Finney, Fred, Mystery History of a Pirate Galleon, [Copper Beech, 1996]. It doesn't matter that pirates never sailed in galleons, kids will still love this wonderful book. It’s full of puzzles, mazes, hidden pictures, guessing games, brainteasers, historical questions and more fun than you can shake a cutlass at! Where else can you find answers to the questions you always wanted to ask, such as: “What did they do up in the rigging?” and “Could a pirate get infected with barnacles?”

Keenan, Dave, Captain Paul Watson:  The Good Pirate, [online only, 2003].  Paul Watson uses pirate strategies and techniques for good purposes, saving whales and other endangered sea life.

Platt, Richard, Pirate, [Eyewitness Books: Alfred A. Knopf, 1994] ISBN: 0-679-87255-8. A close-up look at the colorful and cruel robbers of the sea. Learn who devised the terrifying Jolly Roger, how a surprisingly disciplined life was maintained aboard pirate ships, and what cunning ruses pirates used to lure merchants to their doom. Filled with extraordinary illustrations. Many photos of surviving artifacts.**

Ross, Stewart, Fact or Fiction: Pirates, [Copper Beech, 1995]. This children's book separates fact from fiction by examining a combination of real and imaginary pirates through the ages and across the globe, from Blackbeard and Captain Kidd to Captain Hook and Long John Silver.

Spence, David, Pirates! (Ladybird Explorer Plus series), [Ladybird, 1996]. This is an interactive book containing enough windows, wheels, flaps, tabs and acetates to keep any young pirate occupied for hours. Here is the opinion of one of our NQG readers: "A neat little book with pop ups and overlay sheets, oddly enough in the childrens book there's a woodcut of L'Ollonais forcing a man to eat a heart, and there's a neat pop up flap showing a lashing being given - You pull the tab, and the lash & arm move back and forth on the back. Cute!"**

Thompson, Julie & Brownie Mackintosh, A Pirates Life for Me, [Charles Bridge Publishing Watertown MA]. Gorgeously illustrated and reasonably true to the historical life-style of pirates. Also available is an accompanying cassette tape that includes a narration of the book on one side (so the child may follow along), and songs on side 2 performed by the authors, with Tommy Makem. [Reviewed by Ken Kinkor & Loretta Beltran]
