Sea Battle in New York City

Saturday, April 3, 1999

(Photos submitted by Bob & Allyson Chandler, commentary assistance from Neal Kirk, & Steve Hartwick)

Several scurvy pirates gather at dawn, on the South Street Seaport docks in New York.

Scarlet (Allyson Chandler), Kat (Kathleen Fortner), Splinter (James Wallbeoff III) ships carpenter, Black Dick (Richard Intravia), master gunner, deserter from the British Navy (H.M.S. Rose), Margaret Koelliker, ships seamstress (of Centerstage Costumes).

Ah -- the British sailors (portrayed by Canadian regiments) are there too.

Capt. Jason Everett and seated almost hidden is Lt Fred Fishell. Then a Glengarry (in green) and a 92 Highlander. Units present were 1st Regiment of Foot "The Royal Scots", The Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada, The Glengarry Fensible Light Infantry, and a 92nd Highlander.

You can see the bowsprit of the Providence in the background.

Here are some of the regimental troops forming up for inspection, prior to the opening ceremonies..

Sal Tarantino, (far left background) Comdr. of Sheldons Horse, the 2ndCont. Light Dragoons, from Ct. These boys were the first commissioned Calvary and were Washington's private body guard during the Revolution. They were also known as the Pirates of Long Island Sound for their amphibious operations against British and Loyalists of Long Island.

Silverbeard (center, Bob Chandler) giving some last min. words of wisdom (run yonder me lads) to the Ships Company gun crew, aboard the Sloop Providence. The Providence came down from the colony of Rhoads Island under the command of Captain Austin Becker. During the battle, she was under the "command" of William Kidd.

The "H.M.S." Rose, 6th rate British Frigate, hails from Bridgeport, CT. and commanded by Captain Richard Bailey. She is loading the Canadian Militia (mostly Royal Scots). They lined the rails, and fought from the "fighting tops" during the engagement. These guys were GOOD. The Rose was "commanded" by Christopher Cole in Boston, and a one Fletcher Moon in New York. Be dammed, if this Mr. Moon did not bear a striking resemblance to one of the members of the Pyrates Royal!!!

Captain William Kidd (Neal J. Kirk) along with second in command Capt. Angus MacPherson (Christopher Cole) aboard the Providence, watching the Rose slip her cables and contemplating the impending contest of arms. Chris "commanded" the Rose in Boston.

The merry crew of the Free Men of the Sea, entertaining the crowd with some gambling and song. Left to right, Scarlet, Margaret Koelliker, Angus MacPherson (Chris Cole), Keelhaul Kate (Donna Kirk), Splinter (James Wallbeoff ), and Jack (Zack Applebee) company drummer and powder monkey.
