May 2nd,
2012: International Scurvy
Awareness Day
Many a sailor or pirate had to struggle with the symptoms of scurvy. Sad
to say, scurvy still exists. The humble goal of LimeStrong is to wipe out
what may possibly be the most easily preventable disease in human history,
Scurvy. They hope to achieve this by bringing awareness to the fact that Scurvy
still exists in the modern world, even though we have had a documented and cost
effective cure for almost 400 years. Plus, it’s a great excuse to have
some grog (rum punch with lime juice), or margaritas, with yer shipmates in the
name of a good cause. Visit the website for some great ideas to promote
the awareness of this day and the problem of scurvy. AND EAT A LIME! (or
lots of other fruits).

Blackbeard Festival
Hampton, VIRGINIA
[until we get updated information for 2012, here are details from the 2011 listing]
Once a year visitors from all over the country enjoy the sights and sounds of
18th century Hampton overrun by pirates. Hampton’s waterfront comes alive with
dozens of pirate re-enactors, costumed in historically accurate garb, who
transform today’s Hampton into the busy seaport of yesterday. Led by
Blackbeard the Pirate himself, re-enactors help visitors step back in time and
re-live the history and legends of 1718 Hampton. The Festival offers a variety
of children’s activities, live musical entertainment, fireworks, period
vendors, arts and crafts, and much more! This year’s activities include a
number of reenactments from impromptu street skirmishes between pirates and the
militia, to full-scale sea battles in the Hampton Harbor, featuring the popular
re-enactment of Blackbeard’s final battle. Onlookers can also enjoy the
waterfront view where tall ships, including Kalmar Nyckel, tower over more than
50 private sail and powerboats all decked out in their own pirate gear. A
presentation ceremony follows the sea battle, where Lt. Maynard presents
Blackbeard's head and defeated crew to Virginia's Governor Spotswood. Visitors
can participate in the festivities when they join Blackbeard’s funeral parade,
Hampton’s version of Mardi Gras, and share in the booty from his treasure
chest.

At dawn on June 8th, the English crossed Matanzas Bay, captured the fort, routed the Spanish defenders, and burned the town."

August, 2012: Brigand's Cove
Charlestown, INDIANA
[until we get updated information for 2012, here are details from the 2011
listing]
Pirates of Paynetown has been canceled. This was a decision of the Paynetown
SRA's DNR property manager. Anyway, we are planning to move the event to a new
location and rebrand it. It will now be known as "Brigand's Grove" and
will be a haven for not just pirates, but also highwaymen and other nefarious
sorts. The new location will have a LOT more room and a LOT more freedom.
Furthermore, there will no longer be a registration fee! We will also be able to
use the expanding new historic site, Tunnel Mill. The only downside is that
we're losing the lake. We do have a nice creek, but it's only suitable for
smaller, short-draft vessels such as pirogues. The new location is in
Charlestown, Indiana, about 30 minutes from Louisville, KY. We have a
great site and a great new idea, plus people who truly appreciate us and want us
there! It's a win-win all the way around. Please register so we know what
to expect. Registration form attached. Feel free to share it with anyone who is
interested. (PLEASE REGISTER! It makes my job easier!) NOTE: If you've already
pre-registered for Pirates of Paynetown, you do NOT need to re-register for
Brigand's Grove. We'll take care of it! We're also waiving the vendor fee for
any vendors THIS YEAR ONLY!

Johnston’s Pirates Days

[until we get updated information for 2012, here are details from the 2011

Welcome to Alexandria Bay, in the beautiful Thousand Islands, New York.
Alexandria Bay is home of Boldt Castle, situated on Heart Island, and the proud
home of the Famous “Bill Johnston’s Pirate Days”. Pirate Invasion, on both
Saturdays, Aug. 7 and 14th, at 2 pm. The following is a list of our 10 days
filled with family fun and special events. Our sword-fighting group, known as
“Tales from Remikreh”, will be performing throughout Alexandria Bay. Bill Johnston was a renegade
after the patriots war, who blew up the British steamer, Sir Robert Peel, hid
among the 1000 Islands, and was hunted by both U.S. and Canadian authorities.
The annual Bill Johnston's Pirates Days celebration commemorates some of his
exploits. Fill your senses with the sound and spectacle when pirate ships attack
the village from the St. Lawrence River, as the brave villagers try to stave
them off. The air is filled with smoke and the sound of musket fire and cannon,
and eventually the villagers succumb as the pirates invade the town. After the
mayor turns over the key to the village to the invading marauders, everyone
becomes a pirate.
Most events are free and for the enjoyment of the public.

Fort Royal, Martinique 1720 and the Pirates are at it again. This time, Captain
“Red-legs” Greaves has a plan in mind. Instead of attacking Martinique
outright, he has struck a deal with the Governor, effectively bribing his way
onto the island, and into the Governor’s pockets! Gold and silver have bought
the Pirates the run of the island, and not even the French Military seems to be
able to stop them. There are Pirates on the docks, Pirates in the streets,
Pirates in the taverns, and Pirates in the cupboards! Yet all is not lost, not
if the ladies of Martinique have anything to say about it. If the corrupt
Governor and his Pirate accomplices are not careful, they might find themselves
over-run and runover by the True Pirates of Martinique! Hip! Hip! Huzzah!

scream in your face areas - they are relatively small. Some of the
animation may be a bit intense for those of an impressionable age and we do not
recommend our attraction for those under 13 years old. This is an extremely scary event.
