A&E Horatio Hornblower

Sea Battle in San Diego, CA

Saturday, April 3, 1999

(all photos by Christine Markel Lampe)

Crowds lined the decks of the ferry boat Berkeley to observe the excitement of a cannon battle in San Diego Harbor between the Pilgrim of Newport, the British vessel, and the Bill of Rights, the French vessel. To the left of the Berkeley, is the HM Bark Endevour, visiting in San Diego as part of the Western N. American leg of her world voyage.

But, before the battle, pirates will be pirates. Set loose upon the docks at the San Diego Maritime Museum, a few dozen Port Royal Privateers, along with Wall and Mad Dog of the Black Gryphons, accosted passers-by, handed out A&E gold coins, CD roms, flyers and A&E bandanas. Meanwhile, the "Jackstraws" and "Marooned" sang shanties and pirate songs.

Then, using our wits and winning charm, we took over the HM Bark Endeavour. Here are several of the PRP at the table in the great cabin just aft of the officer's quarters. At least here was head room even for me (top left), whereas in the officer's quarters only Louie (seated, center) and Cap'n Ned (standing in the very center) could move about freely without bumping their heads.

(seated, l-r: Francisco de la Beltraneja, Louie Sanschagrin, center - Ned Slaye, top row - Jamaice Rose, Evaine Mansveldt, Philistina d'Morte, Blind Jeff).

John Forester, son of C. S. Forester, author of the Horatio Hornblower series, finds himself in questionable company.
