September 11th through 26th (weekends), 2010: (weekends):  The 5th Annual  St. Louis Pirate Festival
Wentzville, MISSOURI
Fort Royal, Martinique 1755
France has a king, England has a king. Why shouldn't pirates have a king? It's the Golden Age of Piracy, and in the village of Fort Royal on the island of Martinique, pirates have gathered to choose a Pirate King. Of course, this is news to the Governor, who is courting the favors of the French King, Louis, in hopes of receiving a title and royal appointment. The three lead contenders for the title of pirate king have decided that the decision should be based on "friendly" competition. Suddenly everyone is caught up in the contests -- even the ladies of the St. Clair Gentlemen's Club and the local religious order! Pirates are pirates, and rules -- well, guidelines, really -- are broken as the day's competition comes to a head. And how will the governor react when he finds out that pirates are trying to elect one of their own to leadership, right under his nose? Come out and join the fun! And every hour, on the hour, raise your mug of grog to the health of the king. Which king? Who cares? It's a festival! Held at Wentzville's Rotary Park, 45 minutes from downtown St. Louis..  St Louis Pirate Festival Office 425 Spencer Road St. Peters, MO 63376 (636) 928-4141.

October 1st through 31st (see website for which nights they are open), 2010:  Pirates of Emerson, a Halloween Adventure
Fremont, CALIFORNIA
We are completely unlike the traditional haunted house; we have taken this to a much, much higher level. At our Dark Adventure, we have created an environment where you are actually in the scenes. We have made extensive use of special effects, robotics, animation and interaction. While we do have the obligatory scream in your face areas - they are relatively small.  Some of the animation may be a bit intense for those of an impressionable age and we do not recommend our attraction for those under 13 years old. We do not use blood and guts for effect, (well not very much), but after experiencing the Adventure you will never miss them. This is an extremely scary event.  45021 WarmSprings Blvd, Fremont, CA.  Tickets can be purchased online at the website.

Ocracoke, NORTH CAROLINA
Time:  2 pm
[until we get updated information for 2010, here are details from the 2009 listing] Pirates Return to Ocracoke 291 Years After the Death of Blackbeard to Remember Their Fallen Brethren.  For only the 2nd time in 291 years, the historically significant “Battle of Ocracoke” and the death of the notorious pirate Blackbeard will be memorialized on Ocracoke Island. The observance will be conducted on a soundside sandy beach adjacent to Ocracoke’s Springer’s Point, near the location of the 1718 engagement at Teaches Hole Channel. Pirate living-history reenactors, dressed in period attire replete with cutlasses, flintlock pistols and cannon, will assemble at the site for a 45-minute ceremony featuring an elegy, period music, a specially-composed pirate chanty, the floating of a wreath and military-like honors for the 23 pirates and King’s sailors who were killed in the battle. The annual event was created in 2008 by members of Blackbeard’s Crew and by Kevin Duffus, a Raleigh, North Carolina, historian and author of the book, The Last Days of Black Beard the Pirate. Among the many new theories presented in his book, Duffus believes that the 23 bodies belonging to Blackbeard and the others killed at Ocracoke in 1718 were buried in a mass grave near where the 2009 memorial event will be held. A solemn one-mile procession to the event site will begin at 1:30 p.m. from Blackbeard’s Lodge in Ocracoke village at 111 Back Rd. Those attending are encouraged to gather at 1 p.m. at Blackbeard’s Lodge. Last minute information and contingency plans, if necessary, will be announced at that time. There is no public parking near the ceremony site but some limited shuttle service may be available. Non-pirates are encouraged to ride bicycles. On November 22, 1718, two hired merchant sloops manned by 60 Royal Navy sailors from Virginia engaged the notorious pirate Edward Thatch, aka Blackbeard and his 20 shipmates near Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina. Following a brief gun battle and hand-to-hand combat lasting fewer than six minutes, 12 pirates were killed including Blackbeard, and nine men were captured. Eleven of the King’s men were killed.

May 2nd, 2011:  International Scurvy Awareness Day
Many a sailor or pirate had to struggle with the symptoms of scurvy.  Sad to say, scurvy still exists.  The humble goal of LimeStrong is to wipe out what may possibly be the most easily preventable disease in human history, Scurvy. They hope to achieve this by bringing awareness to the fact that Scurvy still exists in the modern world, even though we have had a documented and cost effective cure for almost 400 years.  Plus, it’s a great excuse to have some grog (rum punch with lime juice), or margaritas, with yer shipmates in the name of a good cause.  Visit the website for some great ideas to promote the awareness of this day and the problem of scurvy.  AND EAT A LIME! (or lots of other fruits).

Bill Johnston was a renegade after the patriots war, who blew up the British steamer, Sir Robert Peel, hid among the 1000 Islands, and was hunted by both U.S. and Canadian authorities. The annual Bill Johnston's Pirates Days celebration commemorates some of his exploits. Fill your senses with the sound and spectacle when pirate ships attack the village from the St. Lawrence River, as the brave villagers try to stave them off.
