Table of Contents
The books listed here, if not currently in print, are, for the most part, not too impossible to find. Try your local library, college and university libraries, used book stores, book searches, or the sources listed below.

Good Sources for Buying Books on Piracy,
Privateering, & Nautical History
****(Also check our NQG "Merchants and Smugglers"
page for many vendors of used books -- to find those out-of-print books)****
Fern Canyon Press: The Pirates Library - many of the books listed
below can be found for sale here - probably your best bet for just about any
pirate book that's still in print (for adults and children), and even a few out of print
volumes as well.
Buccaneer Trading Company:
Books on Piracy - carries many old, rare books, as well as more current books.
Not cheap though.
Sea Tales - Book
Sales - Pirate Books in print from Amazon.com, for adults and children
Tall Ships Books - used
books, mostly fiction.
Teach's Hole - good selection of
pirate books in print for adults and children
Dogwood Press - main focus
are books on the history of Southwest Louisiana and East Texas, but they
do carry several books on Jean and Pierre Laffite, and piracy along the Gulf
of Mexico.
AbeBooks.com - For finding used books in general, I have a lot of success with this extensive website.
Alibris - While not as quite as extensive as AbeBooks, I have found some good deals on used books from this site.
PIRATICAL AND PRIVATEERING BOOKS IN ENGLISH - Very comprehensive piratical bibliography from Larry Voyer, complete with many illustrations of the books listed. Includes many rare, old books.
ISLE OF TORTUGA BIBLIOGRAPHY - Very complete piratical bibliography, with sources in many languages besides English, and includes documents more than books (newspapers, journal articles, dissertations, books, reports on contemporary piracy incidents and conference papers) from M. Bruyneel. Many references on modern piracy.
These two books listed are easy to obtain, are very inexpensive, and are good reading for the beginning pirate or privateer re-enactor. For the novice, they give a good quick overview of piracy, and they are still enjoyable for the long-time buccaneer. They are recommended for the younguns as well.
Copeland, Peter F., Pirates & Buccaneers Coloring Book, [Dover Publications, 1977] This is an adult-type coloring book with informative paragraphs on each page. It covers pirates from ancient times up through 1832. The real worth of this book is for the costuming ideas. The illustrations are done in a very realistic style, with an eye to detail. Each of the black and white coloring pages is also reproduced smaller, in color, on the front and back covers. At only $2.95, this is a MUST-HAVE book for any pirate or privateer.**
Knill, Harry (ed.), Pirates, illustrated by Gregory Irons, [Bellerophon Books, 1975]. Well-illustrated, though on the cartoony side, there is also a wealth of written information, about one page per famous pirate. Again, so inexpensive ($4.50), but so informative in a very accessible manner, there should be no excuse for not obtaining this book.**
