We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas.  These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine.  If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us.  Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month.  Below are some past email notices.  Be aware, some links and information on older messages could be obsolete.

MID-JUNE PIRATE UPDATE
********************************
Princess Bride Mockumentary
    Pirates of Treasure Island
        True Caribbean Pirates
            Buccaneers Ball
                POTC Updates,
                    and much, much more...

Ahoy me lads and lasses,

We are eagerly awaiting tonight's Hallmark presentation of "Blackbeard". http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/us_framework.jsp?BODY=program.jsp&CONTENT=DAM_FAM_5346404
You can see a clip at the above website. Airtimes are: June 17 (8pm/11pm) and June 24 (5pm)

And as we all eagerly await the return of Jack Sparrow in "Dead Man's Chest", you can bide the time by watching the new trailer at:
http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/pirates/

And while you are waiting, there is still a lot of news to bring to you, and other things to watch, ....

"PRINCESS BRIDE" PIRATE MOCKUMENTARY
******************************************
The newly released "Princess Bride" DVD contains a new pirate "mockumentary" that features yours truly (as well as pirate authors Gail Selinger and Dr. Robert Ritchie, and another pirate scholar whose name escapes me). It lasts about 15 minutes long. It was released June 13. If you go in search of this, do not confuse this new release with the 2001 "Special Edition" release. The new release is available in two versions: the Dread Pirate Roberts edition and the Buttercup edition. I have not yet discovered what the difference is between the versions (other than the covers and the name - I've only seen the Dread Pirate Roberts version) You can see them listed on Amazon if you want to see what the covers look like, to make sure you get the right one (or perhaps order them).
I've heard there is a two-page ad for this DVD release in the first few pages of the current Rolling Stone magazine.
[thanks to Cap'n Ned]

PIRATES OF TREASURE ISLAND
*****************************
Michael MacLeod plus several other S. California pirates, including Tony Kopec, Dan McGrew, Jerry Reyes, and the late Jon Rose, can be seen in the soon-to-be-released video "Pirates of Treasure Island", starring Lance Henriksen. This video is to be released to the home video market on June 27.

TRUE CARIBBEAN PIRATES
*************************
Finally, look for Michael Lampe and yours truly, plus several other pirate experts (Gail Selinger, David Moore, Terry Breverton, Robert Ritchie, Benerson Little, and more) and pirate re-enactors in "True Caribbean Pirates" on the History Channel, July 9. After seeing "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" on July 7, then learn the true stories on July 9. Here's a description from their market information:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Some of the best-known pirate stories and clichés are little more than fantasy. True Caribbean Pirates separates fact from fiction as two centuries of pirate history and lore is condensed into the exciting two-hour summer experience. True Caribbean Pirates presents the thrilling yet historically accurate tales of the world’s greatest pirate adventures. Journey aboard the vessels of Captain Henry Morgan the wealthy pirate pioneer, the fearsome Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, “Calico Jack” Rackam and the first and most famous female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, and witness the end of the golden age of piracy with history’s most successful pirate, Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts. <> The blood stained history of piracy springs to life on screen with the help of state of the art CGI and reenactments in exotic locales, archival imagery and artifacts. Interviews are provided by some of the world’s foremost pirate scholars, which help viewers understand the dark nature of the pirate’s life. True Caribbean Pirates succeeds in humanizing these larger-than-life pirate legends, and showing the tolls of being a cutthroat.
MORE NEWS ABOUT NEW ORLEANS
Pirates have invaded
********************************
Ahoy Rose,
It seems that New Orleans wasn't hit hard enough by Katrina, but on top of that, pillaging is taking place on a large scale here too. What is happening can be construed as a form of piracy. There is always some low-life blood-sucker of some sort that shows up after a disaster. These "pirates" are cruising around the flood ravaged areas, stealing architectural decor off of our hundred year old or better homes, in the original "suburbs" of New Orleans. They are going around, taking doors, shutters, cornices, brackets and other various and sundry from the homes here. Many homes are wide open after door to door searches performed by National Guard and rescue workers looking for live people and dead. So these thieves are taking advantage. Homes are being entered daily by fake contractors, and they are tearing up the walls and flooring, stealing pocket doors, even wooden widows and frames. These items are then being trucked out to large cities around the nation, being sold to unscrupulous dealers in antique architectural items. All of these items are such that you cannot simply cannot get at Lowes or Home Depot. These are irreplaceable hand-made/carved over one-hundred years ago. We are being slowly picked apart.
On top of this, people who are rebuilding their homes are not safe from thievery. Those that cannot live in their homes yet, or work during the day, cannot guard their new a/c units or other construction materials. In most cases, they receive these items on a weekday. The next day, they are stolen. Either by their own workers, or a neighboring crew, or crackheads, or "truck followers". These items are then either sold to someone else nearby, or trucked out of town. Unfortunately, the police have enough problems with being short-handed. The governor doesn't seem to care either, nor our recently re-elected mayor. Many citizens are staying home from work, armed to the teeth. Even items that have been installed are being ripped out and resold. Toilets, sinks, central heating and cooling units to name a few.
There have been a few arrests made. But people are wishing that the National Guard were still here in force. They should be here and stay here until enough people return to keep an eye out for their neighbor's and their own properties. It's bad enough that looters still abound, rifling flooded homes for peoples jewelry and other valuables, found mostly in un-flooded upper floors of ravaged homes.
I hope good people around the nation hear of this plight and keep a weather eye open for traders in these items. Many of these news items can be read about at www.NOLA.com  .
Jamaica, me dear!
The other day I was graced with some entertainment I thought the good readers of NQG should know about - T'was a puppet show (yes, a puppet show) called Everyone Loves Pirates (and ain't that the truth?) by the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers. T'was hands down one of the funniest, most clever and well written shows I've seen in many an age. Me little deckhands, from 12 years old to 5, all enjoyed it, raved about it in fact. Let the sniveling shore-bound puppies have their Bert and Ernie, we have Frogtown Mountain! Their busy performance schedule can be found at http://www.frogtownpuppets.com/
Ahoy me lads and lasses,
While the ravages of last year's hurricanes are still raw in the minds of many, and much of the damage has not even begun to be repaired, we now embark on a new hurricane season. We hope all of you along the susceptible coastlines are taking appropriate measures to be even better prepared than in the past.
Speaking of ravages and damage, the all clear signal has been sent out for those of you who visit the Pyracy Pub. I just checked it out for myself. The infestation has been routed, and it appears to be safe to visit again. But always beware of emails with attachments ending in .EXE !!!!
I saw many of our brethren yesterday at the Big Bear Pirate Festival (Fawnskin, CA, on the north side of Big Bear Lake). 'Tis a grand little festival, and it was quite fun. I had a chance to reprise my role of Mrs. Dorothy Thomas in the "Tryal of Anne Bonny and Mary Read". You can meet Gail Selinger, author of the "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Pirates". You can even buy one of her new books, and have her sign it special for you. A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR HIM --- AT AGE 9
Remains recovered from an 18th century wreck are identified as those of John King, a youngster who joined Capt. Black Sam Bellamy.
By Thomas H. Maugh II
Times Staff Writer
June 1, 2006
Underwater archeologists have identified the partial remains of the youngest known pirate to ply U.S. waters, a 9-year-old boy who eagerly joined Capt. Black Sam Bellamy's crew on the infamous Whydah.
Teenage pirates were quite common during the early 18th century, but "this is the youngest one I have ever come across," historian Ken Kinkor of the Expedition Whydah Sea-Lab & Learning Center in Provincetown, Mass., said Wednesday in announcing the discovery.
The young pirate's idyll aboard the Whydah did not last long. The ship foundered in a storm off Cape Cod only three months after he joined, crashing to the sea floor with all but eight of its 180-man crew. Six of the eight survivors were tried and hanged in Boston. The other two escaped punishment, thanks to the efforts of famed lawyer Cotton Mather.
The tale of the pirate, identified as John King, was then pretty much lost to history until explorer Barry Clifford used court documents and an early salvage map to locate the Whydah in 1984 — the first time that an authenticated wreck of a pirate ship had been discovered.
In the subsequent 20 years, Clifford and his crew of divers have recovered more than 100,000 artifacts from the wreck, bringing them to the surface, conserving them and putting them on display at their museum on the end of a Provincetown pier.
The wreck "was like a 300-year-old Wal-Mart on the bottom of the ocean," Clifford said, with an unusually broad variety of artifacts stolen from other ships. Despite the quantity of materials recovered, he added, "we've never really discovered the mother lode of the ship."
One thing they did discover was a small shoe, a silk stocking and a small fibula, or lower leg bone. The items had been in storage unremarked for nearly 20 years before Clifford and Kinkor recently made the connection to young John King.
John King's fragmentary story is found in a deposition filed with the governor of Antigua on Nov. 30, 1716, by Abijah Savage, commander of the Antiguan sloop Bonetta. As was the usual practice, Savage reported to the governor the details of a pirate attack on his ship.
On Nov. 9, the Bonetta was attacked by Bellamy's ship and held for 15 days. The pirates took all of their valuables, including "a Negro Man and an Indian Boy belonging to Mr. Benjamin Wicker" before releasing them.
Savage wrote that one John King, who was sailing with his mother as a passenger from Jamaica to Antigua, "deserted his sloop, and went with the Pirates and was so far from being forced or compelled thereto by them as the deponent could perceive or learn that he declared he would Kill himself if he was Restrained, and even threatned his Mother who was then on Board as a Passenger with the Deponent."
Such depositions are usually very brief and record only the most striking things that happened, Kinkor said. "It was pretty unusual for Capt. Savage to have recorded it."
Kinkor added there were "a variety of reasons why a pirate's life would have appealed to a youngster — a free and easy lifestyle, and a classless democratic subculture."
Spurred by this account, Clifford showed the short fibula to expedition archeologist John de Bry and Smithsonian Institution expert David Hunt. Both agreed that the fibula belonged to a child age 8 to 11.
The stocking is of woven French silk, Kinkor said, and the shoe — which is only 2 inches in width at its widest point — is of upper-class design and craftsmanship, consistent with it belonging to John King.
The shoe and fibula were found adjacent to a large concretion of artifacts that is now on display at the museum. Such concretions occur when iron objects electrolyze in seawater, catalyzing the formation of stone-like materials that bind artifacts together.
X-rays of the concretion show that it has many other bones, a possible skull and hundreds of other artifacts buried deep inside. "It's a 300-year-old time capsule," Clifford said.
Eventually they may drill into it and use fiber optics to determine if the other bones represent the rest of the boy's skeleton, he said.
But they are unlikely to take it apart, he added. "It's much more interesting seeing the X-ray and the bones protruding."
SAILOR INJURED ON THE LADY WASHINGTON
*******************************************
[From Lori Fletcher, May 22:]
Tall ship sailor, Lucas Efler, 32 from Switzerland, sustained critical injuries when he fell from the rigging during a public sail on the Lady Washington in Ilwaco, WA Saturday evening. The Lady Washington has an excellent safety record and this is a rare accident. Many local pyrates were aboard at the time as we were there working at a tall ship festival. Captain Steve and crew of the Lady Washington, and local Coast Guard, assisted by two nurses who were attending the event as members of the pyrate group Rifle, Loot and Salvage, Co., Mary Egan and Tracy Nietupski, are credited with quick and professional action on Lucas's behalf.
Lucas is in the Intensive Care Unit at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and cannot take calls or visits from non-family members at this time. Cards and balloons are welcome, no flowers.
Lucas was a "Two Weeks Before the Mast" volunteer on the Lady Washington. I had the privilege to get to know him quite well as a member of the crew that I sailed with on the Coos Bay, OR to Ilwaco, WA transit last week. He loves
adventure and has a good strong fighting spirit. The medical outlook is good that he will recover from this accident. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Bob Kennedy and Grays Harbor Historical Seaport has been in touch with his family in Switzerland. Anyone wishing to contribute to assist Lucas may contact me, I will coordinate our efforts with Grays Harbor.
TIME TRAVEL THROUGH PIRACY
BY MERIAH RIVERA
Photography and multiple media artwork
[From Krystal at Enchanted Deva's:]
June 3rd – June 30th
Gallery Hours: Tue-Sun 2-7pm
Enchanted Deva’s
5050 Vineland Ave, North Hollywood, CA 91601
No Cost for Exhibit
Meriah has been experimenting with a camera since she was 10 years old. She became fascinated with photographing the Pirate community two years ago. She enjoys the reward of photographing historical re-enactments because it is as though she has traveled back in time and escaped the present with her own personal time travel device, becoming one of her own ancestors, who may have been infamous pirates.
One can appreciate the intensity of contrast in her work. Drawn to clashing visual combinations, her photography includes images such as a pirate in a church with a gun; dead branches amongst the greenery of a blooming plant; and a headless pirate drawing his sword. Her own enjoyment of dressing up lends itself to the pirate community of eclectic souls where she has found a niche in preserving the moments discovered in the re-creation atmosphere.
Unable to contain her enjoyment of these captured moments, Meriah has also created a collection of multi-dimensional works of art incorporating her photography in a variety of forms and textures.
In June we will unveil the visions only glimpsed by those she has photographed, or close friends. We invite you to join with us in viewing the raw edge of piracy caught by the lens of Meriah Rivera.
RACE TO FIND JOHN PAUL JONES'
SHIP
*******************************
Race to find flagship of first US naval hero - in North Sea
Teams from both sides of the Atlantic to search for wreck of John Paul Jones's frigate off Yorkshire coast
By David Keys and Martin Hodgson
Published: 28 May 2006
Every US schoolchild knows that John Paul Jones, their country's first naval hero, rejected a call to surrender with the immortal words: "I have not yet begun to fight." What is less well known is that he was within sight of the Yorkshire coast when he uttered them.
Whether Jones ever said what was attributed to him is not certain. But it is true that one of the bloodiest naval battles of the American Revolution was fought in the North Sea on 23 September 1779, and that the American commander, despite having to abandon his sinking flagship, won the day. He captured the British warship attacking him and sailed off into legend.
This summer, 227 years after that encounter, British and American crews will again contend with each other off the coast of Yorkshire. This time they are in a race to discover the final resting place of the Bonhomme Richard, the 42-gun frigate commanded by the "Father of the American Navy". Jones's heirs in the US military are planning an underwater search, but they face competition from two other teams.
The adventure novelist Clive Cussler is backing a separate expedition by the National Underwater and Marine Agency (Numa), and a third team of local divers from Yorkshire will investigate a wreck in Filey Bay.
The Bonhomme Richard has long been a holy grail of marine archaeology, thanks to its association with Jones, said the naval historian Peter Reavely. "Britain has Nelson, and John Paul Jones plays the same role in the US. He is the greatest naval hero of the American Revolutionary War."
Despite repeated searches, the location of the wreck has remained a mystery. British divers believe the wreck of a wooden ship found in Filey Bay is that of the Bonhomme Richard, said team member Tony Green. "We think the wreck in Filey Bay is the most likely candidate - but we're still some way off proving it. There are three teams looking, so someone's got to find something."
Recent research by marine historians has cast doubt on the British divers' theory, and the US teams will focus their efforts further offshore.
The race to find the vessel will start in earnest this July, with the arrival of a joint team from the Naval Historical Centre in Washington and the Connecticut-based Ocean Technology Foundation. Later this year, Mr Cussler, who has already led unsuccessful expeditions in search of the wreck, is expected to launch a third mission.Using hi-tech underwater scanning systems, the US naval team plans to survey large swathes of seabed off Flamborough Head.
"We're going to have to survey at least 20 square miles of seabed to stand any chance of finding her," said Robert Neyland of the US Naval Historical Centre.
Originally named the Duc de Duras, the ship was built in 1765, then bought by the French government, which refitted her as a warship and lent her to the fledgling US Navy. John Paul Jones re-named her the Bonhomme Richard - after a magazine published by the US ambassador to France, Benjamin Franklin.
A Scotsman who started his seafaring career at the tender age of 13, Jones was considered a pirate by the British, but a hero by America's rebellious colonists. In 1779 he took the Richard and three other vessels on a raiding expedition around the British coast, hoping to draw the Royal Navy away from its blockade of American ports.The squadron captured 13 ships before attacking a Royal Navy warship, the Serapis, which was escorting 41 British merchant vessels en route from the Baltic.
After a savage four-hour battle, Jones captured the Serapis, but his ship was so badly damaged that it was abandoned. Safely aboard the British flagship, his crew escaped to Holland and eventually returned to America.
The rediscovery of Jones's flagship would be more significant than that of the Titanic in 1985, said Melissa Ryan, project manager at the Ocean Technology Foundation. "The Bonhomme Richard was lost in a battle of national importance: the first naval victory for America during the Revolutionary War." The battle provided an early victory for the Americans, and convinced France to bankroll the rebel army, she said. "It was a turning point in our history."
"The wood cutters are generally a rude drunken crew, some of which have been pirates, and most of them sailors. We are sad to report that due to the estimated $1.5 million needed to fix the dry rot problem, the Boy Scout Sea Base in Newport Beach is selling the 1905 Baltic Trader "Argus" on E-Bay.
Jamaica Rose and Michael MacLeod, and their daughter Evaine, have sailed as sail training crew many times with "Argus". In fact, it was the leadership experience of bossing Boy Scouts around that helped to get their daughter into the U.S. Air Force Academy, and on the way to becoming the instructor pilot she is now.
We hope that someone with enough funds to take good care of the "Argus" will win the bid. Better yet, maybe some generous pirate will donate the funds needed to fix her up so the Scouts can keep her, and she can go on with her mission of training our youth.
At this time, there are no bids on the "Argus"
You can see a clip at the above website.
June 17 (8pm/11pm) and June 24 (5pm)
This show sounds interesting, but don't count on much historical accuracy, according to what the synopsis from the Hallmark website gives:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the Golden Age of Piracy, at the dawn of the 18th century, Blackbeard stood out among the lawless rogues as the most fearsome and notorious seafarer of them all. He killed for the reputation, and his reputation has become legend.
In order to restore safe passage to the sea lanes, Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy scouts the seas and offers amnesty to all pirates who choose to give up their evil ways. An imposing force, Maynard meets his match when he’s taken by a fearsome menace in the West Indies, a pirate sailing off the Island of St. Vincent. Edward Teach has secured for himself a 26-gun, richly laden French “guineyman” that will serve as his new flagship. His goal, to find and lay claim to the fabled treasures of Captain Kidd.
Transformed into the newly christened Blackbeard, Teach establishes a devilish image with his long black coat, black hat, bandoleered cutlasses, pistols and swords. The educated Maynard, his greatest adversary, can be of great use to Blackbeard. What unfolds is an epic battle for control of the seas, for the honor of Maynard’s beloved friend Charlotte Ormond and the possession of untold riches that lie buried in a place as fearsome and unpredictable as Blackbeard himself: the ghostly Vulture Island.
Stars: Angus Macfayden, Stacy Keach, Richard Chamberlain, and Rachel Ward.

CORR THIEVES ONLINE WEBSHOW
INVOLVES PIRATES TOO
********************************
http://www.corrthieves.com/
<> The Corr Thieves describe their activities: "Corr Thieves is a group of amateur actors who enjoy role playing, ren life, and filming and jumbling it all into one. We are trying to run two races right now, an online web show and live acting at ren faires and other events. The show surrounds Capt. Maavus T. Meritt (a pirate) and Garreth (a thief), the adventures they have and the friendship they have built. The rest of the cast includes Lord Jonathan Caspian, a high ranking official in the local thieves guild, Theolyn B. Croteau, Caspian's bodyguard, gypsy, pirate and alchemist, and a slew of other characters.
We are trying to have a good mix of suspense, mystery, a bit of drama, a lot of comedy and good chunk of action. We currently have 2 full episodes up to view. They are broken up and updated in short installments. We do our best to have an update twice a month, the middle and last weekends. The last weekend of every month will always be an episode update where the middle of the month may be bloopers, behind the scenes, a new photo shoot, fan art, etc. Each section of an episode we post is generally 4-6 minutes in length. <>We are doing this for fun. We started this project quite some time ago and we have yet to make a dime from it. Which is perfectly fine. We are doing this to have a good time. We just hope that everyone else is enjoying it as much as we are. If not, thats okay. We plan to keep filming until the day it becomes a burden and I dont see that happening any time soon.
When you watch the show, we always like to hear feedback. Just dont forget that we ARE amateurs in all aspects. That includes acting, editing, music creation, script writing, the whole nine yards. As time goes on, I think we are getting better and we are saving our pennies for better equipment... so someday it might actually look professional."

"Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel" Thu May 4, 9:49 AM ET

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine website reported.
According to online magazine www.zsaru.hu, workers in Szeged in the south of Hungary tried to move the barrel after they had drained it, only to find it was surprisingly heavy and were shocked when the body of a naked man fell out.
The website said that the body of the man had been shipped back from Jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return.
According to the website, workers said the rum in the 300-liter barrel had a "special taste" so they even decanted a few bottles of the liquor to take home.
The wife has since died and the man was buried in a proper grave.

Ahoy me lads and lasses,

Yesterday, we had a grand pirate rendezvous for the release of Gail Selinger's new book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Pirates" [Alpha, 2006]. Many pirates (both in garb, and in stealth) came to the Pirates-n-Plunder store in Whittier, CA, to show their support, and to get their books signed by "Cap'n Ned" (Gail's alter ego). It was great to see many of you there. For those of you who didn't have a chance to come to the celebration, you can find the book in major bookstores, and also from Amazon.com.
[For those of you who have the book, or plan to get it: Book Errata: On pg. 289, the date 1720 in the middle of the page should really be 1718. (this was not Gail's error, but a change made by the publisher, and not even corrected when she notified them of it)]

We are hearing from many of you NQG bulk rate subscribers that the January issue of NQG is just now washing up on your shores. It was mailed late March, so those of you who haven't yet seen yer copy, it might still yet find it's way to you.

NEW INTERNATIONAL PIRATE SOCIETY
LAUNCHES BLACK FLAG BALL
TO BENEFIT NEW ORLEANS
************************************
[Press release from E (formerly of the Bilge Pumps), aka Robert McDorman:]

Real Life Pirates Set to Plunder the City of New Orleans! City is on full alert!
(New Orleans, LA) April 18, 2006 – Rumors are flying that pirates from the days of old are planning to ravage the City of New Orleans, July 7th 2006, and will be concentrating their attack on the French Quarter. On April 18th, a desperate call came into City Hall in New Orleans warning them of the raid. The city is on full alert and is ready for the impending invasion.
It is said that The International Pirate Society, a recently formed organization for those that live and breathe the romanticized ideals of the Golden Age of piracy are the culprits behind this fearsome deluge.
When questioned, the leader of the Society had this to say. “Aye, the fact be true,” states E, a surly and enormous pirate, “but not quite what ye may be thinkin’, matie.”
This band of Buccaneers are plundering New Orleans for a good cause. On July 7th 2006, the IPS is hosting the Pirate Invasion Parade & Black Flag Ball, a night of charity and a chance for pirates from all walks of life to give help where it is needed. And what self respecting pirate would go to New Orleans without a Parrothead or two?
“This be a call for all Brethren of the Coast to shake your booty and party like a pirate to help rebuild New Orleans and Save the Manatees!”
The evening will begin with a viewing of the latest ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie. This will shortly be followed by a parade in true New Orleans style through the historic French Quarter. This parade will feature hordes of individuals in fancy dress, pirate crews from across the country, the Pirate King and Queen and a few local celebrities. The parade will end on the doorstep of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, where the Society will take over the facility in true pirate style and host a fundraising Pirate Ball to benefit the ‘Renew New Orleans Foundation’ as well as the ‘Save the Manatee Club’.
There will be live entertainment, done only the way a pirate can, as well as an auction. All proceeds from this event will be divided between the two worthy charities at the end of the night. There are new and exciting features continuously being added to this event.

[From Gareth Thomas:] In reading my own excited announcements about the launching of the HMCA website and doling out thanks to those who helped I made a serious error. No Quarter Given has announced our workshops, promoted the HMCA in its many facets and continues to be a supporter of all our efforts. It was due to my own negligence that NQG was left out of the acknowledgement. I will be presenting myself to Jamaica to be bound to the mainmast and flogged with the current issue of NQG at the earliest opportunity.
Thank you!

RESPONSES TO THE APRIL FOOLS EMAIL
*************************************
After receiving the last NQG email newsletter, a lot of you wrote to congratulate us on getting an interview with Johnny Depp. I did not intend for the April Fools joke to work so well -- I did warn you in the title that it was the NQG - April Fools Pirate Update. And I did include a P.S. at the bottom explaining the joke.. But it was a long message, so many of you probably didn't read carefully to the bottom. Or you skimmed for the information you were interested in. Well - to set the record straight, as of now, we do not have an interview with Johnny Depp (but things could change you know).

Some of you wanted to subscribe (or re-subscribe) to make sure and get the March issue:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Great, I'll mail the subscription in on Monday. The Johnny Depp interview in your next issue piqued my interest as did the article on flintlocks in your January issue.
Thanks again,
Maria
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Others of you just sent congratulations:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ahoy!!!! Christine,
Alright Girl, Give we want details on the INTERVIEW with Capt. SPARROW!!!
How Cool was that !!!!!
Tah, Alice York Bradford
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some of you responded with your own April Fool's (aka "Liberté gets her revenge"):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
COP TAKES REVENGE ON APRIL FOOLS JOKE! NEWS AT 5
Local teacher, publisher busted in robbery sting. It is believed she might be the notorious AKA "Jamaica Rose", Investigators are still trying to piece together how the undercover agent actually managed to infiltrate the pirates to such an extent as to actually being able to uncover the notorious Pirate in her own lair unaware!
The undercover officer was just recently transferred to Robbery detail, but no other details were being released by officials at this time on how they actually managed to apprehend such a high ranking political figure in the pirate world as "The Rose".
"It had long been rumored that she alone is the only living Pirate that knows for sure where Capt. Kidd's treasure truly is and if it is her for sure, than we are all looking forward to finally being able to solve this and many more cases that has baffled the authorities thorough out the so called golden age of piracy. You can bet we will be there when they uncover all that loot!"quotes Gerardo Rivera.
You can expect a flurry of law suits laying claim to the treasures suspected to be in the famous pirates possession. ( additional info see page 6) Ha Ha your self!
And some of you responded with derision:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi kids! Johnny Depp gave "us"??? and interview? You? That had to be a hoot.
shayna
[Ed. Note -- Hey -- it's not that far out of the realm of possibility. We DO have connections. When the last movie came out in July 03 we did get an interview with Lee Arenberg who played Pintel ('ello Poppet)]

POTC LEATHER JACKET ON SALE
*******************************
At http://disneyshopping.go.com/ they are having a sale of a Pirates of the Caribbean leather jacket..
If you put in the key word of "Pirate jacket" - you'll see a leather jacket with patches.
Or go straight to it by (you'll probably have to cut and paste this way): http://disneyshopping.go.com/DSSectionPage.process?Merchant_Id=2&Section_id=14820&Store_Id=8&Product_Id=187553&Searchstr=pirate+jacket&Page=1
The image only shows the front. The back has a large screened logo that is very well done. I'm told sizes run large.  This jacket is only from an edition of 500.
It's on sale from $219 to $119.99 (almost half price).
Also, if you put in the coupon code of "SAVENOW" - I think you'll get the $25 off for purchases over $75 (good through May 7). It worked for me, but you might need to be registered with Disney first. So you might want to sign up with Disney before shopping (it's free).

LOTS OF POTC SWAG TO BUY AT DOWNTOWN DISNEY
***************************************************
Disney is finally getting with it, in regards to marketing the "Pirates of the Caribbean" - the ride and the movie. I (Jamaica Rose) was at the big Disney store in Downtown Disney (Anaheim, CA) earlier this month. As you walk in the main door on the north end you are greeted by a whole Pirates of the Caribbean display. The store has several new t-shirts, and a cool sweatshirt design. There was also a knit cap (watch cap) with a visor (I got one of those) - more subtle - not so blatantly commercial looking, and practical for sailing. There is a POTC throw (soft fuzzy blanket - only $32 - cheap for a throw), a shoulder bag, clutch bag (gold plastic with three skull&crossbones), chain wallet, baseball, picture frames, ALL KINDS OF STUFF. A few things have the new POTC "Dead Men Tell No Tales" movie images and logos. Many things are more generic - with "Pirates of the Caribbean" and pirate images or skulls and crossbones - could refer to the ride or the movie.
My favorite -- a soft stuffed Mickey Mouse as Jack Sparrow - complete with bead dangles, red scarf and Jack's leather hat, and Minnie Mouse as the Red Head ("We wants the Red Head" - she even has white lacy bloomers on under the red satin skirt). There's also Pluto as the dog with the keys, and Goofy as another pirate (he looked like one from the ride). I was laughing out loud looking at them. They were only $14 each -- not a bad deal. Several people were buying Mickey - so he might get scarce real fast.
There is a Donald Duck pirate rubber duckie for the bath tub.
They are still selling the POTC Game of Life. They had several (floor to ceiling stack) of the large 18" (?) Jack action figures.
So, if yer anchored in Southern California waters, you might want to hie yerself off to Downtown Disney if you want some POTC swag.
Also - if you go, check out the little outdoor merchant about halfway between the ESPN Sports Center and the Compass Books Store/Cafe -- in one of their display cases they had a bunch of pirate stuff - many things from Accoutrements like I sell - but a few other things I wasn't familiar with. Including a mini-gear-bag -- could be used as a purse I think -- black and red. I was too tired at the time, and had my hands full with my other loot so I didn't investigate further. I'll have to go back.

PIRATE WIFE SWAP?
********************
ABC SEARCH FOR Moms WHO ARE REENACTORS. Wife Swap is beginning its 3rd Season on ABC and the premise of Wife Swap is that one parent from each household swaps places for a week to experience how another family lives. It is an incredible family experience and opportunity to both learn and teach different family values. Wife Swap is a fascinating story of what happens when two married couples see themselves and their spouses in a whole new light. The New York Post says, "It should be called ‘Life Swap’ because it's not just the wives who learn something here. It's the families." All families featured on the show receive a $20,000 honorarium. Potential families can live anywhere in the United States, but we ask that families applying for the show consist of two parents and have at least one child, age 5 or older, living at home. To submit for the show please call 212-404-2442, or email a family photo and description to: rachelle.mendez(at)rdfusa.com

MALLORY AND MCCALL WEBSITE
********************************
http://www.MalloryandMcCall.com
Long time pirate musicians Mallory and McCall now have their own website. Better yet -- they have a new song book (very ecletic, but several pirate songs included), and soon a CD (again ecletic, but pirate songs will be featured). The website is still experiencing growing pains and is under construction, but take a visit to it, and then come back for new updates. They have some music posted ("We'll Rant and We'll Roar [Like Bold Fighting Pirates]" is there--just the sheet music, so far, not the recording) and links to other sites. [From Janna:] "Most of the pages were early attempts and will slowly get a face lift. Most important, the main promo for our new book and sampler CD is not even in place! Do you have a book or CD you want promoted? This is one way we can share. How about artwork? Bonnie? There should be a way to be an outlet for creative people. How about entertainers looking for gigs? We can link you, too. Our hope is to be a resource for all sorts of things that interest us--and our friends. It would be nice to sell some books and albums and to get bookings, but that's only a small part of it. One of our main goals is to get our material out there for others to perform. We'd like our originals to keep going after we can't. I also plan to put in a "Current Events for M & Mc" to let folks know where we are playing, what we are doing, and maybe even what we are thinking.
Take a look. It's www.MalloryandMcCall.com . Easy enough to remember.
As we work on our new albums: "And Then We Wrote...and Re-Wrote..." and the newly named pirate album, "Kings of the Sea," we would like to give away a song every so often."

APRIL FOOLS PIRATE UPDATE
********************************
Next LORE
New Pirate Book Release Party
Pirate TV
Mallory & McCall's Book
... and much more!

Ahoy and greetings me hearties,

The long overdue January issue of No Quarter Given is now at the press, and should be sent out probably on Monday. Keep a look out for it. Rather than catching up as we had planned, we must offer our humble apologies that this issue is further behind than ever. Be heartened though -- this is just a temporary situation. Come this June, I will be done with my current course of studies (and work), and will have more time to get back on schedule. I hope you will think this issue well worth the wait though. There are some wonderful treasures within.
Some of the articles this issues includes:
--Was GULLIVER a PIRATE? (by Graham Harris)
--Blackbeard: Terror At Sea- A Review of Documentary
--A Brief Note on Powder Chests (by Benerson Little)
--Building Yer Own Buccaneerin’ Boat. (by Capt. John Wynders)
--FLINTLOCKS 101: An Introduction (by Arthur "Cascabel" Whittam)
--and much more.

Keep an eye out soon for our also belated March NQG issue. Not only will we have Part Two of Cascabel's Flintlock article, but there will also be a lengthy interview with Johnny Depp on the making of "Pirates of the Caribbean II". Recently, he very generously gave us an in-depth conversation over the phone.

NEXT LORE
***********
    For the several of you who wrote, lamenting that you missed the pirate classes at LORE on March 4 and 5, take heart. The LORE organizers were very happy with the pirate turnout. They have invited us back, and in fact want us to increase the number of classes we present. So mark yer calendars now ... the next LORE weekend of pirate workshops will be on October 14 & 15, 2006. More details to follow.
    We are recruiting for new instructors/participants, and are getting ideas for new classes. Let us know if you would like to instruct, or if you have ideas for a class you'd like to attend.
The "Historical Rogues Meet at a Tavern" was a huge hit. People are still talking about it, and the organizers really want us to do it again. Thus we are recruiting for those who would like to portray an historical pirate, privateer, buccaneer, colonial governor, Caribbean colonist, townsperson, etc. (whether famous or obscure). This involves being in garb, doing a little research on a historical person (I can help steer you in the right direction), and being able to act/improv a little. You don't learn set lines, but tell an adventure (story) or two from the character's background while you stay in character, and interact with the other characters as they tell their stories. You can suggest the person you would like to play, or I can make some suggestions for you if you don't have anyone particular in mind. Last time we had Exquemelin, Robert Searles, Charles Vane, Mary Read, John Coxon, Roche Brasiliano, L'Ollonais, Mrs. Dorothy Thomas, Raveneau de Lussan, and Anne Bonny. A few of those same people might appear again, but I certainly do want several new people.
Send me an email if you'd like to volunteer as an instructor or participant, or if you have any ideas for classes: jamaica(at)noquartergiven.net

NAVY EXCHANGES FIRE WITH
SUSPECTED PIRATES
****************************
By JIM KRANE, Associated Press WriterSat Mar 18, 2:59 PM ET
    Two U.S. Navy warships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates Saturday off the coast of Somalia, and one suspect was killed and five others were wounded, the navy said.
    Seven other suspects were taken into custody after the early-morning shootout, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.
    No sailors were wounded in the battle, which occurred at about 5:40 a.m. local time, approximately 25 nautical miles off the Somali coast in international waters.
    The battle started after the USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez, which were patrolling as part of a Dutch-led task force, spotted a 30-foot fishing boat towing smaller skiffs and prepared to board and inspect the vessels.
    The suspected pirates were holding what appeared to be rocket-propelled grenade launchers, the navy said. When the suspects began shooting, naval gunners returned fire with mounted machine guns, killing one man and igniting a fire on the vessel.
    Three suspects were seriously wounded and being treated on one of the Navy ships, Brown told   The Associated Press. A Dutch Navy medical team was en route.
    The suspects' nationalities were unknown.
    The Navy boarding teams confiscated an RPG launcher and automatic weapons, the statement said.
    The Cape St. George, a guided-missile cruiser, and Gonzalez, a guided-missile destroyer, were conducting maritime security operations in the area. They are based in Norfolk, Va.
    The International Maritime Organization has warned ships to stay away from the Somali coast because of pirate attacks, which surged to 35 last year from two in 2004.
    On March 15, the U.N. Security Council encouraged naval forces operating off Somalia to take action against suspected piracy. Pirate attacks against aid ships have hindered U.N. efforts to provide relief to the victims of a severe drought in the area.
    The pirate raids are part of the anarchy wracking Somalia, which has had no effective government since 1991, when warlords ousted a dictatorship and then turned on each other.

PS. Happy April Fools regarding the interview with Johnny Depp.  Not true! Sorry Liberté.

"If those barbarous Wretches can be moved to cut off the Nose & Ears of a Master for but correcting his own Sailors, what inhuman Treatment must I expect, should I fall within their power who have been markt as the principal Object of their Vengeance, for cutting off their arch Pirate Thatch, with all his grand Designs, & making so many of their Fraternity to swing in the open air of Virginia."
--Governor Spotswood, explaining why he refused to leave Virginia to return to England, for he was greatly afraid of being caught by pirates on the open seas.

MID MARCH PIRATE UPDATE
********************************
LORE Pirate Workshop Classes
Blackbeard Documentary tonight, and more
Rose Parade Float
Pirate Descendants needed
... and much more!

Ahoy and greetings me hearties,

It was great to see so many of you come out to the LORE workshop classes in Corona last weekend. I'd heard there were over 90 in attendance, and that was double the attendance of the previous LORE weekend, which only had one pirate class. One of our NQG readers, Richard Manalio, came all the way from Maine. Others came from Arizona, Nevada and Northern California. One of our instructors, Cascabel, flew in from Georgia.

Deb Hicks and Red Maria got everything started off with a very energetic Buccaneering 101 session. Though it was the first session, starting at 9:30 am, there was a huge attendance of probably more than 30 people.
Deb and Maria had everyone eagerly up making charts, finding words, and using their treasure jewels.

Amy Weyand followed right after with her Pirate Persona Development class.

Cascabel's two classes on black powder were packed! Of the 50 handouts we made, only a couple were left. Cascabel explained the advantages of his "wadless" method of black powder firing, and also stressed proper load charges. Most importantly, he stressed safety at every aspect. Many people told me how much they were impressed by, and learned from, Cascabel's class. For those of you who missed out of coming to LORE, his handouts comprised Part 1 and Part 2 of a series of articles to be printed in NQG. Part 1 will be in the ever-so-behind-schedule January issue (almost ready to be sent out). Part 2 will be in the March issue (about half done - so should follow close on the heels of January), and Part 3 will be in the May issue. Also, it sounds like we have a good chance of getting Cascabel to come out again to a future LORE workshop.

Across the way, at the "Games Pirates Play" session led by Michael Lampe, things got rather heated and competitive. Those pirates really take their gaming and gambling seriously. They didn't want to stop playing at the end of the session (even though they had one of the longer session times at 90 minutes). So they ran overtime all the way through the 15 minute passing time, and we had to forcibly get them to leave so we could start the next class.

Amy Weyand was back again, this time for Dockside Tavern Songs. Again, all the seats were filled, and there was a big crowd, as Amy led us through tavern and drinking several songs.

On Sunday, the Swords and Cutlasses class must have had 40 people in attendance. Daniel McGrew, of Brethren of the Coast, along with his shipmates Jules Evermore, Stormy Seas, and Remus caught everyone's
attention with a sword fight demo to start off. After a little discussion on swords and their history, the class broke into groups. Jules and Stormy took the beginners through the Great Eight drill with everyone (even a little 5 year old girl) using PVC pipe mock swords. The more advanced worked with Daniel and Remus.

Next, Michael Lampe, Cascabel, and the Rogues Cove cannon crew gave a session on cannon history, followed by several audience participants doing a dry run of the cannon drill. Then the Rogues Cove cannon crew themselves fired the cannons several times, a few times as a broadside (at the same time).

At the same time, Brant led a "Talk Like a Pirate" class with about a dozen students (he was up against stiff competition from the cannon session). He was smart enough to end his class a little early, so his students could come over to watch the cannons being fired.

After lunch, we had the "Historical Rogues Meet at the Tavern" - an exercise in improv basing characters on known pirates. This came off much better than I had dreamed - and had us all rolling in the aisles (we can never again say the name of Jack Rackham without spitting on the floor). A rousing thanks to Lin, George Pepper, Ralph Kings, Gail, Blind Geoff, Duane Matthews, Durty Lilly, Red Maria, Mitch Toles and George Rogers, with Terrie Rogers providing drinks for them all. [Those who want to participate next time, contact me early, as there was much interest in doing this again].

Gail Selinger and Alice Palacios rounded up the event with their Pirate Costuming class -- again with a standing room only crowd.

This time we had 11 pirate classes, often with two at a time. Next time (this Oct.) we plan to have a full two tracks (16 classes) of pirate content. I welcome input from those with ideas of classes they'd like to see [history of rum, with a rum tasting has already been suggested]. Also, if you would like to present a class, or participate in some way, please contact me at my email <jamaica(at)noquartergiven.net>.

[also From Ricky, th' Hawk 'o the Drive:]
Some landlubbers what don't be knowin' swashbucklers from bad folk, be usin' the movie to push their own little protest movement. Ads fer th' Blackbeard film 'ave been posted on phone kiosks across th' lower half o' New York; on these, persons unknown have bin postin' stickers with these words: "This is a picture of an Arab terrorist."
Now, Blackbeard was known to shiver one er two timbers, that I'll grant ya --- but Blackbeard was a Pirate, not a terrorist! I personally had to remove the offendin' stickers from them kiosks, to teach those unknown swabs a lesson! Obviously, there be plenty o' stupid folks in my homeport what don't know Pirates nor Pirate business. Or Pirate movies. Arrr!

BLACKBEARD'S MYSTERY SHIP (History Channel, March 20th at 10 p.m. ET/PT)
The Queen Anne's Revenge, the flagship commandeered by the legendary pirate Blackbeard, raided British supply routes to and from America until it ran aground in 1718, soon after Blackbeard had agreed to give up piracy in exchange for a pardon. But did the ship really run aground, or was this another of Blackboard's notorious schemes? Are the remains of the ship discovered off Beaufort, North Carolina really Blackbeard's vessel?

Already, several of the Port Royal Privateers are makin' plans to be in the crew that glue the flower petals on that float.

POTC BITS AND PIECES
**********************
[from one of our Disney spies:] Disney had to ransom its ship sets back from the builder. They were held captive for non-payment. It seems the film crew were not happy with the quality of the sets – but had been using them anyway. They were scheduled for a major scene on one of the final days of filming when an injunction was granted. Police sealed off the sets. Thus, a ransom payment was sent, and filming was able to continue.

AFTER ACTION REPORT
THE SACK OF ST. AUGUSTINE
****************************
[From Davis Walker, daviswalker(at)hotmail.com  , Web site: http://www.searlesbuccaneers.org/  ]:
Capt. Robert Searle’s Raid of 1668 – March 4, 2006
Last weekend saw the annual re-enactment of the Sack of St. Augustine: Capt. Robert Searle’s Raid of 1668, which took place in St. Augustine, Florida. Approximately 52 17th-century re-enactors participated in the Event, portraying English buccaneers and Spanish soldados and townsfolk. The local weather was spring at its finest – highs in the lower 70’s, with a pleasant breeze blowing off Matanzas* Bay. Over 2,000 spectators viewed the battle in Old Town San Agustin and toured the buccaneer encampment at Fountain of Youth Park ( http://www.fountainofyouthflorida.com/  ), site of the first Spanish settlement in 1565.

On Friday, March 3rd, the encampment camp was set up on the shores of the bay - a mix of canvas and rude thatching around the campfire, rather than anything of a military order. Saturday morning, March 4th, began with a breakfast of brown bread, cheese (manchego and asiago), fig cake, hardboiled eggs, fruit, almonds, coffee, tea, lemonade, and water. After general “ship’s meeting,” the rest of the morning was spent in cannon fire, musketry, and general merriment. Lunch featured moros y cristianos (“Moors and Christians,” aka black beans and rice), fire-grilled fish, olives, pickled peppers, and leftovers from breakfast. The men spent the afternoon rolling cartridges, while the women discussed 17th-century garb in the Caribbean. Julie Stevenson, of Mission San Luis ( http://www.missionsanluis.org/ ), was so good as to entertain the camp with period songs and piping throughout the day.
Due to extremely limited parking in Old Town, Searle’s officers had arranged for a charter tourist trolley train to transport the English and Spaniards alike to and from the battle. At 4:30PM, the train was packed to the gunwales with pirates, pikes, and presidiales - quite a sight to see as it rolled into the city proper.
Captain Robert Searle’s crew of English buccaneers came ashore at Artillery Lane, on the south side of the town Plaza and fired several massed volleys. Advancing down Aviles Street, through a cloud of smoke, they stormed into the Plaza near the old slave market, shouting and firing muskets and pistols. The startled Spanish townsfolk fled towards the western end of the Plaza, where presidio troops were mustered before Government House.
As the buccaneers moved into the Plaza, the Spanish soldados bravely pressed forward to meet them, while those terrified citizens who had not been captured by the privateers fled up St. George Street towards the presumed safety of the City Gates and the Santo Domingo Redoubt. The garrison troops opened fire on the buccaneers. Their sally was met by a hail of musket fire from the English marauders. As the privateers advanced, the Spanish troops fell back and rallied before Government House, under their banner of the Cross of Burgundy, while skirmishers from both sides fought hand-to-hand. One of Searle’s crew, Clunie Weber, ever tender of heart, assisted, with his boarding ax, maimed and wounded Spaniards in going where ever the Spanish go when they die. The buccaneers pressed the defenders hard, assuming the Spanish had but one cannon. To their surprise, the perfidious criollos had brought up four, which they manned to good effect. A firefight between the opposing forces ensued. Dutch Ashbaugh and Young Will Dugger were noted for their fine job in picking off Spanish cannoneers, while the corpses of Shane Miles and “Bob” Bellew provided plentiful pilfering for the drunken rabble that followed the bloodshed. After a final volley from the corsairs, the soldados retreated up St. George Street in good order, and the freebooters overran the Spanish guns.
Bearing the jolie rouge before them, the buccaneers entered the south end of St. George Street in pursuit, welcomed by the crowd with cheers of “St. George!” Assaulted by a local urchin, possibly rabid, Long Art Malestein impressed his shipmates by killing the child with his bare teeth. As they marched through the defenseless town, the corsairs sensed a cunning flanking move by the treacherous Dons and immediately stormed the Taberna del Gallo, despite a spirited defense by the tavern wenches and several tourists. Lead by Conrad Matt, the Cardiff Giant, the ensuing mêlée must be ranked on the epic level of the Siege of Holland’s Leaguer or the Raid on Mousehole – not a bottle of brandy or botijo of wine survived the carnage, whist several of the women escaped over the nearby rooftops. Refreshed and fortified (especially fortified), the buccaneers pressed on to and through the City Gates at the north end of the street. There they were met by a volley of musket fire from the Huguenot Cemetery, where the Spanish troops and townsfolk had rallied. The privateers took cover in the field to the east of the Redoubt, across from the Castillo de San Marcos (http://www.nps.gov/casa/home/home.htm  ), stowing their booty and their prisoners. Another firefight ensued between the opposing forces, with the Spanish troops and the buccaneers advancing and falling back several times, skirmishing, etc. Running out of shot, Andy Broughton fixed his plug bayonet and made good use of it against Spaniard and tourist alike. Seeing that their town was already in the hands of the English, the Dons called for a parley. Under flag of truce, they met the freebooter officers at the City Gates to discuss terms of surrender. Agreeing upon terms, and upon the release of the surviving prisoners, the town surrendered to the buccaneers. At 6PM, the freebooters gathered up their “loot” and the Spanish defenders trooped from their position, amidst applause from the viewing public.
The buccaneers and the Spanish boarded their train and returned to Fountain of Youth Park to begin the well-deserved, post-Event jollification. Smoked pork, venison, smoked turkeys, oysters (raw or roasted on the barbacoa), an enormous salamagundi, and assorted kickshaws (mangoes, almonds, finger bananas, bread, olives, limes, papayas, cheese, fresh coconut, peppers, oranges, fig cake, pineapples, dates, etc.), along with a keg of Newcastle Brown ale, wine, rum, and aqua vitae, were laid out for their return. Post-supper diversions included singing, music, and sundry japes and jests.
Next year’s annual re-enactment of the Sack of St. Augustine: Capt. Robert Searle’s Raid of 1668 will take place on March 2-4, 2007 (it always falls on the first weekend of March). RICHARD ALLEN SNELL
PRESS RELEASE
**************
Among the many craftspeople and artist that bring us the movies and television that we enjoy so much is the category of the makeup artist. Within this world of professionals there occasionally emerges a single talent that brings their art to a new level. A pioneer. An innovator. A legend.

Drawing on his knowledge of art, science, fashion and engineering, Richard Snell’s contribution to the field of make-up artistry is simply without equal. His inventions, such as colored soft contact lenses and the use of epoxy mold making materials, quickly became industry standards.

The breadth of his ability was also superlative. From high fashion to wigmaking to special makeup effects, he could do it all. And he could do it as well as many others who specialized in each of these areas. Anyone who worked with him would be astonished at his ability to innovate his way through whatever challenge might arise.

Most recently he solved the problem of taking over a hundred actors and making them appear to have rotting teeth. He figured out a way to make custom dentures for the entire cast by setting up a portable dental lab out of the country in a difficult location. One of so many, many examples. This industry is now filled with fellow make-up artists that have benefited from the selfless sharing of all of his discoveries.

While on location, on Feb 21, Richard passed away in his sleep of natural causes. He was 50 years old. He is survived by his wife and 5-month-old twin daughters.

The tragedy is made heavier by the fact Richard went into very deep debt in order to bring his recent children into this world. Harder still by the lack of any life insurance that we know of. A week ago there was the bright beginnings of a happy family. Now, the wife and children of someone who spent his life sharing himself so unselfishly, faces enormous financial difficulties compounded with unimaginable grief.

Any help would be so appreciated.

If you go make a donation you need to tell the bank the account number. It is #2118304795 at any Wells Fargo Bank. Make checks out to Richard Alan Snell Memorial Fund. You can also send checks to 23233 N. Pima Rd., Suite 113, PMB 155, Scottsdale, Az, 85255. Many people asked how they could help that is why we set up this fund. There is no obligation to donate, only do so if you can afford it, and are comfortable doing it. Thank you all.

I heard that Jennifer Love Hewitt, (The Ghost Whisperer), is doing a story on my brother on 'Extra' either next Monday, or Tuesday. If you google 'Richard Snell'-makeup artist you can see what he was known for, and how talented he was.

Shantell, his wife, is having trouble with the Bahamas...they don't want to release the body without an autopsy, can't do an autopsy without medical records, the US won't give up the medical records (HIPAA), without a death certificate, can't get a death certificate without an autopsy, so round and round we go.

Lessons learned: Make sure you have signed the paper at your doctors office stating that besides yourself, a loved one can access your medical records.

Please get your wills, trusts, and life insurance paperwork done for the sake of those you leave behind. We never know when the unexpected can happen. It's the best gift you can give anyone.

Hi Shantell,
I am the contact lens tech for this show. I worked in the same trailer as Richard, and my husband has known him for 20years. Richard made everyone laugh every day, had so many wonderful stories, and shared his love for you and your babies with us. He was so happy and proud.
Here's what I sent to Karen and all of the photos I took. There are a few shots that are dark, but when you print them out, they will show more. My heart goes out to you and your families. What a special, and magnificent husband Richard was. Everyone was so touched by him. We hope to meet you someday.

Connie,

Thank you so much for the note and picture regarding Richard's service. We had a vigil at the Biggs' house this afternoon and I printed out your message - we put one on the fridge for everyone to see, and I gave another copy to his wife Shantell - she hadn't heard anything about it yet and was very grateful. So was everyone else there. We are all writing letters to his children - Morgan and Macallan - so they will know him as much as possible as they grow up. I'm collecting the letters, and so is someone else - not sure of her name - but she knows I'll have letters too - and however long it takes to collect them - she said even if it was a year, once she and I had them all she was going to bind them in a book. Spread the word - and let people know they can send their letters care of me if they wish to:

Hope to see you soon.
