“Real
Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship”
Chicago, ILLINOIS.
Field Museum
This
world premier exhibit organized by National Geographic tells the compelling
story of the Whydah, a real pirate ship that began as a slave ship, and
the stories of the diverse people whose lives converged on the vessel.
Sunk in a fierce storm off the coast of Cape Cod in April 1717, the Whydah was
located by underwater explorer Barry Clifford in 1984, becoming the first fully
authenticated pirate ship to be discovered in American waters. The exhibition,
with more than 200 treasures recovered from the wreck, will provide visitors
with an unprecedented glimpse into unique economic, political and social
circumstances of the early 18th-century Caribbean and the inextricable link
between the slave trade and piracy. Over 150 artifacts from the first
authenticated pirate shipwreck found in American waters! , See real pirate
weaponry such as cannons and grenades , Touch actual pirate treasure! , Board a
re-creation of the Whydah to see pirate living quarters and experience life on
board!

Days
Liverpool, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA
Privateer Days, held the first weekend of July, is an annual celebration of the
privateering era of the late 18th century in Queen’s County, centering on the
Town of Liverpool. The event highlights the history and culture of the area
through music, theatre, guided tours and historical re-enactments. The goal of
Privateer Days is to celebrate our maritime history, acknowledge Liverpool’s
cultural and commercial history, and build an enduring sense of community.
Privateer Days brings our history alive, inviting residents and visitors from
near and far to step back in time to 1780 to the height of privateering. Through
battle re-enactments, costumed tours of the town and Old Burial Ground, dory
races and entertainment featuring local performers, participants learn about the

August
7th & 8th, 2009: Pyrate
Invasion
Beaufort, NORTH CAROLINA
Beaufort, NC invites your entire crew to invade our Town on the weekend
of August 7th and 8th, 2009. Don't worry, there will be many more
"Brethren of the Sea" in attendance. There will be sword fighting,
cannon fire, pillaging, plundering, and of course the ever popular swilling of
grog. Make plans to join us for a fun-filled family weekend that you're
sure to never forget.
On June 14 of 1747 several Spanish privateers (privately
owned warships with a government sponsored license to attack enemy shipping)
from St. Augustine entered Beaufort harbor and made off with several small
ships. At the time a militia of only 13 men were posted in the town to protect
the area. The Spanish easily escaped.
Only two months later on August 26 the Spanish privateers
reappeared. Their intention this time was to take the town. Major Enoch Ward and
fifty-eight militiamen responded but were driven from the town. The citizens
fled leaving behind everything for the privateers to pillage.
Three days later Colonel Thomas Lovick and Major Ward had
collected more men and counterattacked, driving the Spanish out. It is said that
without the help of close to 100 farmers and locals, the militia may not have
prevailed.
Local folklore suggests that several Spaniards died and were
buried in the Old Burying Grounds, also known as Queen Anne's Cemetery.
August 7th
thru 16th, 2009: Bill
Johnston’s Pirates Days
Alexandria Bay, NEW YORK
Welcome to Alexandria Bay, in the beautiful Thousand
Islands, New York. Alexandria Bay is home of Boldt Castle, situated on Heart
Island, and the proud home of the Famous “Bill Johnston’s Pirate Days.”
The following is a list of our 10 days filled with family fun and special
events. The sword-fighting group, known as the “Tales from Remikreh,” will
be performing throughout the Village streets and at various Route 12 locations.
Life size chessboard.
Bill Johnston was a renegade
after the patriots war, who blew up the British steamer, Sir Robert Peel, hid
among the 1000 Islands, and was hunted by both U.S. and Canadian authorities.
The annual Bill Johnston's Pirates Days celebration commemorates some of his
exploits. Fill your senses with the sound and spectacle when pirate ships attack
the village from the St. Lawrence River, as the brave villagers try to stave
them off. The air is filled with smoke and the sound of musket fire and cannon,
and eventually the villagers succumb as the pirates invade the town. After the
mayor turns over the key to the village to the invading marauders, everyone
becomes a pirate.
You are invited to join in the spirit of Pirate Days and
dress as a Pirate, Patriot, or Indian when attending any or all of these events.
All times are subject to change. Please check the Event Board at the
Entertainment Tent or at the Chamber Office at (315) 482-9531. A band of Sword
Fighting Pirates will be available during all 10 days at most events listed for
photo opportunities. The Tales from Remikreh group will be throughout the
Village so BEWARE! Most events are free and for the enjoyment of the public.
Call the Chamber office for details at 800-541-2110.

- Info on purchasing
tickets here. Tickets include food, entertainment and punch. Adult
beverages will be available at a cash bar. Featuring the "Rusty
Cutlass" band. So, dress in your pirate best and join in the jollification.
Re-enactors: Join the Crew of the
Black Heart as we will fight with swords, shoot guns, recreate battles and are
immersed in pirate history. But, as with all good things there is a
catch...authentic pirates have to dress completely authentically, from the
buckles on your shoes to your hat. Contact the press gang through: philthy@maidenspub.com
Polyester Pirates: If you want to be a
pirate just to have some fun, this would be choice number two. The other larger
group of pirates we have at the Pirate gathering are the "polyester
pirates". These pirates address the legends more than the historical
accuracy of pirates in Hampton Roads. And man can you have fun with this.
Polyester pirates can take many more liberties and be much more comfortable with
their dress and actions. They can work and play in any area of the festival
outside the living history exhibits.

The Cutty Sark, built in 1869 is the last surviving 19th Century Tea Clipper.
In May 2007, whilst undergoing a major renovation, The Cutty Sark caught fire.
Fortunately, most of the timbers had been removed for preservation, but the
damage to her superstructure was extensive. She is due to reopen to the
public in 2010. Cutty

enthusiasts, to have a fun day out, and to help raise funds for a fine old ship.

Awareness Day
Many a sailor or pirate had to struggle with the symptoms of scurvy. Sad
to say, scurvy still exists. The humble goal of LimeStrong is to wipe out

Scurvy. They hope to achieve this by bringing awareness to the fact that Scurvy
still exists in the modern world, even though we have had a documented and cost
effective cure for almost 400 years. Plus, it’s a great excuse to have
some grog (rum punch with lime juice), or margaritas, with yer shipmates in the
name of a good cause. Visit the website for some great ideas to promote
the awareness of this day and the problem of scurvy. And EAT A LIME! (or
