Heads up me lads and lasses,

We hope you all have had, and still are having, a wonderful holiday season, whatever special holiday it is you celebrate. We hope all your crew has returned to the home anchorage to break bread and share booty together, and help to ring in the New Year together. Please keep in mind all those ravaged by various disasters this year, and remember you have a few more days to make charitable contributions that will deduct from your taxes paid to the king for this year.

Exciting news for California pirates ... Last week we were invited to a rehearsal showing of the new Pirates Dinner Adventure in Buena Park, CA. We heartily enjoyed ourselves and had a great time. We have seen the original show in Orlando, FL, and thought this show was better, tighter, less circus-like, and more theatrical. It is a show the whole crew can enjoy, from the youngest powder monkeys (though perhaps the very youngest might be a little frightened by the cannon blasts) to the oldest mates. We arrived early, as soon as the doors opened. They provided wonderful appetizers whet our appetites, and then whetted our desires for excitement with a dramatic pre-show. The actual show and dinner were excellent and we heartily recommend it. Look for a full review in the next issue of No Quarter Given. (coming soon)

Though the article below states the opening date for PDA as January 12, we've been told their actual opening date was December 27. You might want to gather yer crew. Group rates for the PDA start at a minimum of 15 persons. Prices for group rates run: $44.00 - $48.50 including tax and gratuity depending on the number of the group. The non-group price per person, including tax and gratuity is: $56.95 They will allow pirates to attend in costume and carry weapons as long as the pistols are empty and swords and knives are peace tied. Read below for more details.

PIRATES DINNER ADVENTURE HAS OPENED IN BUENA PARK, CA
*******************************
Tuesday, December 20, 2005
A pirate's life in new Buena Park dinner theater calls for stunt work, sword fighting and aerial acts.
By MICHELE HIMMELBERG
The Orange County Register
Wanted: Pirates in Orange County. No pillaging on the high surf or downloading illegal copies. Must be able to sing, dance or duel with a sword while being ogled by tourists. Will teach shanghai tricks.
If that's the life for you, the producers of Pirate's Dinner Adventure in Buena Park would like to hear your most visceral "Aargh!" when they hold auditions in January.
The show, a mix of special effects, high action and interactive storytelling, officially opens Jan. 12. Already it has attracted aerialists from Las Vegas, stunt experts from Hollywood and local entertainers.
"As soon as anyone sees it, they want to do it," said T.J. Lanahan, who directs the original show in Orlando, Fla. "But it's not as easy as it looks."
The Orlando cast will open Pirate's Dinner Adventure here until a local crew is set. The production opened in Orlando in 1996 and has been so successful that creators Ramon and Antonio Riba reproduced the experience in Southern California.
One reason they chose this region is for its talent pool, brimming with entertainers who need to be close to Hollywood. In between film jobs they often work on theater productions such as Pirate's Dinner Adventure, where the pay starts at $80 per show.
The script calls for rogues, a princess and buccaneers. But serious applicants need a résumé with a specialized skill - in falling, acrobatics or even the martial arts.
"You must be very good at one thing," said Imre Baross, the show's operational and artistic director. "Then we can teach you the other parts."
Baross, a flying-trapeze artist in his native Hungary who performed the difficult "triple," has been a showman since age 10 with parts in European circus troupes, theater and films. Baross and Lanahan work together to select the cast, but they must pass the Baross test.
He immediately sends pirate candidates up the 10-meter tower for a jump. "If I see their knees shaking, I say, 'OK, come down. Go home.'"
The show's producers plan to hire roughly 40 performers, along with the 100-plus servers, cooks, stagehands and laundry experts that are already on board.
One of the most startling stunts in the show is the moon walk. The mysterious Gypsy character appears magically in the pre-show area and walks – upside down – on the ceiling. Actually, she swings her feet, one at a time, through straps that hang from the ceiling. Baross likens the dangerous-looking act to the rhythm of monkeys swinging on lines in the jungle, letting go of one rope just as it loses momentum and reaching instantly for the next one.
Becky Ohmes has been practicing the moon walk for several weeks. She and her husband, Marque, who plays the green pirate, also do an aerial act in the show. They have years of gymnastics and dance training, and they do strength training five days a week to perform their tricks.
In the aerial act, they focus on each other at all times to maintain awareness of where they are in the air. In the moon walk, Becky focuses solely on the loops for her feet.
"You have to make sure you take your foot out at the peak of the arch and keep the swing going," she said. "It's all about trusting yourself, knowing the loop can hold you."
A safety loop fits around her arm as a precaution.
"I enjoy aerial work because there's always an element of challenge to it," Becky said. "No matter how long you've done a trick, you can never afford to be complacent."
The pirate crew also must have the endurance to perform a two-hour show that includes 80 minutes of full action. That's longer and more intense than the live shows typically produced at Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. The show's tricks, often accompanied by cannon blasts, are launched from ropes, platforms and a floating trampoline hidden in the main stage - a 46-foot-long Spanish galleon.
Tumurhuyag Tugsuu, who plays the yellow pirate, is a sword fighter. He started off as a ballet dancer in Mongolia, moving later to troupes in New York City and New Jersey. He danced in Disney productions in Orlando, including Beauty and the Beast, but knew he wanted to be a pirate once he saw this show.
The pirates have speaking lines, however, and Tugsuu has a heavy accent. He worked on his English for almost a year before trying out, but even then nobody could understand his lines.
When Baross watched him leap and twirl, however, he saw a unique combination of grace and force that was perfect for a pirate.
"He was so talented I had to have him in my show," Baross said.
Christian Stokes, who landed a bounty hunter role, has worked for 10 years to master the art of high falls. He's also the stunt coordinator at Knott's Berry Farm.
"We're like kids out here," he said of the cast. "We get to swing again and get paid for it."
But diving head-first from a 10-foot platform is also dangerous.
Stunt performers start with short falls, practicing from the kneeling position and working up with ladders. As they gain confidence, they climb higher, always using the same technique.
"When I fall, I find a mark on the mat to see where I' m going to hit," Stokes said. "I keep my eyes on that spot all the way down. It's a nerve game. If you flip too soon, you under-rotate. Go too late and you over-rotate."
Either way, it's a disaster.
Or, as Baross said: "You have to make the most amazing things look very easy, or it's not a show And you can make a mistake only once."

THE SEA ROVER'S PRACTICE
Add to yer Pirate Library ... Special Deal
********************************
In the Sept. issue of NQG we reviewed a wonderful new book entitled "The Sea Rover's Practice", by Benerson Little, all about the pirates' tactics and techniques. John Richard Stephens of www.DeadMenTellNoTales.com  thought it quite a good book too. He wrote:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's two chapters on the Tools of the Trade, one on Giving Chase, another on sacking towns and cities, and an interesting one called "Sending a Smoker and Catching a Tartar: More Stratagems at Sea", among others. I think this one will be required reading for all reenactors, so we've decided to give a special 40% discount to anyone who orders it and mentions No Quarter Given. SOME PIRATES IN PARADISE REPORTS
************************************
[From Daniel James:] Key West was fun but pretty quiet. We were there with ~50 of our players from Puzzle Pirates and, at least some of the time, we were pretty much 'the party' at Fort Taylor etc. It was still great fun and a fantastic location for some piratey action!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[From Julie McEnroe, event director:] We did have lots of pirates attend... Key West is bouncing back from Wilma. We had lots of damage, but our island is really made up of a lot of resilient individuals and though everyone took huge financial losses, things seem to be coming back to normal....the fort looked absolutely outstanding...the Pirate Pub was over the top!

POTC FILMING NEWS
********************
Because of delays due to various hurricanes, filming on PotC 2 and 3 was scheduled to continue right through the Thanksgiving holidays. But we heard that Johnny Depp "conveniently" came down with the "flu", so all the film crew was able to go home for Thanksgiving. [thanks to Louie, and Herself]

MALLORY AND MCCALL TRY TO GET A CD RECORDING
****************************
Those of you in Southern California might have heard Mallory and McCall performing at one of the local Renaissance or Pirate Festivals. They are a husband and wife musical group. They have an eclectic repertoire, but it includes many pirate selections. At pirate and renfaires, they dress as pirates, and some of their selections include crowd favorites of "The Pirate King", "The Derelict" and "Wet Pirate Bones". He sings, and she sings and plays melodeon (small portable foot-powered organ). They are sometimes joined by others of their crew. We have encouraged them for years to record a CD, and now they are working on it, but they need a little help. Here's your opportunity to assist some very deserving musicians. See the announcement below for details:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are offering charter membership in the "Let’s Get Mallory & McCall’s CD Recorded" project. Charter members will be entitled to receive a preview self-published, guaranteed-home-made songbook (words and music) for the upcoming (we hope) CD, which has a working title of "And Then We Wrote–And Rewrote" This will be a collection of both original and adapted songs we have written through the years. Our originals will include, among others, This is My Night to Howl (the Werewolf’s song), Aces & Eights (the Death of James Butler Hickock), and That Old Fashioned Mummy of Mine (in honor of King Tut’s visits in 1978 and 2005).
The special material we have put together for our act by re-writing old songs will include, among others, our versions of The Derelict (15 Men on the Dead Man’s Chest), Wet Pirate Bones (from Dry Bones), and Cats on the Rooftops-Catty Version. We may even throw in some of Mallory’s evocative poetry. Most of the songs are quirky, funny and just fun. Soon (hopefully) the proto-CD will follow, and if you ask, you will be given a free copy of both the booklet and the CD when (and, we have to say, if) they happen. Charter membership in the LGM&McCDR Project is a minimum donation of $15.
If you want to help the LGM&McCDR Project, send a check or money order payable to Mallory Geller
Blackbeard's Last Supper
Pirate Queen -- the Musical
Somalian Pirates
Hawaiian Chieftain
International Pirate Day
Pirate Tales and Beyond
... and much more
Heads up me buckos,
We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving on Thursday. But more importantly, today is the anniversary of the death of the Archpyrate Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard. See below for a celebration of his last supper.
Just an update status note: the September issue of No Quarter Given is almost completed, and I have a good start on the November issue. September should be sent out sometime next week, and the November issue should follow soon after. My most humble apologies to all of you who are subscribers to the magazine version of No Quarter Given -- I was totally unprepared for how much time my current course of studies for a Teacher's Credential would involve (I do believe, however, I am getting straight A's so far). I will use the Thanksgiving Weekend, and the Winter Holiday Break to catch up, and also get a good start on the Janaury issue as well.
We must also apologize NQG will not be making an appearance at the Pirates in Paradise Festival next week. My studies prevented me from taking so much time off, but Capt. MacLeod had been planning to go. He was going to voyage overland to Key West with a couple of shipmates, but unforeseen circumstances just learned about yesterday will prevent him from attending as well. We will miss all our pirate friends from far flung waters, but hope you all have a great time in Key West this year. http://www.piratesinparadise.com/
PIRATE QUEEN THE MUSICAL
***************************
http://www.thepiratequeen.com/
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The biggest Broadway news of the week comes from the creators of "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon," Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg.
They have a major musical in the wings about a real-life female pirateer named Grace O'Malley, circa 1530-1606, called "The Pirate Queen." It'll world premiere in Chicago next October 3, then open in New York before the end of the 2006-07 season.
This is the first Boublil-Schonberg show with an American creative and design team; Frank Galati directs, choreography is by Mark Dandy. It'll also have a cast of 40, and no casting has yet been set.
SOMALIAN PIRATES
********************
The Pirates of Somalia have been very active of late, but really came to the notice of the news when recently a luxury liner ship captain was able to fend off an attack. Here's a brief summary from the BBC and AP:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday, November 6, 2005. 7:08am (AEDT)
CRUISE SHIP REPELS GUN-TOTING PIRATES
Pirates have fired on a cruise ship carrying hundreds of European and American tourists off the coast of Somalia.
The ship, which was carrying about 300 passengers and crew, was about 100 miles off the coast of Somalia, in an area notorious for pirate activity.
Passengers say they woke up to the sound of shots, as pirates in at least two speed boats fired a rocket-propelled grenade and machine guns at the ship.
The ship's operator say the crew immediately initiated a trained response - they used a loud acoustic "bang" to repel the attackers.
Passengers were asked to stay below decks because of the danger from gunfire.
One crew member suffered minor injuries from flying debris, but there were no other casualties.

Pirate Attack Repelled by Cruise Ship Crew
By JENNIFER KAY, Associated Press Writer
Sat Nov 5, 4:08 PM ET
MIAMI - Pirates fired a rocket-propelled grenade and machine guns Saturday in an attack on a luxury cruise liner off the east African coast, the vessel's owners said.
Two armed boats approached the Seabourn Spirit about 100 miles off the coast of Somalia and fired as the boats' occupants attempted to get onboard, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corp.
The ship outran them and changed its course.
"Our suspicion at this time is that the motive was theft," Good said, adding that the crew had been trained for "various scenarios, including people trying to get on the ship that you don't want on the ship." The attackers never got close enough to board the Spirit, but one member of the 161-person crew was injured by shrapnel, said Debrah Natansohn, president of the cruise line.
Press Association, the British news agency, said passengers awoke to the sound of gunfire as two 25-foot inflatable boats approached the liner. Edith Laird of Seattle, who was traveling on the ship with her daughter and a friend, told British Broadcasting Corp. TV in an e-mail that her daughter saw the pirates out of their window.
"There were at least three rocket-propelled grenades that hit the ship, one in a state room," Laird wrote. "We had no idea that this ship could move as fast as it did and (the captain) did his best to run down the pirates."
The vessel's 151 passengers, mostly Americans with some Australians and Europeans, were gathered in a lounge for their safety, Good said. None were injured.
The Spirit had been bound for Mombasa, Kenya, at the end of a 16-day voyage from Alexandria, Egypt. It was expected to reach the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean on Monday, and then continue on its previous schedule to Singapore, company officials said.
The 10,000-ton cruise ship, registered in the Bahamas, sustained minor damage, Good said. "They took some fire, but it's safe to sail," he said.
Piracy along the Somalia coast is common — several ships a month are attacked or hijacked, with valuables stolen and crews held for ransom. Somalia's 1,880-mile coastline is Africa's longest, and the country has had no effective central government since opposition leaders ousted dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. They then turned on each other, transforming
this nation of 7 million into a patchwork of battling fiefdoms ruled by heavily armed militias.

Passengers Describe Thwarted Pirate Attack
'I Could Tell the Guy Firing the Bazooka Was Smiling'
By BISHR EL-TOUNI, AP
MAHE, Seychelles (Nov. 7) - Pirates who attacked a cruise ship off the coast of Somalia grinned as they aimed grenade-launchers and machine guns at the deck and staterooms, some passengers said Monday, recounting the ordeal after safely docking in this Indian Ocean archipelago.
The ship escaped by shifting to high speed and changing course, and the cruise line said Monday the crew also used a sonic weapon, which blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam, as it tried to ward off the attack.
"I tell you, it was a very frightening experience," Charles Supple, of Fiddletown, Calif., said by phone.
The retired physician and World War II veteran said he started to take a photograph of a pirate craft, and "the man with the bazooka aimed it right at me and I saw a big flash.
"Needless to say, I dropped the camera and dived. The grenade struck two decks above and about four rooms further forward," he said. "I could tell the guy firing the bazooka was smiling."
The Seabourn Spirit had been bound for Kenya when it was attacked by pirates armed with grenade launchers and machine guns on Saturday about 100 miles off Somalia's lawless coast.
The sonic device that helped ward off the attack, known as a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, is a so-called "non-lethal weapon" developed for the military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching U.S. warships. Makers of the device compare its shrill tone to that of smoke detectors, only much louder.
The gunmen never got close enough to board the cruise ship, but one member of the 161-person crew was injured by shrapnel, according to the Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corp.
Relieved holiday-makers praised the ship's captain for foiling the attack, but some said they were lucky to escape with their lives.
A woman survived an explosion in her stateroom simply because she was taking a bath at the time. Others flung themselves to the floor to avoid bullets that were zipping through the ship, Charles Forsdick, of Durban, South Africa, told Associated Press Television News.
Bob Meagher of Sydney, Australia, said he climbed out of bed and went to the door of his cabin shortly before 6 a.m. after hearing a commotion outside.
"I saw a white-hulled boat with men in it waving various things and shooting at the ship -- at that stage it appeared to be rifle fire," he told Australian radio.
"My wife said, 'Look, they're loading a bazooka,' which we later discovered was called an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) launcher."
"There was a flash of flame and then a huge boom -- a terrible boom sound," he said, adding the grenade hit about 10 feet from where they were.
The liner had been at the end of a 16-day voyage from Alexandria, Egypt.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Monday that the attackers might have been terrorists. Others said the attack bore the hallmarks of pirates who have become increasingly active off Somalia, which has no navy and has not had an effective central government since 1991.
AP Business Writer John Pain contributed to this report from Miami.

HAWAIIAN CHIEFTAIN
*********************
Recently, the "Hawaiian Cheiftain" was bought and taken to the East Coast and renamed. Those of us who had sailed upon her in many a sea battle, were very sad to see her go. Then many things went sour, and now the foundation behind the "Lady Washington", the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (GHHSA) has rescued her. They bought her, and are bringing her back to the West Coast. She needed a lot of fixing up. This means there is now a greater need for crew and for financial support at the GHHSA. For more details see the press release below, and the accounts on the home page of: http://ladywashington.org/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PRESS RELEASE from Capt Les Bolton, Exec. Director of GHHSA:
November 10, 2005
13:00 EST the Tall Ship Hawaiian Chieftain departed the dock in Greenport, New York bound for San Diego, California via the Panama Canal. After entering the Pacific Ocean she will sail north to rendezvous with the Tall Ship Lady Washington in Southern California. The two ships will then sail in company northbound to Hawaiian Chieftain’s new homeport in Westport, Washington.
Tonight the Hawaiian Chieftain will anchor in Little Neck Bay, New York and tomorrow morning she will proceed through Hell’s Gate with the ebbing tide. After a salute to friends and fellow sailors at South Street Seaport, they will set a course past Liberty Island for the open sea.
Although her next scheduled port of call is Miami, weather on the East Coast may cause our ship’s Captain to deviate from the plan for the safety of our ship and crew.
Once in Miami they will fuel up, take on provisions and clear outbound customs for the downwind run through the Windward Passage to Panama.
While in Miami the ship will also receive a new ship’s computer and satellite phone which will ensure daily e-mail updates of the voyage progress. As we did with the Lady Washington on her return from the Caribbean, we will forward these reports along with other information, photos, weather and related website information (You can watch online as the ship travels through the Panama Canal!).
If you would like to receive the Hawaiian Chieftain’s Ship’s Log, just send an e-mail to our Marine Operations Manager, Bob Kennedy at ghhsabob"AT" comcast.net  and on the subject line write Subscribe HAWAIIAN CHIEFTAIN log.
Those of you who knew the Hawaiian Cheiftain before she left our Pacific Coast waters, and her captain Ian McIntyre, will enjoy this.
INTERNATIONAL PIRATE DAY
***************************
A student, Joe Birch, from Leeds, England has declared Nov.4 as International Pirate Day. Apparently this is meant as an excuse to have a pirate, dress and talk like a pirate, and drink lots of rum. Reports say it caught on elsewhere, mostly among college students, and there were several parties.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[From Cap'n Slappy of the Talk Like a Pirate Day guys:] As for this NEW pirate day … If our brave friend wants to try to establish a second “Pirate Day” – more power to him! Ours has evolved from just talking like pirates to talking and dressing like pirates to talking, dressing and getting blottoed like pirates! We think the pirate community has embraced September 19th as Their Holiday ...

[From Capt. Tucker:]
Jamaica, saw Scurvy's little note about the pirate skeleton doll at Walgreens that talks and sings. Well, I have to confess that when I saw this little guy at the drug store a couple of weeks ago, I stood there and played with it til the batteries went dead! The store managment were not pleased with this behaviour and I had to flee the authorities, plus I did not get the doll either! Arrrhh!

Hawaiian Chieftain Returns to the West Coast

Heads up me buckos,

Many of you who are subscribers have been inquiring regarding the whereabouts of the September issue of No Quarter Given. Well... the Spanish have been conducting a lot of raids on us of late, and most of our efforts have gone into fighting them off. So the September issue is running much later than I hoped. Very late indeed. My deepest apologies to those of you who are subscribers. But it should be along shortly - hopefully next week. Expect the November issue to be sent out over a month late as well (I expect to have a respite in my duties during December when I plan to make a serious dent in catching up). Then I hope to be able to be more on time with the January issue.

Meanwhile, let me take a little time out from getting the issue ready, and give you some of the latest news of a piratical bent.

WILMA LEFT HER MARK
***********************
[Capt. Roberts of Marooned, from Naples, FL:]
By St. Elmo's fiery balls that was a doozy of a storm! Marco Island and Everglades city (just south of us) took the direct hit, but we in Naples got the worst of the winds at landfall (measuring up to 125 mph at the Collier County Emergency Management Center). My wife and I shuttered up the house, hunkered down with the cats and rode it out. I actually had to run out into the storm twice (once after each tornado warning actually) to pull in storm shutters that had come loose and were threatening to come through the windows. The aftermath is pretty impressive. They're saying a billion in damages here in Collier county, most of it so widespread that it will fall underneath the insurance deductibles.
Mostly though? Wilma has been a big inconvenience for most people. That's it. There are those who took major hits, and my heart does go out to them, but the majority of people in Naples came through this remarkably well. I only know of two deaths during the storm, and one was of natural causes.
As for our home? Our screen repairman was here today and he'll be back tomorrow (word of advice, when a storm is coming call repairmen BEFORE the storm to get an appointment, canceling is easier than getting a quick appointment after the storm) and we'll be doing a lot of new landscaping. That's it. The house is fine, we're fine and we got power back yesterday.

[From Rianna aka Scarlotte the Harlotte, The Pyrates of Tortuga Florida Keys]:
Just an update for you in South Florida and the Keys. It was pretty much mass devastation. I've heard briefly from friends in West Palm Beach and Marathon via cell phone. West Palm and Ft. Lauderdale look like Ground Zero, as does Marathon and Key West. Businesses and trailer parks on the Gulf side of the Keys were hit hard, taking on significant damage, some being totally destroyed. On top of businesses taking a hit, vehicles were flooded. Some places took on 4-5 feet of water, especially in Key West. I spoke with Chuck Priest (Captain Barracuda) yesterday morning, and he told me that his truck is a total loss. He and his family had about 2 feet of water in their house. All the vehicles on the street became "boats." He said the only thing that stopped his truck from coming in through the glass sliding doors was the tires getting stuck on the door track. All this damage from the back side of the storm. It had already passed the Keys when the Gulf started coming up in people's yards.
Since I work for one of the papers in Marathon, I'll have some pictures soon from the devastation at least in the Middle Keys. I haven't heard much from anyone else, but those that I did hear from said the water was waist deep in some places, and not much lower in others as the storm subsided.
As I hear things I'll pass them on to keep you informed. Thank goodness the cold front came through. Maybe that's the last that Florida will see for a while.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[From Don Maitz:] I hope our friends in Key West are ok as they got the southern eye wall and that packed the most punch as far as wind force. There was 5 ft. of flooding in parts of Key West but I do not know which parts. What I saw on TV, Key Largo wasn't too bad. No boats lifted out of the water and thrown into buildings like some storms have done.
PIRATES IN PARADISE
STILL ON SCHEDULE AFTER WILMA
*********************************
[From Julie McEnroe, director of the Pirates in Paradise festival:]
Hi Christine, we are A OK here in Key West. The Wolf (thanks to the best crew in the world) was one of only 6 ships left standing in the boatyard and had no damage. There was lots of flooding (not in my temporary home) and over 60 % of the island has at least a foot of water. Many of the waterfront resorts sustained serious damage, but they are all resilient and should be back in operation shortly. We are advising everyone with lodging reservations [for Pirates in Paradise] to confirm with their hotel. Everything is still on for the festival. In fact, Fred Willard confirmed that they are still coming and he will be attending the festival on Saturday, December 3 to shoot footage for his new Travel Channel Show, Fred Does Festivals.
FANTASY FEST
**************
Hurricane Wilma forced the Key West Fantasy Fest (sort of their version of Mardi Gras, only usually done around Halloween) to be postponed. It will be the week following Pirates in Paradise (Dec. 7 through Dec. 11). And the parade on Saturday, Dec.10, is headed up by a pirate, ... Captain Morgan. So those of you who can, you might want to extend your visit in Key West a little longer, and take in this festival as well.
POTC 2/3 UPDATE
****************
[From Captain Jackie, http://www.ohjohnny.net  :]
Filming for Pirates of the Caribbean had resumed in the Caribbean in late Sept. The Black Pearl has been outfitted with working cannons, her gunports open, and they fire in sequence. You can see photos and a video of it at: http://www.the-bahama-islands.com/piratesofcaribbean.html
Most of the filming is now taking place around Grand Bahama Island, and in the 'tank' they constructed for water shoots.
Filming for POTC2/3 was suspended two weeks ago due to the threat of hurricane Wilma. The cast and crew were flown from the area. [Ed. note: Our friend on the sailing crew, Louie Lambie, was home for just a few days, but returned right away]
There are now several more ships involved in the filming, and they are doing predominately sea shots. The Chinese pirates for 3 are also now filming, so they are doing 1/4th POTC2 and 3/4's POTC3 at this time.
For spoilers, go to: http://www.ohjohnny.net/potc2/rumorscentral.html
Many of Jack's crew, including Martin Klebba, will have action figures. Martin was in the first movie as the little person on Jack's crew. Also back is Gibbs. For the latests news keep an eye on my News & Rumors pages: http://www.ohjohnny.net/potc2/potc2new28.html
On a side note: Johnny Depp is being honored with a Tribute by AFI on November 11th, with a premier screening of his newest film, "The Libertine" that night.
RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN IN "BLACKBEARD"
Portrays the corrupt Governor Eden
****************************************
This is quite exciting -- a 4 hour mini-series for Hallmark, to air next June (just before PotC 2 comes out) -- finally a pirate movie (well, mini-series actually) based somewhat on the actual history (we hope). They advertise it as being a "slightly fictionalized take on the tales of the pirate Blackbeard." ANOTHER TALL SHIP IN GRAYS HARBOR
***************************************
[From Capt. Les Bolton -- Oct. 28, 2005:] When Lady Washington, the Tall Ship Ambassador for the State of Washington, sails back into her homeport of Grays Harbor next spring, she will be sailing in good company. Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, the non-profit organization in Aberdeen that owns and operates Lady Washington has just expanded their fleet of vessels with the purchase of the 103-foot Tall Ship Hawaiian Chieftain. The Hawaiian Chieftain, is currently located in Massachusetts and will be spending the next week preparing for the 6,000 mile voyage back to the west coast. Current plans call for her to rendezvous with Lady Washington in San Diego, California in early January. Sailing up the coast in the spring, the ships will be visiting Columbia River ports in May and early June, and sailing home over the Grays Harborne through September Hawaiian Chieftain will be sailing daily from the Islander Resort in Westport.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE
MONSTER HOUSE PIRATE VERSION?
********************************
Seems there's been a keelhauling at the Monster House compound. Heard there's been either a mass mutiny, or the crew's been disbanded. My contact for the Pirate Version of the Monser House is not replying to me, so he may no longer be there. I was originally told the Pirate Monster House would air Oct. 11, but that did not happen. I'm not sure when it is to appear now. Anyone with any news, send it our way, and I'll share with the crew.
[From Black Hearted Pearl}:"Perhaps we could start bombarding the Discovery channel website with requests to see the Monster House "Pirate House" edition. I have been a fan of Damon Stern's Monster House from the beginning. I think Monster House is feeling the pressure from Extreme Makeover Home Edition. In my mind, these are two totally different shows. However, it has become more difficult to catch Monster House and I even have my DVR set to catch them all. There's a chance it may never be aired unless we band together, as pirates do, and hold a sword to Discovery Channel's throat.Here is the contact information for Monster House through Original Productions.Monster House Contact http://www.monsterhouse.tv/contactus.htm
AHOY ALL HANDS!
******************
[From Capt. Thomas Tucker, Heartofoakhmrg"AT" aol.com  ]:
As some of you have heard I'll be filming at Ft. King George this next weekend, Nov. 12 and the question has come up, "What am I paying?"
Bill Marquis has these really cool t-shirts that he sells, they have a period cartoon of militia [[early 1800s] with some popping jay officer prancing around out in front and the caption reads, "I FILM FOR FOOD"!
Well, this is worse, if you help me out, you will be filming for nothing,.... except to help me create a historically intelligent documentary about the Rev. War. Without volunteer help, I cant make this film. That is it.
But, the results of finishing this film will be the ability to get funding for future projects. and this will enable me to go and start a whole new era in historical film making.
... On the weekend of Nov. 12th at FKG, no one at the site is expected or should feel obligated to help out, but those who want to are welcome and I will really appreciate any help I can get.
THE MODERN-DAY TRAFALGAR
************************
[found making the rounds of late, in *honor* of the recent Trafalgar Bicentennial]
Nelson: "Order the signal, Hardy."
Hardy: "Aye, sir."
Nelson: "Hold on...... that's not what I dictated to the signal officer. What's the meaning of this?"
Hardy: "Sorry sir?"
Nelson (reading aloud): "England expects every person to do his duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability". ".......What gobbledygook is this?"
Hardy: "Admiralty policy, I'm afraid, sir. We're an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job getting 'England' past the censors, lest it be considered racist."
Nelson: "Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco."
Hardy: "Sorry sir. All naval vessels have been designated smoke-free working environments."
Nelson: "In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the main brace to steel the men before battle."
Hardy: "The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. It's part of the Government's policy on binge drinking."
Nelson: "Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on with it....full speed ahead."
Hardy: "I think you'll find that there's a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water."
Nelson: "Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow's nest please."
Hardy: "That won't be possible, sir."
Nelson: "What?"
Hardy: "Health and safety have closed the crow's nest, sir. No harness. And they said that rope ladder doesn't meet regulations.They won't let anyone up there until a proper scaffolding can be erected."
Nelson: "Then get me the ship's carpenter without delay, Hardy."
Hardy: "He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the fo'c'sle,Admiral."
Nelson: "Wheelchair access? I've never heard anything so absurd."
Hardy: "Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled."
Nelson: "Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card."
Hardy: "Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under- represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency."
Nelson: "Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons."
Hardy: "A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and safety won't let the crew up the rigging without hard hats. And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt - haven't you seen the adverts?"
Nelson: "I've never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy."
Hardy: "The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral."
Nelson: "What? This is mutiny."
Hardy: "It's not that, sir. It's just that they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There's a couple of legal-aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks."
Nelson: "Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?"
Hardy: "Actually, sir, we're not."
Nelson: "We're not?"
Hardy: "No, sir. The Frenchies and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation."
Nelson: "But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil."
Hardy: "I wouldn't let the ship's diversity coordinator hear you saying that sir. You'll be up on disciplinary."
Nelson: "You must consider every man an enemy, who speaks ill of your King."
Hardy: "Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it's the rules. It could save your life"
Nelson: "Don't tell me - health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?"
Hardy: As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And there's a ban on corporal punishment."
Nelson: "What about sodomy?"
Hardy: "I believe that is now legal, sir."
Nelson: "In that case ...kiss me, Hardy.
and more.....
Lads and lasses,
Hurricane Rita threaded the needle between Key West and Cuba, and pretty much spared Key West. We talked to Julie McEnroe (Pirates in Paradise director) and Capt. Finbar while they hunkered down in Key West, in a strong building on the lee side of the island. We talked again today. They are fine, other than having lost power for some time. The Schooner Wolf was secured, and rode through fine. But their houseboat home is a goner. Thankfully, they had gotten all their belongings off of it ahead of the storm, and they had only been renting it. They already have another place to stay, so things are fine with them.
Now, for the rest of you in Rita's sights (now a Cat. 5, second this season) -- if you are preparing to evacuate, and need a place to stay, you might call or email us. We can try to match you up with others who are willing to take in fellow pirates.
If you are further inland, and willing to shelter some pirates for a few days, let us know. We can try to match up offers and needs. Email us at: jamaica"AT" noquartergiven.net
For the rest of you, we still encourage you all to donate to the storm victims in general. Last email we included a letter with a long list of places to donate. We had more input on one charity included on that list:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Christine: OPERATION BLESSING is really Pat Robertson's company, he's the one who said we should assassinate the President of Venezuela. He does not need Katrina donations! Let his followers donate money to him. It is a national scandal that his company is posted on a federal website.
Irene
[Checking on the Operation Blessing website shows Irene is right - it is an organization under Pat Robertson's umbrella]

KATRINA REPLIES

Avast Jamaica Rose....
I've had the opportunity to visit New Orleans several years ago, myself What a fantastic city it was!!! I even ate at all those places you mentioned in the newsletter: The Cafe Du Monde...loved those beignets (yummy!!).. Don't forget the chicory coffee!!!!!!!!!! Another yummy!!!!! .The Court of Two Sisters...again ..yummy!! Hopefully New Orleans can recover from this terrible tragedy and be the beautiful city it once was before!!!

Aye, 'twas great to hear from me old mate Belush!
We ARE currently in Alabama, but only until Friday: then we set sail for Memphis, where my naval base is setting up temporary facilities.
As to who helped us: NOBODY but our own neighbors, while in New Orleans. The Red Cross has been a big help to us and to others, once we were evacuated. I have heard that the local Salvation Army had donated itself "out" before we got here.
As far as whether the RC shifts funds to other situations; I have no idea. But Katrina IS going to totally tap out everyone - including the federal government; and there will still be many emergencies to prepare for . (Hurricane Rita, already).

NQG - TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY UPDATE
Katrina Updates
Pirates Helping Pirates

Izabel Update
The Buccaneers DVD
... and more

Lads and lasses,

Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day! We congratulate the TLAPD guys, Chumbucket and Cap'n Slappy, on another anniversary of their great holiday invention. Hope you all had a great day. Look for a review of the Pirate Guys' new book "Pirattitude" in the Sept. issue of No Quarter Given (coming out a little late - in fact it hasn't yet been finished). Meanwhile, see a list of Songs to Play on Talk Like a Pirate Day. Go to: http://www.topfive.com  , then go to the archives for Sept. 16, 2005.

While Hurricane Rita bears down on Florida, we hope all of you will be safe and sound if/when she makes landfall. Meanwhile, below are several posts and reports about Katrina:

KATRINA UPDATES
******************
[From Kathleen Marshall, Aug. 31, 2005:] Our son, Peter, has been back on Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 since October. They were in Mobile from Jan. to April and Grand Bahama ever since. They only were brushed by the storm [Katrina] but it certainly roused them from their hotel rooms at 3:15 am to rush to the sets to try and minimize /assess on going damage with high winds, rain, flying trees and lines including a 2 1/2" hawser line snapped. Fortunately the sets didn't suffer severe damage but the filming tank filled with sand!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[From Sir John Killigrew, Aug. 31, 2005:] A wee bit o' information, if ye please: I say this as a holder of a Red Cross 5-year pin, including service in L.A. during riots, fires, floods, and the Northridge Earthquake. Any money contributed to the Red Cross, above what THEY allocate to spend on the Hurricane, will go back into the general fund of the Red Cross. They've done this for years, got caught at it during 9/11, and still carry on the practice. On the other hand, money to the Salvation Army will continue to go to relief efforts as long as they are needed without diversion.So while both organizations do excellent work, the Red Cross suffers a bit from an unfortunate case of sticky fingers where the loot is concerned. That may lead you to modify your suggestions, or it may not. But I'm always in favor of a fully informed decision.
[Ed. note: During the hurricanes of 2004, several of the crew in Florida, and other places, reported how they received more assistance from the Salvation Army than from the Red Cross.]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Further from Sir John Killigrew, Sept. 1, 2005:] About writing "Hurrican Katrina" on the check: It may help. Sadly, it took quite a bit of heat on the good old ARC to get them to agree to send most of the designated funds to NYC after 9/11. But they didn't change the policy. So even if you remind people to write "Hurricane Katrina" on the check, if ARC gets $50 billion, and they, in their wisdom, decide to only allocate $30 billion for relief, the other $20 billion goes back in the salamagundi pot. Either way, reminding people would be a good idea, and the Red Cross will make use of the money for other disasters and other places perhaps not so trendy or well-publicized. But it's still a tiny bit dishonest not to tell folks up front that money you send to help folks for this disaster might not go to them. Which was why I was making sure you knew. After all, I never signed articles with the Red Cross. As a volunteer for 13 years, I was just considered supercargo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[From Capt. Robert Culliford, Sept. 5, 2005:] I am so sorry watching all of this about Katrina. Not being a citizen or taxpayer i do not have the right to comment. I have been watching a news report about an elderly couple who have had their house destroyed, and have only got 11cents in the world. If I was an American taxpayer, I would be hammering on the politicians doors, demanding that some of those able bodied little -unts who are out looting are made an offer. 1 years sweat equity cleaning up, for which you will be paid or 10 years hard labour. Your call! vast ye swabs,
Good luck
Capt Robert Culliford
[From Beluche, Sept. 13, 2005:]
Ahoy Lass,
Tis good ol' Beluche firing one over yer bow. Well Christine, things are starting to look up a wee bit. My Lady and I went back in to Metairie twice last week, to check on things and to bring back valuables and clothing. Can't go about nekkid ya know!
Still waiting for that $2000 share-out that King George Jr. is promising. Gonna need it when we can at last return to the home port.
Yeah, the city is starting to dry out now. Of course, our little ville was mostly high and dry. This puzzles me, as Metairie has been known to take water during a slight drizzle! Our little apartment complex sustained ONE broken window. Everywhere else there are massive oak trees, some several hundred years old, toppled over like dominoes. Other trees snapped like twigs, and of course, a plethora of roof shingles, siding and business signs all over the place.
We shall overcome! You just can't keep the people of south Louisiana down. Yes, come next spring, we shall be back to eating those things that would make an exterminator run screaming for the hills! We shall once again dance in the streets with a beer in one hand and an umbrella in the other! Yea, even Mardi Gras will once again roll through, littering our streets with trash and evil smells! Yes, again the trees lining our streets and boulevards will be decorated with stranded Mardi Gras beads of all colors (ya know, them damned things don't even break free in a cat4 hurricane). Ya know, New Orleans seems surrealistcally nice when devoid of noisy motorists and gun toting gang bangers. Seeing all of this on the news is one thing, but to have it in your face...
Thanks to all of the people out there who have donated some of their swag, and opened their homes to our lot. God bless you all. Later,
Beluche
Jim and Jan McArthur, mentioned in the last NQG email newsletter, are now out of New Orleans, and are staying with fellow pirates in Alabama.
PIRATES HELPING PIRATES
**************************
In the last email, we offered to help match up those pirates needing help, with those who could offer to help. We had several of the NQG crew make offers of places to stay and other help, but so far, we've had not pirates reporting they need help. If there are any Gulf area pirates out there who still need help, please contact us.
And we can try to match them up with others who've made offers of help. Meanwhile, we encourage you all to donate to the storm victims in general. To this end, read the message below, from John Guss, a Civil War re-enactor:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends & Fellow Historians,

I reflect back to a year ago when I took a business trip to New Orleans. While I was in that magnificent historic city I had the privilege of visiting many of the wonderful museums, historic sites, enjoyed the delicious cuisine, and interacted with a fascinating culture of people.

After seeing the devastation throughout the city on television I think of places like the antique shops, the French Quarter/Bourbon Street where perhaps some of you may have enjoyed a cocktail or two on a visit. There is also the Children's Museum, Confederate Memorial Hall which houses many one of a kind pieces of our nation's southern heritage, the D-Day Museum, which I believe is the very best museum representing WWII, and of course the War of 1812 battlefield of Chalmette, where General Andrew Jackson, against overwhelming odds defeated an elite British force. There is a National Cemetery next to the battlefield where hundreds of Civil War and other war veterans rest. All of this is within yards of the river which continues to pour over the levies as I write.

There are also restaurants like the Court of Two Sisters, the Gumbo Shop, and Cafe Du Monde with its great coffee and famous beignets. The list of historic sites, buildings, cemeteries, etc. can go on and on. It is so hard to imagine these places are either partially or even in some cases completely submerged in water.

Not only has New Orleans suffered, but other areas as well. I received word that the beautiful historic plantation of Beauvoir near Biloxi, the home of President Jefferson Davis, was completely destroyed.

However, above all of the historic treasures damaged and lost, it is the people of those areas who are in the most need. They are perhaps our friends, our family, but they are our fellow Americans. It will take our prayers and support to help them gain their strength and perserverence so they may restore their lives and their homes. After such time, hopefully they can restore our national historic treasures.

I am challenging each of you at this time to give what you can to the cause.

CANDLES FOR STORM VICTIMS
*****************************
[From Diane, Sept. 1, 2005:] While I can't help by offering my home, I am trying to get candle orders to send. I am an Independent PartyLite Consultant and have sent this email to all my customers with hopes they will open their hearts and wallets to help. Perhaps you might send it to the Pirating community to see if they would like to order through me as well. Candles range from $6.95-34.95 plus shipping and tax. If anyone would be interested I can give you details on how them to pay me.
After watching the news again today and seeing the devastation in Louisiana, I decided I needed to do something to help the people that Hurricane Katrina has hurt. I thought about food and candles I have at home I can donate. But then I decided to ask everyone if they would like to help as well. So from now until Monday Sep 12 I will be taking orders from anyone who wants to help as well and wasn't sure just how to. These poor people are without electricity so I figured that candlelight would be a way to help combat that. What you buy is only determined by your generosity. I will be using all the hostess credit for this to get candles to send, and giving part of my paycheck to the Red Cross for relief that way. So please help me help those whose lives are not going to be the same for quite some time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[After several questions on my part, Diane replied:] I have been selling PL for a little over a year. The company itself has been around since 1973. We have the highest quality candles on the market. They are made from food-grade paraffin and do not blacken walls (or other things such as lungs) because of the high quality of ingredients used. They are in fact the only ones used in the white house because of these reasons. I have heard people say they could go to WalMart and buy tea lights for $2.00/ dozen but then once they used our candles realized that you get what you pay for. Our candles burn about 100 degrees cooler so they are safer for youngsters and if they attempt to eat them, they may only get a bad taste in their mouth from the scent the candle is since they are made with food grade paraffin. They also liquefy as they burn so they totally consume themselves and if tipped over, after 30 degrees will extinguish themselves. They all have different burning times but the one I have timed (because I was able) was our tea lights. They are designed to burn 4-5 hours and every time I have timed them, it has been 4 1/2-5. You can check out the web site at www.partylite.com  for more information.
As for me, no I do not belong to any Pirate community unfortunately. Being where we are in Ohio there doesn't seem to be any (or perhaps I just haven't found them yet). I can give you my PL id number and you can call them to check for my legitimacy from them. PL does not offer discounts to guests because of their great hostess program. Although last year the company itself did give away tons of candles to the FL hurricane victims and I'm sure will do so again this year (if they haven't already). I just thought this would be a way to get even more down to those in need.
[For those interested in buying candles, you can contact Diane at: Cathera "AT" aol.com  ]
IZABEL UPDATE
***************
Izabel is the lass who was arrested by the airport constables for accidentally bringing a prop weapon in her luggage. Several of you offered to help her, and several of you have been inquiring as to the outcome of her problem. Izabel was released from gaol in time for her and Cascabel to travel out to the Cutthroats of Corona pirate festival. She was cheered up by the many supporters she met in person, and who were happy to see she made it to the pirate festival. Now, she and Cascabel have another favor to ask. She would appreciate if those who know her would write a reference letter for her to use in court when she returns for her hearing. If you are willing to write one, please refer to her by her real name: Andrea Widman. Probably a real, mailed letter would be best, so the postmarks can attest to the many locations they come from, to show she is well known. Her address is: Andrea Widman, 110 Laurel Ct., Peachtree City, GA 30269. Any help in this would be appreciated.
THE BUCCANEERS DVD
**********************
Having seen this series on a scratchy copy of a copy of a videotape, I'm happy to learn the complete 1956/57 TV series "The Buccaneers", starring Robert Shaw, is now available on DVD. Set in New Providence, in the 1720s, this series follows the adventures of Dan Tempest, captain of the Sultana.. Governor Woodes Rogers, Blackbeard, and other actual pirates are woven into a story line which doesn't deviate too far from history. The 8 disc set containing all 39 episodes is available at: http://www.hollywoodsattic.com/shopping/Pricelist.asp?special=yes&prid=3490
FUNDRAISING FOR
LISA MILES LIFT:
******************
[From Claire Warren:]
Lisa Miles is a pirate wench on wheels, and the lovely wife of Ace Miles. Tales of the Seven Seas will be assisting the Miles family to purchase a lift that will make life easier for them by assisting Lisa with getting in and out of her chair. These don't come cheap and the approximate cost of Lisa's Lift is $6,000. We will hold our first fundraiser at Ojai, where we will either sell or auction off donated pirate items. We had originally wanted to hold a raffle, but there is an ordinance at Lake Casita against raffles and games of chance. So we'll either sell the items out-right at the camp or hold an auction, timed so as not to interfere with the pirate auctions next door at St. Gregs. Pirate items can be anything - from small or silly to extraodinary and elaborate. It's all good. If you can donate pirate items of any type, please bring them to Ojai or mail them to me and I'll get them there for you. Pirate items can be mailed to my work address:
Claire Warren
c/o Silicon Valley College
6201 San Ignacio Ave
San Jose, CA 95006
Thanks in advance mates!! The more items we can put up, the better!! So far Dread Pyrate Gregoray has donated some awesome pirate knives, Iron Jack and Jill are donating Buccaneers Ball swag and I'm hunting for a good Johnny Depp autographed photo. Anything you can come up with would be much appreciated!!
Don Hatcher (aka Stitch) opened his new pirate store, SeaWolf Trading Company, in Fremont on Sept 10. The address is: 36551 Fremont Blvd. Fremont CA 94536. We've heard from a few who've visited the store that Stitch has assembled a goodly collection of piratical swag.
PIRATES HELPING PIRATES UPDATE - Aug. 30, 2005
***********************
Lads and lasses,
As we watch and listen to the news, we are very sobered by the conditions left behind by Hurricane Katrina. Our hearts go out to those who have had to live through all this.
We heard today from Capt. N. Cobbs, who escaped ahead of the storm. Here's his message below:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My dear friends and mateys,

This is from yer mate Capt. N. Cobbs, ESQ., an' 'is lovely lass,

Well, 'ere we be in 'ol Lafayette, La. A good mate an' 'is wife 'ave lowered the gang plank fer meself an' the missus fer the duration. We hail from the port o' New Orleans, which fer all intents an' purposes looks as if the 'and o' some evil deity 'as slapped 'is 'and down upon. Aye lads and lasses, 'ol New Orleans shall not ever be the same agin. To all of ye what never been 'ere afore, YER LOSS! T' all of us who 'ave lived 'ere 'an in the surrounding areas, OUR LOSS! AHRRRRR.......
We all be fer a'sheddin many a tear. One o' me fine mateys 'as 12 foot o' water, two fathoms worth, a'coverin 'is home at this moment. Tis tragic fer sure. Me an' me mate's 'eart goes out even t' all the lubbers what resided 'ere. Jamaica, lass, I contacted Capt. William t'day. 'E an 'is wife Jan are a'doin fine. They rode out the storm like a true pair 'o sea fairin' folk. They be alive an' well. They be fer 'avin t' boil water fer cookin' but since they do 'ave nat'rul gas fer the cookin' they be well, with much canned goods in their 'old. They's dogs an' cat crew be doin well too.

As fer meself and the lovely Ms. Nancy, we may be a'makin our port o' call 'ere in ol' Lafayette fer some time.
I know that what I ask of ye may be 'ard fer mos' of ye swag 'oardin types out there, but if'n the opporunity presents itself t' make a donation t' the red cross or whatever, t 'elp folk down 'ere, Don't be fer hesitatin'. Aye! Someday we will all step into the noose someday, in some form or another, an the BIG MAN may look more kindly upon our scabrous souls come the judgement day.
Jamaica, lass, please be a'sendin this out with the next update.

T' all who read an' heed, full flagons t' ye all, an smooth sailin t' ye' all!

Capt. N. Cobbs an crew.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I (Jamaica Rose) also called Capt. Williams (Jim McArthur) today, and was very surprised to get through, and that their phone actually worked. As Capt. Cobbs said, Capt. Williams and his wife are fine - they live in the 20 % of New Orleans that is not flooded (yet). They had relative little damage to their home, and they are all unhurt and safe. They have gas, water (boiling the water though), phone service, but no electricity.
For the Salvation Army:
1-800-SAL-ARMY
While watching the news today, I realized a lot of people are going to be homeless for quite some time. Katrina is way worse than any hurricane that hit last year. This is our tsunami. Unlike Florida last year, there is no way hurricane victims can camp out next to their homes while they are repaired. There's no dry land. And with the flood waters not retreating any time soon, it's going to get real unhealthy real fast.
First I thought with our own youngun's up and out we have two spare bedrooms -- and would be glad to take in a hurricane refugee family for a long while. I know it's quite a ways here to Calif. - but maybe someone would be glad to get away from the hurricane ravaged area for a while until the floods recede, or maybe to start over out here.
And then I thought others of our NQG crew would like to help out some hapless fellow brethren of the sea ... especially those who live closer, so it would be easier for water-logged refugees to get to them.
What's the use of having a pirate network, if we can't put it to good use when there is a great need? So, I'll be glad to act as the pirate refugee clearinghouse. While many hurricane victims are still stuck without power, phone service, and a way out of their flood ravaged towns, we know many have already evacuated to other areas, and so they may be checking email via libraries, Internet cafes, etc. Phone service is still working in areas, as the above message attests. So perhaps we can get the word out to some.
If you are in need of refuge (or know of another pirate who is), tell us a bit about yourself (and yer family if there are others with you). Let us know what pirate crew, if any, you belong to, or tell us the names of other pirates, if any, who can vouch for you. It's hard to expect people to take in complete strangers, so the more background you can give, the better. Give us contact info (phone number, email, etc) and we'll try to match up scuttled pirates with those who've got room in their vessels.
Those who are willing to take in a pirate or two, send word to us, giving us your particulars. Will you take in a single female, single male, married couple, family with kids, etc? Give us your contact information, your location, and a little about the situation you offer. We can pass on to you the particulars of those refugees who contact us and meet your criteria.
Pass the word amongst those pirates you have contact with. If any have no where to go, maybe we can find them a temporary refuge with other pirates. Pirates need to help other pirates.
KATRINA'S COMING - Aug. 28, 2005
***********************
Heads up me hearties,
Just a quick message before we head off to Corona again. We woke up this morning after a full day at the Cutthroats of Corona, and turned on the news, to learn of how strong Katrina has become. They are saying it's as strong as Camille, only bigger! I immediately thought of all our friends in New Orleans, and the surrounding areas. We'll be praying for you all today and tomorrow. Though many of you have probably already left for higher ground. After it's all over (and once you can get to a keyboard with power), please let us know how you fared. If any one needs help, please let No Quarter Given know and we can spread the word to the NQG readers.
PIRATE EMERGENCY - THE REST OF THE STORY - Aug. 26, 2005
***********************
You all are splendid lads and lasses,
We sent out a call for help a few days ago, for the lass Isabel, who had unwittingly transported a knife (a dull one mind you) in her carry on bag. So many of you responded. It's very heartening to know pirates will come out to help their own.
For all of you who expressed concern, you'll be happy to know that Isabel (Andé) is now out on bail (after almost two days in jail), and here in California, to attend the Cutthroats of Corona. Below is a message from Cascabel, telling you more about it:
Ahoy, Christine......
Just a note to you that you can pass on to all that offered help and support in our recent troubles with the authorities.
We truly appreciate all the support and concern of all that responded to your emergency notice. The words of encouragement and the enormous response was truly comforting.
So far, I have gotten Izabel out of jail, and gotten the next hearing moved to another county where things may be more reasonable. This is simply an honest mistake by honest people with no criminal intent, and was blown way out of proportion by the authorities. I believe that the case will be dismissed once all the facts are known.
The knife had slipped behind the lining of the luggage where it could not be seen during one of our road trips, and showed up on x-ray. She was totally unaware that it was there. We had already declared our other weapons including firearms and had them secured as required in our checked baggage. It should have been obvious to the authorities that if we had known about the knife, it would also have been secured.
This has been truly a nightmare, and I am learning things about how "The System" works that I never really wanted to know, and also much about how essentially innocent people can be mis-treated by the authorities.
Anyhow, thanks again to all who responded to the situation with e-mails and phone calls. There were even offers of financial help and character witnesses if needed !!!!! I have tried to respond personally to all that took the time to e-mail me, and I apologize to any that I missed.
We'll keep you posted as to what happens next when Isabel has her hearing.
Meanwhile -- we hope to see many of you at the Cutthroats of Corona. For more details and a map, visit: www.oldworldfestivals.com
While I know it will be hot tomorrow, the faire site does have many mature trees and lots of shade. Today while setting up, a good stiff breeze kicked up shortly after noon, and kept up all afternoon. And the faire is open late tomorrow -- 11 am till 9 pm, so we'll be able to party hearty into the night hours after it cools off. If you are coming, ya might want to bring plenty of drinking water (there is no potable water at the faire, and the vendors will sell you small bottles of water for a pricey penny).
Pirate booty in Buena Park
By LAURA CZINGULA
The Orange County Register
Avast, me hearties!
Pirates are headed this way - parrots, peg legs, eye patches and all.
They're part of the interactive pirate- themed dinner show that's under construction at the former location of Wild Bill's dinner theater in Buena Park. It's currently a work site, but it's scheduled to be swarming with pirates starting in December.
In contrast to the audio-animatronic characters in Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride, the Pirate's Dinner Adventure will feature 150 live actors stunt performers and singers who will enact the story of Princess Anita and her kidnapper, the evil Captain Sebastian the Black.
Audience members will be seated in one of six "ships," dining on a three-course meal while they cheer on a pirate who tries to rescue the princess.
Masterminds and artistic directors of Pirate's Dinner Adventure are two Spanish natives, brothers Ramon and Antonio Riba, who have run a similar pirate attraction since 1996 in Orlando, Fla. The success of that show led them to believe it was time to expand westward. They earned permits for the project in May 2004 and the building permit in April.
To improve the odds of success, they're not only preparing a show full of swinging acrobatic pirates, staged sword-fights and special effects, they're also building the replica of an 18th-century Spanish galleon and floating it in a 250,000-gallon indoor lagoon.
Shiver me timbers!
EMERGENCY - PIRATES NEED LEGAL AID - Aug. 24, 2005
***********************
Heads up me hearties,
This morning, our good shipmate Cascabel (Arthur Whitttam) and his lady Isabel (Andé) were travelling out to the West Coast to participate in the Cutthroats of Corona Festival this weekend. At the airport (Hartfield, Atlanta, GA) as the authorities searched through their seabags, they found a knife in Isabel's carry-on luggage. It turns out Isabel had unwittingly left one of her pirate weapons in the carry-on bag. Unknownst to her, a knife had slid down under the lining of her soft luggage and she hadn't seen it. But the X-ray machine did find it. She was then hauled off under arrest. She has been in lock up all day, and will remain in gaol for the night (this good lady has never even had so much as a parking ticket). Needless to say, she is terrified. She is to be arrainged on the morrow (Thursday) - time unknown as of yet.
If there is any fellow Brethren of the Sea out there with some legal expertise that can give Cascabel some advice on how to aid his lady, please email Cascabel at: snkmn "AT" bellsouth.net
MONSTER HOUSE NEEDS PIRATES FOR THE SHOW - Aug. 15, 2005
***********************
Greetings lads and lasses,
Originally, the Monster House show picked Holly Naranjo's (Capt. Rum Annie Flint) of the Pirates n' Plunder store. We were thrilled for her. But the honorable City of Whittier decided they would not approve the building permits. Holly is really upset. For they had to use someone else's house instead.
The new house is in Reseda. Sorry about this going out to everyone on my list - I don't have an easy way of selecting geographical regions from the email addresses I have.
The Monster House people contacted me to see if we could get some pirates to come out this next week, to harrass the builders working on the house.
Plan A is to film pirates on Wed. (Aug. 17) at 2:30 pm.
Plan B is to film pirates on Tues (Aug. 16) at 2:30 pm.
They said they will call me on Monday to let me know which day for sure, but they are going to try to make it Wed.
They want LOTS of pirates in garb. Bring weapons -- with which to threaten the builders.
They also want PARROTS. When I mentioned RATS, he was a bit hesitant - and wanted to know if they could be controlled. I just laughed -- and told him they were TAME RATS. He said, sure -- rats could come too, if they want.
Anyone interested, contact me (email reply), and I can let you know what the exact plans are as they develop, as well as give you directions, etc. I won't be able to reply to anyone until Monday evening.
I know this is short notice, in the middle of the week, but I hope lots of you can make it. There is no pay for this - the show has no budget this year, but you will get fame and glory being on the show, plus get to see the Pirate House in progress. I've been told the main plans -- and they sound sooooo cool, I really wished they had picked my house -- as you will probably wish they had picked yours. But I've been sworn to secrecy -- so you'll just have to go yourselves to see, if you want to know what's in store.
Also, on Sunday August 21, will be the big HOUSE REVEAL, when the home owners get to see the "new" house. They would love to have a crowd of pirates then too. That should take place around 4-6 pm Sunday afternoon. They are supposed to pin that down more firmly later in the week, and I can pass the word. So anyone interested in coming on Sunday, let me know too.
MONSTER HOUSE ONLY IN GREATER LOS ANGELES - July 18, 2005
***********************
Greetings again, me buckos,
Roger Baer of Monster House wrote back to me today (very succinctly) - and said:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We need home in the greater Los Angeles area only. Thanks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know this will be very disappointing to those of you not in the greater Los Angeles area, but I wanted to get this message out right away, to save you the time of preparing the application needlessly, and also to help keep the Monster House people from needlessly sifting through tons of applications they can't use. (I have visions of some of you trying to decide what is meant by "Greater Los Angeles area" -- I'm pretty sure that Phoenix and Las Vegas are not within the definition).
And to those of you who are in the Los Angeles area, ... best of luck. I know we will all want to watch the final show when it comes out.
The new flyer reads:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ahoy all ye pirates!
The Discovery Channel reality series "Monster House" is currently planning a "Pirate" themed house for an upcoming episode of our show. We are scouring the seven seas in search of a homeowner willing to let their house be plundered by our captain Steve Watson and his crew of monster builders. Any pirates in the greater Los Angeles area, who think they be worthy of such bounty should go to the Monster House website, download an application, and fax it to (818) 847-1096. Clearly mark that you are applying for the Pirate House episode, and make haste you sea dogs, as time be running short....
http://www.monsterhouse.tv/homeown.htm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I noticed the submission rules have changed a little since I applied yesterday. If you haven't applied yet -- you might want to re-read the instructions for submission (be sure to "refresh" or "reload" the page if you looked at it yesterday to make sure you get the latest version). Again -- good luck to all ye greater LA pirates.
Blackheartedly yrs,
--Jamaica Rose
(If you wish to be removed from this list, email back with UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject field, . . . if you dare, that is. For shortly after you should do so, an old blind pirate will knock on your door, and hand you a scrap of yellowed paper with a black spot upon it. After that, we're not sure what happens . . . )
"Damnation to the Governor and Confusion to the Colony!"
LONG OVERDUE PIRATE UPDATE - July 9, 2005
LONG OVERDUE PIRATE UPDATE
--Hurricane Season
--POTC Fan Trip Cruise
--MacLeod's Claim to Fame
--SoCal Events this next week
--CutThroats of Corona
--Irving Johnson
--POTC I, II & III News
and much more
Heave to, lads and lasses,
It's been a while since we launched one of our No Quarter Given cyber missives. I've been so swamped with getting the NQG magazine out, filling orders for swag, going to nautical events and pirate festivals, voyagin' to New Providence (see below for more), and actin' in an advisory capacity for a new pirate festival here in Southern California (see below about "Cutthroats of Corona Pirate Festival") I'm having a hard time keeping up.
Many of you have been writin', asking if I've been captured by the Spanish, wonderin' why there have been no more NQG missives. It's just I've been overwhelmed. Pirate business is GOOD. There are a few things goin' on now that you'll want to know about, so I'll try to squeeze out a quick message now.
But first let me say to any of our crew in and around London, that we have been very concerned for you. We condemn the acts of those cruel and cowardly cockroaches who have attacked your trains and buses. We hope that all of you, and your loved ones, are safe.
HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE
****************************
To our crew and friends in the Caribbean, Florida Keys, and the Gulf Coast: here you go again. Hurricane season has hit early, and hard. We hope your hatches are all battened securely as Dennis approaches. Many of you are still recovering from last season's hurricanes. Our hearts and prayers are with you.
For storm tracking, there are many sites you can go to. Here's a few that I find useful:
Carribean Hurricane Network -- posts from those who can get emails out from the various islands, or from people elsewhere who have talked to friends and family via phone (special pages for each affected island group, and also message boards for those looking for word of friends and family, and pleas for help): http://www.stormcarib.com/
POTC FAN TRIPS CRUISE
***********************
A few of us pirates recently hijacked the Windjammer schooner Legacy, and took a trip to that famous pirate haven New Providence (Nassau), and Jamaica. I was along for the Miami to New Providence portion of the trip, and had my first brush with a hurricane (well -- we were on the fringes of Tropical Storm Arlene, so not a hurricane actually, but it was close enough for me). Oryginal Cinn kept a good record and has posted it for all to enjoy. Learn all about the voyage, and see images at: http://www.pirates.admiralsarms.com/jamaica.html
