A&E Horatio Hornblower

Sea Battle in Long Beach, CA

Sunday, March 28, 1999

Left: Pirate coordinator Erik Berliner (dressed for his role as Capt. Jack Cagway) addresses the assembled pirates, giving out the plans for the day. To his right is Kris Slava, executive producer for the A&E "Horatio Hornblower" movies.

Right: With much restraint, we pirates were polite this time, and did not mug the event organizers for their HH jackets. Instead, we listened to more instructions on how to pass out A&E bandanas (what the guy in the jacket is holding out), CD roms, chocolate A&E coins, and Hornblower flyers (seen on the main A&E battle page). We had pirates from the Port Royal Privateers, the Acting Action stage combat studios, and Brethren of the Coast. Behind the pirates are the masts of the Bill of Rights and the Swift of Ipswitch. And beyond that, is the "Grassy Knoll", otherwise known as Lighthouse Point, from where the public watched the battles

We also had Walter Nelson singing shanties (seen here at right - the common seaman). The officer is John Bertram (see at left and right) - portraying an officer of the Corps of Engineers.

Members of the Port Royal Privateers back up Walter on a rousing rendition of "South Australia".

Right: Some of the feisty wenches from the Brethren of the Coast.

Prior to the sea battle, the crowd was treated to a mock fight and sword battle by members of the Acting Action studio. The argument had something to do with whether the pirates would go into battle against the British, or sail to Hawaii.

French Louie (left) and Franscisco de la Beltraneja (of NQG fame) go at it (Francisco looks as if he is winning)

Another pair of fighters (our daugther Evaine is the blonde one) grapple at their sword hilts, and curse one another.

Finally, head mutineer, Bob Chapin (facing camera) and pirate captain Tony De Longis (back to camera) duel one-on-one, while the other pirates watch. See more photos of the mock sword battle and "emergency" wedding.

After the sword battle concluded, pirates and saliors took to the ships, the ships headed out to the harbor, while the crowds paraded over to Lighthouse Point to observe the combatants.

Left: One of the Brethren women (Lani Tucker) waves good-bye to the ships.

The Bill of Rights proudly flies the A&E banners, as she goes into battle with the Swift of Ipswich (to the right), with the Queen Mary in the background.
