reference with many illustrations, covering the same period of history as the Golden Age
of Piracy.**

of these early Colonial ships, often favored by pirates & privateers.

Coxere, Edward. Adventures by Sea of Edward Coxere. [OUP, 1946]. Foreword by H. M. Tomlinson, edited by E. H. W. Meyerstein. You will be enchanted, like many, many others, by this plain-spoken Stuart-time seaman. Good example of day-to-day living on a ship in the 17th century.
Culver, Henry B., The Book of Old Ships:
From Egyptian Galleys to Clipper Ships, [New York, 1924 (reprinted by
Dover, 1992)]. Well illustrated, detailed information on 62 types of ships. Interesting
appendix illustrates many stern designs, typical stern lanterns, cannon information,
etc.**
Falconer, William, Falconer's Marine Dictionary, [1780
(reprinted by Augustus M. Kelley, NY, 1970)]. A wonderful period resource, chock full of
labeled illustrations.**
Fisher, Dennis, Latitude Hooks and Asimuth Rings: How to Build and Use 18
Traditional Navigational Tools, [International Marine/Ragged Mtn. Press,
1995] Softcover. Wonderful book explaining a wide range of navigational tools, from very
primitive, to the fairly sophisticated astrolabe. Instructions given for construction
(many from wood, cardboard or heavy paper).**
Gilkerson, William, Boarders Away, Vol. I: With Steel, [Andrew
Mowbray Pub., 1994]. All encompassing study of edged weapons used aboard fighting sail
between the years 1626-1826: axes, pikes & blades.
Gilkerson, William, Boarders Away, Vol. II: Firearms of the Age of Fighting
Sail, [Andrew Mowbray Pub., 1995]. Covers pistols, muskets,
combustibles, and small cannon used aboard ship in the years 1626-1826.
Gruppe, Henry, The Frigates (TIME LIFE's The Seafarer's
Series), [Time-Life Books, 1979]. Mostly 18th & 19th C., covers the early American
Navy, detailed illustration of "The Constitution", discussion of the Barbary
Corsairs, & the engagement in Tripoli.**
Howarth, David, The Men-of-War, (TIME LIFE's The
Seafarer's Series), [Time-Life Books, 1978]. The evolution of cannon & sail working
together, from Henry VIII era through end of Restoration. Interesting section on preparing
a fireship.**
Kemp, Peter (ed.), The Oxford Companion to Ships & the Sea
[Oxford University Press, 1976] Big, thick book on everything nautical. It is
wonderful to browse through.**
Manucy, Albert, Artillery through the Ages: a Short Illustrated History of
Cannon, Emphasizing Types Used in America, [Division of Publications,
National Park Service, US Dept. of the Interior, Washington, DC, 1949 (reprint 1985)].
Cost: $3.25. A wonderful booklet, inexpensive, and filled with information, illustrations
& charts.**
Rediker, Marcus, Between the Devil &
the Deep Blue Sea: Merchant Seamen, Pirates, & the Anglo-American Maritime World,
1700-1750 [Cambridge University Press, 1987] Very in-depth &
scholarly approach. Lot of basic info on sailors of the time, as well as a
chapter on "The Seaman
as Pirate".**
Smith, Hervey Garrett, The Arts of the Sailor, [New York,
1953, (reprinted by Dover, 1990)]. Covers knotting, splicing and ropework, 101 detailed
illustrations.**
Whipple, A. B. C., Fighting Sail, (TIME LIFE's The
Seafarer's Series), [Time-Life Books, 1978]. Nelson, Napoleon & the battle at
Trafalgar. Chart of ratings of British naval ships. Detailed illustration of Nelson's
flagship, H.M.S. "Victory". Late 18th C. & early 19th C.**
