agree with you more. Blackbeard in a tank top, wearing a felt hat, you got to be kidding!
2. POTC2 was fun, but a bit of a let down from the first; sequels usually are. I thought the FX was awesome and worth the price of admission alone, all in all it was good time and a group of 22 went in full Pirate regalia, such as it was. I was so glad to see a nod to Treasure Island with the Black Spot. WE all love the Capt. Jack character and all I can say is God Bless Johnny Depp; he’s good for the Pirate Trade. “Drinks all around!”
3. Finally and most importantly, the presentation on the History Channel was OUTSTANDING! My kids (and I must admit myself) were so impressed that I know “Jamaica Rose” and so impressed to see No Quarter Given on the TV.
I thought they did an excellent job (even though Ocracoke and Topsail Inlet look nothing like that). The only thing that I didn’t like about it was that it ended; I can listen to Pirates Tales all night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lynda-Marie AKA Captain Mayhem: <>Saw you tonight on True Pirates of the Caribbean - cool! ...How awesome was that?!? I was a bit dense, and then it clicked, Christine Lampe, editor of No Quarter Given - Oh, wait a minute, THAT'S JAMAICA ROSE!!! <>
I agree that there were a couple of quibbles with the stuff they showed, but for the most part, I can't believe that someone filmed a special on pirates and actually got it right! <>
(Of course, how much of that was due to them looking down the barrel of your pistol and realizing that they had better get it right?) <>
The one lady historian, whose name I can't recall at the moment sounded hysterical with the out of context declarations for the ads for the show - "The real pirates were brutal," "Terrifying!" My brother finally told me to put a sock in it for yelling back at the TV every time the ad came on, because I was saying things like, "Obviously, you don't GET what you're studying and why otherwise "honest" folks are fascinated by pirates, do you?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Debbie Thompson: We watched the ... "True Pirates of the Caribbean" and it was great! We enjoyed seeing you, it's good to put a face to someone who brings much joy in our reading. The enacting was fantastic and the narration was superb. There was so many familiar names and faces we know through NQG. It was exciting to say, "Oh yeah, I read his/ her book!" Thanks for taking part.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Cascabel: I saw "True Caribbean Pirates" the other night when it came on. I thought it was pretty well done, but they had to leave so much out in order to fit the time slot !!!! Probably should have been done as a two or three part series. I enjoyed your historical insights, and you looked great on camera. Fun to see Michael, Louie, etc. "playing pirates" !!!

REQUEST FROM THE DIRECTOR
OF "TRUE CARIBBEAN PIRATES"
*******************************
Tim Prokop (director) asked if the NQG readers would post their thoughts regarding "True Caribbean Pirates" on IMDB.com - or to go to IMDB.com and register and vote for the show? He says it does help to persuade the powers that be to make more such shows. He is working now to try and set up a sequel. As many of your comments were that the show was too short or needed to be in several parts, here's our chance to make that happen. Tim was very devoted to this project, and anxious to get everything as historically accurate as possible. I would love to see him get the chance to tell us more pirate stories.
DAVY JONE'S LOCKER
*********************
Here is a news article about Davy Jones, for which I supplied much of the information to the reporter. She only mentions me at the bottom, but I gave her most of the references she mentions.
http://www.courant.com/features/lifestyle/hc-davyjoneslocker.artjul07,0,7310662.story?coll=hc-headlines-custom2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought you might be interested in comparing what I sent her by email to the final product. Notice she gives me a quote that I did not
EXACTLY say (or write) - I made no mention of "Christian" sailors. She had asked me for some information about Davy Jones. She wanted to know who he was, why he was so scary, and why his legend had persisted for so long.
I was already working on an article about Davy Jones for NQG. I was pressed for time, so
I just quickly compiled some of my notes into a reply to her. My answer is not as full perhaps as I would have liked but here is what I sent her:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Davy Jones was not a real person. He is sort of an evil (but not always) angel for sailors. The legends around Davy Jones are rather vague and indefinite. Sailor tradition does not say what he looks like, or actually specify what the locker is. -- It might be something like a sea chest or a coffin. Unfortunate sailors who would fall into the sea might be caught in it. The sailor's body would fall into Davy Jone's Locker, but his soul would go to Fiddler's Green.
Some people say Davy Jones is a corruption of Duffer Jones -- a nickname for a clumsy person who often fell overboard. Or his name might be from euphemisms for the Devil (Deva, Davy or Taffy), and the Jones might be from "Jonah" (the one who was swallowed by a whale). "Duffy Johah" is a West Indian sailors term for the Devil.
The earliest appearance in print mentioning Davy Jones was in 1751, in Thomas Smollet's novel "The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle". Smollet wrote "I'll be damned if it was not Davy Jones himself. I know him by his saucer eyes, his three rows of teeth, and tail, and the blue smoke that came out of his nostrils. This same Davy Jones, according to the mythology of sailors, is the fiend that presides overall the evil spirits of the deep, and is often seen in various shapes, perching among the rigging on the eve of hurricanes, shipwrecks, and other disasters to which seafaring life is exposed, warning the devoted wretch of death and woe."
Though there was a little known pirate named David Jones (active 1634-1636), it is unlikely he is connected with the legend of Davy Jones.
I don't know why he is so scary (he actually isn't so scary in all the stories). I'm not sure why the story has held on for so long -- but there are many traditions and legends that hold on over the centuries, especially in maritime traditions.
Davy Jones is part of a special ceremony for whenever a ship crosses the equator. It's called "Crossing the line" Those who have previously crossed the line are called shellbacks or Sons of Neptune. The ceremony is a raucous and rowdy initiation for all those who've never crossed the line before. King Neptune (the eldest shellback portrays him) presides over the ceremony, and Davy Jones (the next eldest) is his assistant. I remember seeing this ceremony portrayed in an episode of JAG.

Besides "True Caribbean Pirates", we know a lot of you have seen the *other* pirate movie out last Friday. LOL -- of course I mean "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". I won't say much about it, for it's all been said by tons of other reviewers and on the several fan sites. But there are a lot of news articles and links below you might enjoy.

LAST THURSDAY, MIDNIGHT,
AT THE EL CAPITAN
**************************
[From Jerry Brawner:] I went with a group in costume to El Capitan last night for the midnight show of Pirates of the Carribean 2- this is just a few notes about the experience I thought I'd share.
I got there at 8:00 to keep a friend company in line, and even standing in line was quite a hoot - Pyrate on stilts, Pyrate barbershop quartets, Pyrate musicians. Most of us in costume were asked many times to pose for pictures either together or with passers-bye. I was approached twice by people from casting agencies soliciting extras for the ongoing principal photography for POTC3.
Richard, (who does Capt. Jack Sparrow at Faire so well) was just behind me in line, and what a gracious, friendly guy! - He wasn't hired for this venue (tho I believe he is for the Riv showing where the Poxy Boggards are this weekend?), but he was in full regalia, and worked the crowds like a real pro. What fun!
Once we were let in, at about 10:20, we found our seats, and were free to circulate, view, and even photograph the many glassed cases with movie props and memorabilia from the film in the lobby, and more downstairs.
The movie was prefaced by a costume competition, where all the participants were given "POTC2 El Capitan PREMIERE" caps as momentos, and the winner (one of the male Sparrow impersonators, I'm pretty sure ;-] ) got a pack of Disney "Park-Hopper" tickets.
The house lights dimmed on time, and even the several trailers that preceded the feature didn't dim the enthusiastic reactions from the crowd. Just before the actual film, there was a short (3 minute?) choreographed multimedia presentation (without live performers) with skulls, skeletons, projected explosions, front-and-rear-screen projection, dramatic music and sound effects - VERY exciting!
When the movie started, the on-screen appearance of each main character was greeted with enthusiasm and applause. The adventure was adventurous. The excitement infectious. The fights were exciting, with more than a touch of humor. The audience was alert, responsive, and enthusiastic in their reactions. The story engrossing and entertaining, and it was a wonderful experience. Don't want to giveaway any spoilers or spill any details, but if/when you see it; There's a wonderful surprise in the last few seconds at the end that nearly had me on my feet cheering. . . . and, if you sit thru the end titles, there's a short extra scene after to reward you for your patience.

[From Shari Land:] Regarding the PyracyPub hacker:
If you are using Mozilla Firefox as your browser (and if you're not you should be!) this is what you need to know and do, thanks to Mad Jack. The hacker is using a back-door patch and is going through people's names here at the Pub. I wish to thank Mad Jack on bended knee for this wonderful information!

>From Mad Jack:
I just found a trojan on my system called Backdoor.Redghost. It allows a remote user to take over your system. The info on it and the removal steps are here.

I installed an extension to my FireFox browser (under Tools -> Extensions, click "Get more extensions") called NoScript. It blocks the execution of web-based scripts unless you explicitly allow them. That'll gum up the boy's plans!
Here's a free line of defense that will help. Go to LavaSoft and download Ad-Aware Personal Edition. Damned good anti-spyware protection.
Next, go download Crap Cleaner, one of the best tools available for ridding yourself of all the junk web browsers leave on your system. This includes all manner of scripts that can hide malicious code. This one's free, as well.

THANKS TO THE PIRATES
AT PEPSI AMERICA'S SAIL IN BEAUFORT
**************************************
[From JoAnne Powell of the NC Maritime Museum]:
A word to all the pirates out there that appeared for the Pepsi America's Sail 2006 event that occurred here in Beaufort and Morehead City this past weekend-June 30 -- July 4--MANY MANY THANKS TO ALL THAT PARTICIPATED FOR A FANTASTIC JOB OF ENTERTAINING THE THOUSANDS. Everyone who saw the pirate encampment said it was one of the best events of the weekend. The authenticity and role playing was excellent and everyone was impressed and enjoy every bit of it. The pirates also entertained the crowds waiting to go aboard ships and made their waits more tolerable.
Those that came into the museum posed for pictures and thrilled the visitors.
Please pass this one to all you can that the efforts of the pirate reenactors to paint a picture of history with a touch of entertainment were much appreciated by all.
BLACKBEARD: TERROR AT SEA
*****************************
If yer not out tonight watching a midnight showing of Jack Sparrow's new movie, then you might wish to watch "Blackbeard: Terror At Sea". It replays tonight on National Geographic Channel at 9 pm P (probably ET time too, which means it's half through already, sorry). But it replays again tonight three hours later (Midnight PT). The show was an interesting show to watch -- just have to ignore some of the liberties they take with historical fact (like the female cabin "boy").
NEW PIRATE DVD COLLECTION
*****************************
The Pirates of the Silver Screen Collection features 5 discs of movies, including Douglas Fairbanks Sr. in "The Black Pirates", Rita Hayworth in "Dancing Pirate" (the first dancing musical in 100% technicolor), Charles Laughton in "Captain Kidd", Boris Karloff in a TV version of "Treasure Island", Robert Newton in "Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island" and "Devil's Stew", plus an all-new documentary, "The Pirates of Hollywood". 700 minutes in all.
The List Price is $19.98, but it's a few dollars cheaper than that on Amazon (I just ordered my own copy), and you qualify for Free shipping, if you order something else (such as the soundtrack to "Dead Man's Chest") to bring the order to over $25.
PIRATES AT DISNEYWORLD TOMORROW
.... AND A PIRATE WEDDING ON TV
**************************************
[From Hurricane (Robb Zerr)]:
Ahoy all!
Some of the The Pyrates of the Coast will be at DisneyWorld at the crack of dawn, tomorrow, Friday July 7. We'll be on TV with local reporters at the opening of the revamped Pirates of the Caribbean ride. So what does that mean to you?
You can see us wherever you are on The Daily Buzz. It's a nationally syndicated show that is on in the mornings.
Diosa and I will also be doing our wedding on set as well - the first of two. But this one everyone gets to see no matter where they are. How cool is that? All without spending money on gas or airfare...
We will be formally doing our vows the following night at the Pirate's Dinner Adventure Theatre. We have 70 brave friends and family members who will all be in costume. During their show we will come up and do our little marriage thing - we wrote our vows into the show.

and much, much more...
Ahoy me lads and lasses,
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is almost here. Because of this, there is a shipload of piratical happenings this weekend, and a ton of related things to tell you about the movie -- all given below. We have heard from those who were at the Premiere, and Cast and Crew screenings, and they were blown away by the movie. Better than the first - so we are really looking forwards to this.
We've got our tickets for a midnight showing tonight.
Well, if ya saw the Hallmark "Blackbeard" presentation a few weeks ago, then I needn't say much. You probably already know what I would say (nothing good). If ya didn't see it, you didn't miss much. There will be a brief review of it in the next issue of NQG (it's not worth spending much time on - which is a shame, with talent like Richard Chamberlain).
I can assure you that "True Caribbean Pirates", to air July 9, does right by Blackbeard, as well as Henry Morgan, William Jennings, Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Mary Read and Bart Roberts. I've already seen an advanced copy of this show, and it is well worth the watching. It is very historically correct (there's a few little things I could quibble with, but certainly not much), as well as it is interesting and exciting to watch. True, bein' less than 2 hours long by the time you take out the commercials, there is not much time to go into great depth on each of the pirates it features, but for the time it devotes to them, it does quite a creditable job. In this presentation, you'll spot many contributors to No Quarter Given - amongst the commentators are authors and historians Gail Selinger, Robert Zacks, David Moore, James Nelson, and Benerson Little. Amongst the reenactors are Gerard "Jerry" Reyes, Louie Lambie, Kenneth "Slinky" Clifton, and the late Jon Rose, who have all contributed to NQG. Many others of the re-enactors are friends and shipmates, including the crew of Tales of the Seven Seas. Amongst the vessels, look for the Brig "Pilgrim", "Spirit of Dana Point", "Royaliste", "Lady Washington", "Hawaiian Chieftain", Brig "Niagara", and "HMS Bounty". And of course, look for both of your NQG hosts and editors, Jamaica Rose (Christine Markel Lampe) as a commentator and Michael MacLeod (Michael Lampe) - as a reenactor in the shipboard scenes.
Watch the hour proceeding as well -- "Modern Marvels: Pirate Tech". Look for pirate author Gail Selinger ("Complete Idiot's Guide to Pirates") -- she's on both shows, so it will be a Gail Selinger double-header that night.
As for news about No Quarter Given magazine itself, I am striving to catch up with our magazine schedule. The March/April issue went out about two weeks ago. Those of you on the bulk subscription plan might be seeing it soon -- sometimes it takes 10 days to a month (or more, so some of you have reported). First class subscribers most likely have their issues by now. The May/June issue should be out by the end of next week, with the July/Aug issue close on it's heels.
RECENT ARTICLES ABOUT PIRATES
INSPIRED BY UPCOMING "DEAD MAN'S CHEST"
*******************************************
Pirates are now riding a crest of popularity due to the release of "POTC: Dead Man's Chest". There has been a slew of recent articles in newspapers, periodicals, and online journals about pirates, and comparing them to Jack Sparrow and the pirates in POTC.
All these links worked as of today, but be aware, articles are often posted for limited times, or later they want to charge you a fee to access older articles.

HISTORY CHANNEL PIRATE SHOWS
*********************************
Here is the History Channel schedule for the next week, Eastern (same as Pacific) zone times given, for three different pirate related programs:
Modern Marvels: Pirate Tech.
Sunday, July 09 @ 7pm ET
Bold, cunning, and audacious, pirates are a breed of fighting men and women who have terrorized the high seas since before recorded history. At the height of their power in the 1700's they literally influenced the fate of nations when they became embroiled in the rivalry between England and Spain. This special will visit maritime museums and shipwreck sites, utilize walk-and-talk demonstrations of fire arms, swords, and navigation instruments to help spotlight the innovations pirates brought to maritime technology. Includes a look at how many pirates modified their ships to make them faster and more powerful.

Blackbeard. Ann Bonny. Henry Jennings. Calico Jack. Henry Morgan. Black Bart Roberts. During the mid to late 17th and early 18th centuries, they were feared criminals. The Caribbean was their domain, the parade of treasure and cargo to Europe their target. The origins of Caribbean piracy began when Columbus made landfall in the
Bahamas. Two years later, the Pope granted Spain the exclusive right to the Caribbean and most of the New World. The Spanish reaped an immense fortune in gold and silver, but with a price. England, France, and Holland all desired a portion of this wealth and each established Caribbean bases and used privateers-- private sailors fighting for profit--to protect their interests and steal Spanish treasure. The line between privateering and piracy became blurred.
We'll examine this Golden Age of Piracy and the true stories of the infamous pirates, how they operated, and their successes and failures in this dark and deadly profession.

Bilge Pumps Pirate Movie Party, Bedford, TX
July 9th
Are you looking for a place to go to watch the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie that has a pirate atmosphere with lots of people looking to have a good time? Well, have the Bilge Pumps got a place for you! Next on the list of upcoming summer shows is one of our favorites and a first for us... a Bilge Pumps Pirate Movie Party!
We're going to rent out a theater at the Movie Tavern in Bedford, TX (right in between Dallas and Ft. Worth) on Sunday July, 9th from approximately 3-6 and we invite you all to come watch a 30 minute Bilge Pumps show followed by an exclusive screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" just for us piratey types. The cost will be $15.00 per person and that price will get you a movie ticket along with a soft drink and popcorn (with unlimited refills). Not too bad a price all together. We're going to shoot for a starting time of about 3 pm, but that might change slightly depending on the time the movie is slated to actually begin. The final, absolute, rock-solid start time will be set on Tuesday, July 4th.
Tickets have to be sold in advance due to the theater's policy of needing final attendance before the showing, so to get your tickets to come watch the Bilge Pumps and Johnny Depp on the same night, go to our Treasure Island page
http://www.thebilgepumps.com/treasure.pl
and order them securely online. You can also call me, Maroon the Shantyman, at 214-415-9563 to reserve your tickets in advance. Hope to see everyone there... with a friend!

IN MEMORIAM
***************
One of the best modern-written pirate songs is "The Red Queen" about Anne Bonny. It was the only pirate song (I know of) written by Leigh Ann Hussey, Celtic-Rock-Fusion musician, singer, and fiddler living in Berkeley, CA. We are saddened to report Leigh Ann was killed in an accident on her motorcycle, May 16, 2006. We are sure Fiddler's Green has been enhanced by the addition of her musical genius, but we will miss her.

Last weekend at the Cutthroats of Corona pirate festival Michael and I were interviewed at length by a reporter from National Public Radio, for a segment on "Pirate Culture" coming this Saturday on "Weekend America". It's supposed to be about 8 minutes long.

UPDATE ON ACCIDENT VICTIM
*******************************
[From Lorie Fletcher:] Good news regarding Lucas Efler, 32 who fell from the mast of the tall ship Lady Washington in Washington state on May 20th. Chances are very good for a very positive recovery. I was able to visit him a couple of times at OHSU. He was actually able to get up and walk a bit, was talkative, flirting with the nurses and ready to get sent home. He thanked Gray's Harbor Historical Seaport, the ship's crew and all the pirates for the well wishes, cards and letters. The crew presented him with a hardwood belaying pin from the Lady which Lucas nearly broke in two with his fall emblazoned with their signatures. He has now returned home to Switzerland to complete healing and looks forward to building a model of the Lady Washington and getting back to his active life of SCUBA, sailing and skydiving.
